Handling photo of houses as exhibits

Recommended Posts

I have pictures of several houses that my families of my ancestors have lived in almost a revolving door situation. I would like to associate the house with the occupants in the correct time period.

What is the best way to associate the house with each family, short of adding the house multiples times, once for each record?

Jim replied:

Use a Residence tag. Link the occupants and the image to the tag.

Thanks JIm. I tried that first and it wouldn't let me BUT after your reply I tried again and it worked.

BTW: I got your email notice but for some reason your reply did not show up in the forum.

That's the only alternative that I see. This means that the image needs to be added to each of the Residence tags for the different family generations.

You could add the image to the place (and thus only need to link it once) but that is not practical because of the limited output possibilities.

Hi Bob,

There is another alternative which several users have adopted for exactly your kind of situation. You can create several "pseudo" people, one for each house. Then each family could have a Residence tag whose Date covered the range of time where that family lived in a given house. Users of this concept then add a custom Witness role to the Residence tag which allows the house "pseudo" person also to be linked to this tag with its own sentence. Pictures of the house can then be added as exhibits to the house "person", as well as other custom tags providing additional information about the house.

This approach provides two features. First there is now the house "person" who would have its own separate custom narrative. At minimum this narrative would include all the Residence tags in chronological order of all the families who lived in that house, plus any other information you choose to add. Next, if you use Second Site you can customize the Residence sentence templates for the "real" occupants to include the house "person" in their sentence so that there is a direct hyperlink to the house person's narrative from each occupant's narrative.

Further discussion of this idea can be found in the Style chapter of my on-line book. It has an extensive section explaining the general concept of creating "pseudo" people, which includes example custom tags to define a beginning and ending of the "life" of such a person, a custom Flag to distinguish between real and "pseudo" people, as well as other custom tags for descriptive information about such people. In addition there is a specific detailed description and examples for creating Location "pseudo" people such as houses or cemeteries.

Takes a little bit of work to initially set all this up in TMG, but it can be quite useful.

Hope this gives you ideas,

Bob,

Another approach is to create a custom "photo" Tag which is then independent of any other Tag. I use them for all my exhibits because it gives my better control over where they appear in narratives created with Second Site. An image doesn't necessarily fit best attached to a Tag that is near the end of the narrative.

Intriguing. How do you distinguish one exhibit from another? EX: For my census tag, I created a tag for each census (1900CEN, 1910CEN, etc) and I attach a copy of the appropriate census register page as an exhibit. Is this how you do it?

Bob,

I put a description of the exhibit in the Memo of the tag so it is easy to see in the Details view. But I seldom have more than two exhibits for any one person. I only make exhibits of photos or drawings related to the person, not images of sources.

How to you use the source images? In reports, in Second Site, from the Details View, or ??

Here is where I cause a lot users to shake their heads.

I am the only member of my family interested in genealogy. Therefore, i am using TMG to document my ancestors, with no plans to publish or share. All sources I cite, wherever possible, I include as an exhibit. That way, if for some reason my citations are lacking, there is a exhibit as reference.

I doubt I will ever get to the point where my data is sufficiently complete to even want to publish, whatever form that may take. However, if I do, then I will undertake whatever work needs to be done to accomplish that. I have second site and have played with it.

At this point, I doing this for self gratification and education about my ancestors and not for posterity. Hopefully, one of my children will express an interest to an extent that causes me to change and do things 'the best' way, but it is unlikely.
