zanemc 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2007 Hi Currently I'm including nicknames in brackets within the given name field . Example : Herbert (Bluey) Joseph Wright I've noticed that there's a field called "Other Name" that the "Getting most out of TMG) suggests be used for nicknames. However if I were to input Herbert Joseph into "Given name" , Wright into "Surname" and Bluey into the "Other Name" fields , then how can the output to reports (inc name indexes ) and screens be changed to read Herbert (Bluey) Joseph Wright ?? Thanks Zane
Terry Reigel 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2007 Not quite, but almost. You can get it to read Herbert Joseph (Bluey) Wright. By default, the Other Name field is not displayed or output. But you can get it to display and/or output by creating a custom Name Style. I'd suggest thinking about that a bit before doing it though. If you go that way, every mention of the name in reports will include the full name including nickname. Depending on the types of reports you favor, that could get very repetitive. In narrative reports you could get around that by creating a second name tag without the nickname and specifying that for some tags. I'd suggest instead you consider entering the nickname in a separate Name-Nick tag. The advantage of that is that it appears separately on the Picklist and in indexes. In narratives, you can then choose to use either the "legal" name or the nickname for individual tags.
nbradley 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2007 (edited) Zane, As with most things in TMG there are lots of different ways to achieve most tasks. It is often a matter of personal preference. If you are happy to see a person's nick name printed in all reports then there is nothing wrong with your current method. I do it too. I have found it useful to put the bracketed nick name at the end of the given names i.e. Herbert Joseph (Bluey) rather than Herbert (Bluey) Joseph. You get a more predictable sort when you look people up or include indexes in reports. Edited May 18, 2007 by nbradley
