Logging Exhibits

TMG 9.05

I just recently finished a very successful field trip gathering info on one of my lines. My question is basically can/how do I do what I want?

I took pictures of the existing houses where my ancestors lived. My ancestors moved several times, but always to the same two streets, and the houses were shared and usually within a block of each other. EX: One time they lived on ann street, then moved to St. Mary's street a block away, then back to Ann Street, sometimes to a house next to the original, etc.

Can I attach the pics to one of the existing residence tags so that when that address is referenced for each individual living there, that pic will be attached? Or must I attach the pics to each resident tag for that address one at a time? What is the down side of attaching the pic to a resident tag instead of the individuals? Is there a better way?

I may have other questions once I open TMG up to see what tags are available for Last Wills and Testaments, but any advice in advance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

PS. All exhibits are and will be external.

Bob,

TMG 9.05

Can I attach the pics to one of the existing residence tags so that when that address is referenced for each individual living there, that pic will be attached?

Yes, you can attach the image as an exhibit to the Tag for that address, and it can then be displayed for everyone attached to that Tag either as a Principal or as a Witness.

Or must I attach the pics to each resident tag for that address one at a time?

How is that different than the above?

What is the down side of attaching the pic to a resident tag instead of the individuals?

It can't appear in the picture window on the TMG main screen. I can't think of why you would want it to.

Is there a better way?

Probably not. Attaching the images to Residence Tags will place them in the output according to the Sort Date of that Tag, and automatically connects them to each person entered in the Tag. That's clearly better to me than attaching them to a person, which you would have to do for each person, and they would all appear together in the output.

You could attach them to custom "Photo" Tags which would allow you to locate them in the output independently of the Residence Tag. Have you considered how you want to output these images? I think there is great risk that you will end up with lots of images with seemingly random text interspersed. What form of output do you intend to use?

I may have other questions once I open TMG up to see what tags are available for Last Wills and Testaments, but any advice in advance would be appreciated.

Ask away. How you might enter will and probate information depends on how many you have and how much information you have on each. I've found considerable interesting information for some individuals, and now have separate Tag Types for Will Wrote, Codicil, Proved, Inventory, and Settlement. I've forgotten how many of these are standard, but most aren't. But you don't need all of them. You can use Note or Anecdote Tags instead.

Thanks Terry

I've not really thought about how to output my data yet. I can't think that far ahead so I'm sure a lot of what I am doing or want to do is not conducive to printed reports. I'm trying to cope (re)learning TMG. I probably would use Second Site to a DVD but I have to learn how to use that program as well. I do want to be able to show my lines separately, via a link. I remember seeing examples that do this but have not come anywhere near on figuring our how to do that.

Hi Bob,

Terry has given you good advice on your current question. However, there is yet another option you may wish to consider, especially if your preferred output is intended to be Second Site. This could be in addition to, or instead of, linking your exhibits to the Residence tags.

You don't mention what data entry convention you have chosen for entering addresses of specific buildings in TMG, especially with respect to your Residence Tags. Two methods are common, each with their advantages and disadvantages:

  • Only entering the city/town etc. as the "Place" to link that tag to that more inclusive Master Place List entry, with the building address simply entered in the memo.
  • Entering the complete building address in the Addressee and/or Detail fields of the tag to link to that separate Master Place List entry for each building.

If you choose the latter, then there will be a separate Master Place List entry for each building. In that case you could take advantage of the TMG ability to link an exhibit directly to a Master Place List entry. When you create a Second Site set of web pages for your project, you can optionally choose to have Second Site automatically create an Index of all the places which have a separate Master Place List entry, and to embed their exhibits as part of their Index entry. Now each Second Site Place Index entry which has an exhibit will have a special icon next to that entry. Clicking on the icon will display the exhibit.

In addition to reviewing Terry's excellent web pages about exhibits, you may wish to review the sections concerning exhibits in my on-line book about TMG, starting with:

http://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCGUIDE.HTML#Exhibits

Since my book describes "my" way to enter data into TMG and customize TMG, as well as explaining some of the more "gory" details about TMG, you may find it can give you ideas about other issues you encounter, such as your will tags. For example, I use a custom "Transcript" tag to enter the full transcription details of such things as wills:

Hope this gives you ideas,

I do want to be able to show my lines separately, via a link. I remember seeing examples that do this but have not come anywhere near on figuring our how to do that.

If I understand this separate issue, this is usually accomplished using one or more Flags which identify whether a person is a member of a particular line. I highly recommend starting with Terry's discussion about Flags:

http://tmg.reigelridge.com/basics-flags.htm

As he states in that topic:

When you want to change values of a Flag for many people at once you can use the List of People report to change the value of a Flag for all people that meet the criteria you specify. This procedure makes it relatively easy to create useful Flags and set them for large numbers of people in a short time. There is some information for doing this in my article on Filters. Examples of this application are described in my articles on Creating a Related-by Flag and Creating a Connected Flag.

As Terry mentioned, feel free to ask questions. However, if the question is unrelated to the previous post, it will help to post it as a new Topic.

Hope this gives you ideas,

Bob,

I'm not a fan of adding any exhibit until you know why you are doing it. Making something an exhibit just to keep track of it is doing so the hard way in my view. If you are adding it with the intention that it be output somehow, you need to think about how you expect to output so you can format and attach the exhibit to produce the best results. As you suggest, lots of images in printed output is unlikely to produce a desirable result.

Images can work well in a website. If you want them embedded in the text you would want to consider the number and size of the images. But they can also appear as links, which means the number of them is unimportant and you can make them as large as you like. However using files that are larger than they can be displayed on screen comfortable is not the best idea.

My article on the Basics of Using Exhibits may be helpful.

A new feature in Second Site - adding links to a mapping service is very handy for places that still exist, especially if Google Streetview has visited that site. That provides a link to the map location and the reader then then see a photo of the site in Streetview.

Michael: thanks for the info. I normally do post separate topics per question, but in this instance I was responding to Terry's question as to what my output was going to be. I just happen to mention issues with second site that I was going to need addressed while actually not posting the question.

Terry: the more I think about it, the more likely that my output will be on DVD using second site. Up till now, I've been entering and documenting data while consciously not working on sentences. Sadly, I am the only member of my family interested enough ancestral history, output is not as important as finding and documenting what information I can in the hopes that someone would then pick up the task. In short, my genealogical quest is for personal knowledge and satisfaction.
