TMG locks on startup

Recommended Posts

After upgrading to V6.10 from V6.08 the program gets stuck on first starting up. This happens whether I use my own project or the sample one. The project loads, then a dialog pops up titled "Progress" with sub entries "Query" and "Retrieving messges". A progress bar gets as far as 20% then freezes. After waiting 3 minutes Task Manager shows that the program is not responding. There are two entries for TMG, one with a flying windows icon and one with the normal TMG icon. Ending either stops the whole task. The same thing happens if I start with a new project.

Any ideas where the problem might be?

Hi,

The program is trying to connect to the internet to retrieve messages from WG, a feature added in a recent update. It hangs because it can't connect.

2 reasons spring to mind

1) you are not connected to the Internet. (Solution Connect)

2) You have a firewall which is stopping TMG from connecting. (Solution, check firewall settings)

Once past the problem you can change the settings in Tools, Preferences, Program Options, Startup and Exit and change the Check for messages.

Once past the problem .... change the Check for messages.

1) I have always-on broadband and everything else gets to the internet.

2) Windows firewall is turned off and I just use SPI on my router for protection. No software

firewall to stop outgoing, as I use Prevex to stop nasties on the way in.

Perhaps it is trying to use Outlook for the emailing which I do not have installed, my mailer is Thunderbird.

In the old days I could fix it by editing the ini file, now it looks like I need a registry hack to get going.

Thanks for the reply, it was helpful. At least I know what the problem is.

You should not need a registry hack if it is a tmg Message Manager problem. Open app.ini in the tmg folder and change the check message options under [startup] to:

CheckMessageDays=0

Thanks Virginia, only I don't hae that entry in my ini file. I tried creating that entry uner the advanced section but

it made no difference. Which section should it be in?

It's in [startup] - the very first section in the app.ini. That section looks like this in my installation:

[startup]

ReloadOnStart=No

ShowHintsform=No

SplashDelay=4

WelcomeBack=2

Welcome=2

CheckUpdateLast=0

CheckMessageLast=2454024

CheckUpdateDays=0

CheckMessageDays=0

It's in [startup]

So it is, as you said at first, I missed that, sorry.

Thanks again, that's fixed it. Big E-hug to you.

I still need to find out why messaging is not working, but isn't urgent now.

Can you run the Message Manager manually from the Help Menu? If that and other web access options - like on the Web menu - don't work, try changing the backslash option in Preferences > Program Options > Other.

No. Same problem, progress bar sticks at 20%

If that and other web access options - like on the Web menu - don't work

The other web options work, as does check for updates.

try changing the backslash option in Preferences > Program Options > Other.

It doesn't change things.

I've sent a query to Wholly Genes linking to this forum thread, so I'll wait for them now.

It is no longer urgent, but thanks for your help Virginia.

Please try

[MessageManager]

ConnectTimeout=50

Yes that has worked. I got the same stuck progress dialog box, but I counted to about 50 seconds and then the progress bar completed and I got in to the message manager. I was able to access the Web site from "Outgoing" and I also sent a test email.

Is the 50 a magic number, or is it seconds, If so can I reduce it to 5 say.

Thanks for your help.

This option is ten by default

You can try any value between zero and 1000.

This is time.

Please try other option too:

[MessageManager]

...

HTTPConnectType=0

...

where

1 - Directly

3 - PROXY

0 - like in Registry (by default)

Please let me know about result.

P.S. I'll be happy to know any details about your network.
