Scary error message when generating a

Recommended Posts

TMG tells one that it cannot find VCF (with both hands) and that TMG must be reinstalled from CD.

The error message occurs the next (and all subsequent) VCF oriented chart report generation attempts after the user changes a file name of any image (in any image window via that image's preferences).

The error used to also occur if the user attempted generating a VCF chart and had exited VCF without saving the previously generated chart. But that seems so be fixed.

Temporary work-around: exit TMG and re-execute TMG. Assuming that you haven't had a heart attack.

Variants of this problem have been known for some while (and reported to the developers) but it has proved very elusive. It seems to be associated with some memory variables getting corrupted (not any stored data on the HDD). I am not aware of it occuring when changing the properties of an image that is to be used in a chart output. (It can also occur if you choose some custom colour in the VCF Report Definition Screen.) The problem is in TMG and not in VCF.

As you have found out, exit TMG and restart it will usually fix the problem. Alternatively, you may need to start off the creation of the chart definition again starting from the default chart of that type.

Please explain a bit more exactly what action you are doing...

Are you changing the image path in the Exhibit Log Properties window or something else?

How do did you do it - by typing or navigating to that file?

Do you have thumbnails disabled or enabled?

Please try the following --- after changing the image information, try running

File > Maintenance > VFI

then

File > Maintenance > Optimise

before you try to create a chart.

Does that stop the error occurring?

Thank you for your reply.

TMG 6.07, thumbnails are enabled as per default.

Procedure to break the link between TMG and VCF:

.Double click on Image Window (of any person) to get to exhibit log of all images for that person.

.Right click on image to be changed (any image) to get menu:

Properties > Load >

.Give new file name, either via select from file list or by typing (either way breaks the VCF link). For example: old filename = Sam.jpg, new filename = Sam1.jpg

To see the broken link error:

Report > Ancestor Box Chart (for example) > Make Chart

Error message window appears:

Visual Chart Form cannot be found. Please reinstall from original disk.

The first time you see the error message, have heart attack!

Experiment:

File > Maintenance > Verify File Integrity

Rerun chart as per above: Error still there

File > Maintenance > Optimize

Rerun chart: Error still there

Do both VMI and Optimize with no intervening action:

Rerun chart as per above: Error still there

Exit TMG

Execute TMG

rerun chart: Error gone.

Hope this helps, if not, at least please revise the (scary “sky is falling”) error message.

Guess what. I have had the same problem since 04 Dec. My VCF on the Descendant Box Chart works normally without Images selected on the options menu. It is when Images are selected that the VCF errors out. Then I retry VCF Descendants Box Chart and it says cannot find VCF. Then the Vcf will not be found even if I remove the Images selection. Opening VCF without the TMG running restores the problem of TMG finding the VCF.

All Images were found during validate and then optimize. Same scenario. Select Images from options menu and VCF errors out. After several tries and error outs the VCF cannot be found. Again launchiong vcf without TMG and closing allows TMG to find the VCF on the descendant box chart. But, if Images are selected the VCF errors and after several tries TMG cannot find VCF.

I can replicate this under v6.12 but cannot replicate it under a v7 build so it doesn't look like it will be an issue with v7.
