Can we output exhibits to endnotes yet?

Recommended Posts

Does TMG v9 support the output of exhibits to endnotes in Journal reports? This used to be supported until v8.04, I believe, when the release notes said:

"IN DEVELOPMENT: Reports / Options / Exhibit tab - The output selections to footnotes and endnotes are disabled until a number of issues are resolved."

This feature worked fine in v6 and v7, and I won't be upgrading until it is restored.

Since I am just a user like yourself, I cannot speak for Wholly Genes plans, but I observe that those options are still unavailable in Version 9.01.

I know it doesn't help, since we have been without this feature for over two years, but as I understand it this was caused by the need to do a complete re-write of the report generator for Version 8 so it could work on 64-bit machines. I guess this feature is harder to code than was expected . But I don't think it hurts to "rattle the cage". At least there is some indication that WhollyGenes is working on these outstanding issues, as the only other Version 8 "In Development" report generator issue was resolved just last year when WordPerfect output finally became available again.

Michael:

Now that you've mentioned WordPerfect, perhaps you could venture an explanation what the difficulty was that held up its implementation.

If I understand TMG's handling of WordPerfect, all that was necessary was the preparation of a WordPerfect compatible file containing the generated output report. TMG is not issuing any 64 bit print commands itself. This seems pretty vanilla to me - and almost nothing to do with 64 bit programming. WordPerfect has not changed its formatting requirements for a WordPerfect compatible file since WordPerfect version 6 ! (perhaps ten years ago?) The only conceivable connection with 64 bit programming would be the extraction of the TMG data behind the generated output report. But that had to be done for all other report formats, whose availability significantly preceded the availability of WordPerfect for TMG. Since any TMG report of a given type consists of identical TMG data, one would think that, once one has programmed a report type for Word, PDF, screen, etc. it would be virtually effortless to make the minor modifications for WordPerfect.

Am I missing something here? I know you are "just a user like yourself", but I would appreciate your thoughts on the subject.

WordPerfect took so long because every time that the developer released a 'finished' version, the beta testers broke it. This went on repeatedly for a considerable period of time. The report manager is written by an outside developer and that contributes to the long delays.
