Backup problem: error or annoyance?

Recommended Posts

I have switched from backing up to a Zip drive to a flash drive. This has worked well for several months. However, within the past couple of weeks when I do a backup I get this message:

"Input file read failure - This error occurs when a file read operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or restricted by another process."

When I click "OK" I get this message [sample]:

"Backup to e:\JILES GENEALOGY 2006-02-14 15-32-18.sqz is complete."

I can't think of any reconfiguring of software or anything else to account for these messages. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this and whether there is a problem I should be concerned about? Is there a way to confirm the accuracy or completness of a backup? When I look at the file names on the flash drive I see nothing unusual.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

That's usually a generic kind of message.

You can get it if your backup medium is full - or tmg thinks it's full or will be. In that case, checking 'Span disks' in the 'Backup characteristics' step may eliminate the message.

Or (if you were using a CD and depending on your CD software), you may get that message when you are trying to make a tmg backup directly to a CD drive. In that case, make the backup to a folder on your hard drive and then copy that backup file to your CD.

Have you updated the Backup location in Preferences since you switched from zip to flash?

Try checking 'Span Disk' (even though it is not relevant) and see if that stops the message.

The .sqz file is in fact a .zip file, and you can look at it with unzip software (you may have to change the file association to do that, or temporarily change the extension from .sqz to .zip).

Thank you Virginia.

Yes, I have changed the backup location in Preferences. I will try the span disks option. I don't believe I have approached the limit of the flash drive. It has about 8 backups on it but I don't need all of them. I suppose I could delete a few of the earlier ones.

To check available space on your flash drive go to Windows Explorer, right click the flash drive, select properties and you will see how much space is left on the drive...

For some time I have not been able to backup my TMG program to USB drives or Network drives.

Then to make matters worse, I recently had to restore my whole computer from the restore disk. Therefore I have lost a lot of _new_ _data_

and exhibits because I had poor backups.

When I try to backup to anywhere, I get the following error message:

"The Master Genealogist - Input file read failure - This error occurs

when a file read operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or

restricted by another process."

I click OK then see the following: "Errors occurred during backup.

Output file write failure, possible disk full"

And no sqz file is written.

I have not been able to find a ZIP file anywhere in the TMG directory or its subdirectories.

OK. I have no idea why, but I tried to create a new project and got an error that put TMG into Repair Mode. With TMG operating in Repair Mode, I then opened the project that would not back up. It took a long time to load with lots of disk thrashing, but now the backup function seems to work, based on a subset of three attempts. I have no idea at all why, but so far I am happy with the results. Go figger!

Maybe the error message when you created the new project would provide a clue to the backup problem. TMG saves error messages in two places:

Error.txt (in your main TMG folder).

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vfp7rerr.log  (if an older computer might be in C:\Windows\system\)

In both files, each error message is dated and time stamped, with the newest messages at the bottom of the list. If you post the pertinent error message here it might help the developers figure out the original problem.

Good to hear that you're able to back up now!

The problem I reported in 2006, post#5 above is back, and the same exact error messages are reported. I now have the same exact problem with both TMG6 and TMG7 (different projects). I tried changing the backup location to C:\ where there is 3.6GB free space.

When I try to backup to c:\, I get the following error message:

"The Master Genealogist - Input file read failure - This error occurs

when a file read operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or

restricted by another process."

I click OK then see the following: "Errors occurred during backup.

I just tried another v7 backup. Same result. It looked to me like the backup completed, because both progress bars seemed to show 100%, but then the error popped up. Again, no SQZ file was written. Also, nothing was written to either of the suggested log files.

With v7, I created a new project, diddly, and entered myself and my parents.

I tried to back it up; same result. no joy. error.txt was not modified.

Have you tried making the backup to a local drive - the same drive where TMG is installed - and copying the sqz file to your preferred drive?

Virginia

Well, yes, Virginia. I tried to make a backup to C:\, and as I said, no sqz file is created.

I copied all the files from ...my documents\the master genealogist vy\ to an equivalent directory on another computer after installing v7 there and the backup works ok on that computer. Based on that, I suspect that the problem is NOT INCLUDED in the data directories, but in the program directories.

What is backed up from the program directories? and why?

Chuck Mayfield

The backup includes whatever you specify in the Backup Wizard options: projects, layouts, toolbars, timelines, color schemes, buttons, etc. Data Files are not limited to the My Documents folder but by default are stored in 3 locations (see Data File Storage in Help). Briefly:

1. Shared Program Data Files (used by program - buttons, graphics, language, help files, etc.)

Windows Vista:

C:\ProgramData\The Master Genealogist v7

Windows XP and Windows 2000:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\The Master Genealogist v7

2. User Program Data Files (used by program + user - layouts, toolbars, dna, app.ini, etc.)

Windows Vista:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\The Master Genealogist v7

Windows XP and Windows 2000:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\The Master Genealogist v7

3. User Data Files (belonging to user - logs, projects, config files, export, exhibits, etc.)

Windows Vista:

C:\Users\username\Documents\The Master Genealogist v7

Windows XP and Windows 2000:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v7

I have more detailed lists of the data file storage folders/files at http://vblakelock.com/tmg7.pdf

The program files you see in a backup could be either Shared Program or User Program Data Files, for example custom layouts, frames or buttons if you have selected those files to be backed up.

Thanks, Virginia. I will look at your tmg7.pdf file.

I found today that if I uncheck everything but project data files, the backup completes OK. Checking any of the following along with project data files; External exhibits, Accents, Filters; results in failure of the backup. I had shared the TMG7 folder in My Documents on my local LAN, but logged out from them at my other computer. Still the backup does not work.

I suspect a WinXP file lock problem, but can not discover enough info to even tell by looking in directories whether a file is locked or not locked by another process.

back in the win3.1 days, Word would leave a file when it crashed, indicating that the document was open, even when it crashed. I assume that sort of thing would be a used to indicate that there is a lock, but there seems to be no such file here.

Many people prefer to backup their exhibits outside of TMG, and you may wish to consider that. The problem of Restoring exhibits stored in multi-folder trees is addressed in the Caution box at the end of the Help article on Data File Storage.

I'm not sure why accents and filters would pose a problem.

I looked at your file. Thanks for it. However, I see no files that are obviously in ZIP format. The error that TMG reports (but does not put into a LOG file that I can find) mentions a ZIP file:

"The Master Genealogist - Input file read failure - This error occurs

when a file read operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or restricted by another process."

Which TMG7 files are stored in ZIP format?

A .sqz file is another name for a .zip file. You can open a .sqz file with an unzip software. That error message is a generic message covering anything from spanning the old floppy discs to backing up to or restoring from an external medium. Now that floppy discs are so rarely used, that generic message is associated in most cases with backing up to or restoring from a CD or an external hard drive or a flash drive. I'm not sure the text can be taken literally - but perhaps broadly as files which TMG cannot backup (or restore) for some reason - for example writing a backup directly to a CD drive.

But I have been trying to backup to the C: drive. As I said before, if I uncheck everything except Project data files, the backup completes successfully. Is it possible to make that error message give a hint about what the problem is? TMG writes absolutely nothing to either log filename you gave me before. I hate to resort to backing up with 7zip or Acronis because both methods take so long...I see wits' end .....

Chuck: Just a curiousity question regarding Acronis taking so long......you can use it to back up ONLY your project(s) file and exhibits and it certainly doesn't take any time at all. I used it last night to back up my cousin's entire Data partition and Photo partition plus My Docs on C and we were both pleasantly surprised at exactly how quickly it was finished. Even the full system backup was much quicker than we had expected<g>

If the backup works on one computer and not the other, I think you'd want to look for a clue in the differences between the two setups re the backup and restore paths and drive mapping. Is there an overly long path on the problem computer?

Thanks Joan,

I just did a backup of ...\my documents\The Master Genealogist v7 to a network drive. The full backup took 6-7 minutes. Hopefully, future differenial backups will be quicker. I am still worried that I am out of the main stream.

Question: I have not yet converted all my TMG6 projects to TMG7. How can I do that, given that I can not do a full backup with V6?

Question: Acronis is on the same disk drive with TMG7. Given that the most likely failure that would result in loss of data is a disk drive failure, how do you propose that I will be able to restore my data after such a failure? What specific steps should I take to ensure the ability to recover from a catastrophic disk failure.????

Thanks, Virginia. As far as I can tell, both computers have the same file and directory structure for TMGv7 program and data files. I have tried to backup the program on my C: drive to various places without success: A network drive that worked since 2006, E:\;

C:\;

c:\Doc...\The Master Genealogist v7\Backups\

Chuck

PS. It will work to all three locations if I check only Program data files

Actually i have had this problem for almost a year on TMG 6. I have not yet completed my migration to TMG 7 so havent been able to try it. It occurs when i chose to back up external exhibits. I have a multi folder tree of external pictures and it appears to lock on a directory named ROLFS. I deleted the directory to see if it would still happen and it did. I wondered about the space problem and got a 120 gb external USB drive and tried to back it to this and got the same error. There is no zip or compressed file in my picture directory that i can see. I sort of got to the point where i back it up without external exhibits but would prefer to do the whole thing. This problem is not a unique one

John

Btw the full path name is c:\program files\The Master Genealogist\projects\pictures\rolfs

If you check your directions, you'll find that you can back up onto DVDs and put the boot process on the first one, allowing you to boot from the DVD should that be necessary. Let me know if you need further help - we run a Backup SIG at our PC User Group and have chosen Acronis as our program of choice.
