TMG 9.05 UK to Parallels 12

Recommended Posts

Currently moving TMG from Windows 10 on a laptop to an iMac ...

Instal of Windows on the iMac from a new MS Windows AUD$180 on a USB stick is a problem but got it sorted with a ISO bootable image.

Installed Parallels ok with some assistance in the chat facility from Parallels Support staff ... this was a good experience.

Installed tmg9uk and TMGUtility OK transferring the database .sqz file from the laptop on a USB and then doing a Restore. However getting the exhibits in the right folder has been a challenge.

Currently wrestling with getting Second Site to work.

Just sharing the process in case others may be interested.

John,

You should not have to wrestle with Second Site to get it working under Parallels. Most of Second Site was developed while I used Windows under Parallels on a MacBook Pro.

What exactly are you wrestling with?

Sorry for delay in responding, been busy.

Apologies John Cardinal ... "wrestling" was an inappropriate word. Just working with the folders between Windows and iMac (e.g. \\MAC\Home\ blah-blah.) needs some understanding of both environments so as to make the best decision on how you want to work and share files and have the data available in the Mac and Windows. Nothing to do with the TMG or SS software really.

SS is working just fine on the iMAC in Windows 10 and Parallels 12 ... and I recommend that environment to anyone teetering on the edge of giving it a whirl. Just needs some planning, patience, a copy of Windows and plenty of tea.

No problems once I got the TMG project and exhibits (TMG and Non TMG) in the right folders after the Restore.

John,

I didn't have to do any folder fiddling when using Parallels, TMG, and SS. The secret was not to use the Parallels option where the OS X "home" folder is also used as the Windows "My Documents" folder. I forget the exact details, and I no longer have access to Parallels to refresh my memory. By avoding that Parallels option, I avoided using network paths in Windows to get to the My Documents folder, and that avoided a bunch of issues other people ran into.

John,

I recently started running TMG 9 on my iMac with Window10 and Parallels12. I'm having a problem sorting out the exhibit files. All my photos are on my Mac and I can't seem to get to them, and my external exhibits are on the Windows side. I'm unable to access my photos for new exhibits. I am backing up all my data and exhibits to the windows side. Any suggestions how I can make things easier to work with? I am using the documents folder on the the Windows side.

Don,

My advice is to focus on a single exhibit that is not working the way you expect. Focusing on a single image allows you to inspect the details and make changes without spending a lot of time. Keep track of what you did so that when you discover the problem/solution, you'll know what has to be done for the other exhibits.

Make sure that the path stored in the TMG exhibit record is correct. That assumes that you can access the external exhibit image file from Windows. If the path is not correct, but the image file is visible in a Windows folder, then re-load the image file. If the image file is not visible in a Windows folder, then you have to correct that issue: you could copy exhibit files to the Windows side, or perhaps add a network share so that Windows can access Mac files.
