The author devotes just a few pages to the developments prior to 1740, reproducing letters and official documents relating to the exploration of the Virginia backcountry. The bulk of the book is devoted to the years from 1740 to 1783, with substantial sections on the land grants and settlements from 1740 to 1760, on the activities during the French and Indian War, on further developments from 1760 to 1770, and finally on the organization and early years of Botetourt County. As the chronological and topographical treatment proceeds, the author sets forth abstracts of thousands of land grants, organized by time period and by section of the watershed. These basic records are supplemented by militia lists, business records and many other documents. The text is supported by many maps drawn especially for this volume, some showing the distribution of settlements along the various watercourses, and others platting out groups of land grants at some of the early settlements. The Captives of Abb's Valley details the experiences of one family during this period. Written in 1854 by the son of one of the captives, the story of Mary Moore's early life, capture and later return provides the reader with details of early pioneer life as well as its dangers. Both Mary and her brother James and their companion in captivity Martha Evans survived and left numerous descendants who intermarried with the Brown, Crow, Hummer, Morrison and Taylor families, among others..Mary Moore's father, Captain James Moore, a second generation Scotch-Irish Presbyterian who married Mary Poage and whose siblings married into the Coalter, Harrison, McPheeter, Paxton, Steele, Walker and Wallace families came from the New Providence Church area of Augusta County. The story spans the period from their settlement in 1771/2 in Abbs Valley, a long narrow valley, pressing against the ridge of mountains that divides Virginia and West Virginia in present day Tazewell County to the death of Mary Moore in Rockbridge County in 1824. Written in the style of the period with a strong focus on the merits of religious faith, the story also details the everyday life of the participants and provides a picture of what life was like for other families on the frontier. The first is the Telephone directory for Western New Brunswick for July 1947, one of the few available resources for finding people living in the area between one and two generations ago. The other is "An Historical Guide to New Brunswick" and was published as an incentive to tourist travel in 1942. This guide was provided by the New Brunswick Government Bureau of Information and Tourist Travel, in 1942, for the potential tourist so he would know where to go and what to look for when he got there. Liberally illustrated with maps, and photographs of the spots of interest, today it provides us with a, not too strenuous, history of New Brunswick, indexed by the places where the events which shaped the province took place. As you might expect it contains articles about the events in the news both at a national and at a provincial level, including, for instance, the "Investment Supplement." From a purely genealogical perspective perhaps the most interesting portions of each issue are the lists of casualties and commissions. Of course the predominance of the reporting concerns "Officers" but most of the issues also devote space to "NCO's and Men." Each issue also contains a section reporting births, marriages and deaths in Canada, and a "Purely Personal" section which is packed with snippets reporting the events in the lives of Canadians, both enlisted and civilian. NOVA SCOTIA'S PART IN THE GREAT WAR - 1920, BY M. S. While the Compiler and editor's name, Capt. M. S. Hunt appears in the by-line, this book was in fact the joint work of many individuals, their names being credited in the Preface as well as being printed in their individual contributions. Interesting differences between this book of "honour" and other similar works published as records of the same war is that this one not only commemorates the actions and individuals of the military organizations but also those of the auxiliary and civilian efforts. The records of nursing staff, both those who went to Europe and those who served here in Canada, are particularly valuable because of their relative scarcity. While it was recognized by the editor that the aim to report every war effort contribution would never be possible, this book does make a splendid effort. John Hawkes, HISTORY OF SASKATCHEWAN AND ITS PEOPLE - COMPLETE IN 3 VOLUMES, (1924) 2007 $29.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...&p=CA0222-C Written by John Hawkes and first published in 1924, this work of over 2000 pages was originally bound as three volumes, but organized into two subject areas. The whole of vol. 1 and a good part of vol. 2 contains the “story” of Saskatchewan while the remainder of vol. 2 and the whole of vol. 3 is packed with the biographies of about 660 prominent Saskatchewans, and more than 50 photographic portraits. The “story” section is also illustrated with over 235 photographs of subjects such as early dwellings and settlements, people, natural history, and many fascinating early photographs of native people and their ceremonies. Here you can find the whole story of Saskatchewan. The early story of this province is inescapably intertwined with that of the other administration districts initially named the North-West Territories. This vast tract included all the lands between the Ontario border and the Province of British Columbia and up to the pole (except Alaska). Sir Andrew MacPhail, HISTORY OF THE CANADIAN FORCES, 1914-19, MEDICAL SERVICES, (1925) 2007 $23.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=CA0224 By Sir Andrew MacPhail, Kt., O.B.E., M.D., C.M., LL.D., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., F.R.C.S., professor of the History of medicine, McGill University. First published 1925. While standing alone in its own right as a revealing history of this specialized and fascinating aspect of the Great War conflict, this book was also written to become a component of the comprehensive “History of the Canadian Forces in the Great War” being written and produced under the direction and supervision of Col. A. Fortescue Duguid in his position as the Director of the Historical Section, General Staff. The author includes plenty of statistical analysis of the medical consequences of sending over 400,000 Canadians to fight a war in Europe as well as records of the key staff running hospitals and other important medical services. Also not forgotten are the men and women who actually brought medicine to the battlefield. Sir Andrew provides a full listing of all the awards received and of all those who gave their lives in the medical service. Rev. D. J. Rankin, A HISTORY OF THE COUNTY OF ANTIGONISH, NOVA SCOTIA, 1929 $29.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=CA0237 In the spirit of "Truth in Advertising," a better title might have been "A History of the People of Antigonish." Fully two thirds of this very rare book are devoted to biographical descriptions of the early and well know families of this ancient Nova Scotia region. Not to say that the historical content is trivial. The Rev. D. J. Rankin, the author of record, credits J. W. MacDonald, esq., M.D., Mr. William Cameron (teacher,) and Rev. Ronald MacGillivray with providing virtually all of the historical content which would seem to mean that this content is the product of well respected, specialist, scholars and so far more valuable than the results of one man's gleanings. The Rev. Rankin also provides a bibliography of (and numerous credits to) the sources of the copious genealogical information in this book. The biographies are arranged by family groups and indexed by the root family name. Geoffrey Gilbert, THE GILBERT FAMILY HISTORY COLLECTION - COMPLETE IN 8 VOLUMES $29.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...&p=CA0238-S This is a family history "compiled and edited" by Geoffrey Gilbert, and privately published by him in the 1950's. Mr. Gilbert adopted a somewhat unusual format for organizing his history by combining elements of both the "Ancestors" and "Descendants" methodologies and then focusing the histories on his Great Great Grandparents, identifying both their ancestors and their descendants. By selecting this particular generation as his focus he allows himself to concentrate his history on the family's story within North America specifically ignoring the histories of those in Britain where most of the families previously originated from. Each volume also contains an Ancestors chart, some extremely detailed, while some contain sketch maps to help with the family settlement locations. === Did You Know? ================================ DID YOU KNOW that you can quickly access a list of unique surnames in your project using the Project Explorer? Just open the Project Explorer (from the Window menu or toolbar button) and change the "Sort" option to "Surname collapsed list." If you then click on the plus sign to the left of a surname, you'll see a list of people with that surname. (There's also a sort option for "Given name collapsed list.") DID YOU KNOW that you can have the Picklist or Project Exporer group surnames by soundex code so that they ignore minor spelling variations? Just change the Sort option to "Surname soundex." (There's also an option for "Given name soundex"). DID YOU KNOW that there are two versions of the Picklist, the searchable list of all names in your project? While the Simple Picklist is the default, the Expanded Picklist includes more information and options. To use to the more powerful version, access the File menu and choose Preferences > Program Options > Lists > Expanded Picklist. Thereafter, click on the binoculars toolbar button (or press F2) to access the Expanded Picklist. DID YOU KNOW that you can control which fields are displayed on the Picklist? Just click on the "Options..." button at the bottom of that window. DID YOU KNOW that you can easily generate a navigable list of all events that happened at a certain place? Open the Master Place List from the Tools menu and then sort, search, or scroll to find the place of interest. Then highlight that row and click on the button. The Master Event List will open with a list of events that happened at that place. Highlight one of the events and click on the button in order to see or change its details. DID YOU KNOW that you can change the event types and other details that are available on the Add Person screen? Just click on the button in the bottom-left corner of that window. You can control the type and sequence of event types, select the fields to be used for each selected event type, and even add flags to that data entry fields. DID YOU KNOW that you can automatically generate two or more reports in a row? The Book Manager (on the Report menu) can be used for more than generating the various chapters of a book. You can use it to generate any kind of reports in sequence so that you can, for instance, generate updated copies of all of the reports that you want for a typical research trip. Or you can use it to reset the default values of a custom flag using a List of People report and then calculate new values using a filtered List of Events report. Use the Book Manager to itemize the reports that you want and then save that book configuration. Thereafter, you can generate all of those reports with the click of a single button.
