Old TMG (2003) version found on old HDD - how can I read the data?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I been saving old HDD's from my dads old computer, he was into genealogy and I know he came quite far.

In his HDD I found this folder: The Master Genealogist

I am unsure if he truly used this application or not, he got another genealogy application in there as well.

How can I open his tree up and view it? (if he created one in TMG)

I see there is also a BACKUP folder with things in it - but looks more like an install backup.

some files got created in 2000, others been used 2002 and last 2003 (error log among other).

I don't see an install application - I see a: goweb.exe app ... but didn't seem to do anything.

Found an INSTALL log: tmg5setup.exe seems to be the one that he used last to install. (2002)

I would love to get this data that he has created, is there anyone that might know how to do this?

I can't even find a download button on this site to download the last version (full release) to see if an import might work.

Hoping someone might be able to help me out!

Thank you so much!

The download link for the final version of TMG is in a pinned topic at the top of the TMG9 forum. TMG sales and support have ended (although there is a way to buy the last version).

That said, TMG9 can only restore a TMG5 project. It won't open a project from the projects folder.

TMG5 had the projects and backups in the program folder and won't run without some difficulty on a modern system.

Backups should be in the backups folder with the filetype .SQZ.

A project in the projects folder (or a subfolder of the projects folder) consists of a large number of files (.PJC, .DBF, .FPT and others) and a complete set is required to open the project. You can make a ZIP archive of the projects folder to transfer it.

If you find backups or projects in folders, you can send them to me and I'll make GEDCOM files for you so that you can import them into other current genealogy programs.

Thank you Jim!

Unfortunately there is no data in the projects folder (no sub folders either, just empty) and no .sqz in the BACKUP folder (only dlls and ocx files)

So perhaps he never really used it.

The error log has one post: C:\WINDOWS\System32\bbFolderTree.ocx was registred

I downloaded everything that looked important from his HDD to mine- thinking now I might have missed something on his, when I hook it up again I will take a closer look -now when I know what I am looking for!

Thank you for the help Jim - and the quick reply!

It was possible to relocate the user data although most users didn't at that time. Check the Documents folder and any user-created folders.

Hello,

I have similar situation with a TMG file from 2005. TMG 9 says to make a backup copy in TMG5/6 and then import the backup file into the current TMG-9.

I do not have TMG5/6 only 7 & 9. Can I download it somewhere or are there other options?

Thanks for keeping the forum alive.

Bertho

You mean that you have a TMG project in a folder (that consists of many files)? Or a TMG backup file (.SQZ)?

A backup file (.SQZ) can be restored.

If you have a TMG 5/6 project in a folder, you can make a ZIP file of the entire folder and send it to me or place the ZIP file somewhere that I can download it. I'll update the project to TMG9.

Hi Jim,

That is a fantastic help!

It is a folder with all the files. I received the file years ago from a friend in Sweden but there is no SQZ file.

I will zip it up and email it to you.

I am having trouble with the email link, it is trying to open a yahoo of google mail account which I do not have and I am using Outlook.

Thanks again,

Bertho

Bertho,

Since you are having problems, instead of trying to click on the email link, use your mouse to hover over the link and it will display Jim's email address. Now simply type that address in as the address for your Outlook mail message.

Done. TMG v6.12 and TMG v9.05 backups of the Lennart project sent to Bertho.

Terry... Thanks for helping Bertho get in touch.
