=== New: Favorite Filters ==========================

By popular request, we've uploaded a set of more than 50 sample filter definitions that will perform common functions and help you to define filters in TMG v6.12. Among other things, these sample filters will show you how to search for:

o people who have any event in a certain place

o people who have incomplete tasks

o people who have no primary parents (i.e., an end-of-line person)

o end of line ancestors of a specific person

o people who were edited after a specific date

o people whose birth year is within a certain range

o citations for a specific source

o tasks for a specific repository by id number

o list of events in a specific place

o men who might have registered for ww1 draft

...and dozens of others.

As you will see, most of these samples use filter values of "[?]" in order to prompt you to fill in the specific values when the filter is executed. This makes the filters much more flexible.

To use these sample filters, download this file:

http://www.WhollyGenes.com/files/samplefilters.zip

and then unzip it into the folder which contains your project(s). Then run TMG, select a List of People report (for instance) from the Report menu, select "Filtered Group", and select a sample filter from the drop-downlist. Click on to see how the filter is defined.

Many of these sample filters are drawn from a presentation by Janis Parkison Rodriguez to the Arlington Roots Users Group (RUG) on 13 May 2006. Her presentation described her favorite filters plus those of some other TMG users.

In relation to her presentation, Janis wrote two articles for the RUG:

1) "Favorite Filters": A good supplement to the download mentioned above. It details many of those filters and some others.

2) "1880 Census Candidates Using Flags and Book Manager": The filters in this article are not included in the download mentioned above because they make use of a custom flag. You can add that flag as described in the article, however, and learn how to harness the power of the Book Manager too.

The Arlington RUG is perhaps the largest TMG users group in the world and an annual membership (including 12 issues of a great newsletter!) is well worth the price of just $15.00. You can review an index and samples of the RUG newsletter from http://www.rootsusers.org and that will surely convince you to send the modest membership fee to them.

But, while newsletters and presentation handouts are typically only available to members, the RUG has generously made Janis' two filter articles mentioned above available to non-members for a limited time from this link:

=== Updated: QuickSheet: Citing Online Historical Resources - Just $4.50 ===

"Quicksheet: Citing Online Historical Resources" by Elizabeth Shown Mills is a popular four-page laminated reference sheet summarizes the basic principals of citing your online sources of genealogical data and provides example citations for the most common record types. A revised version of the QuickSheet was released recently and is now available from WhollyGenes.com. The price is just $4.50 (+s/h) which, like all of the genealogy books in our store, is 25% less than you'll find it in most other stores.

This 2007 revision of the QuickSheet updates all the URLs and has some other minor revisions that coincide with Ms Mills' new book, "Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace," which is expected to be available by August 1st. (NOTE: when that book is available, you can also expect to find it for 25% OFF the suggested retail price from WhollyGenes.com. Tell your friends!)

=== Out of Stock: Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist ===

The very popular companion book, Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist, is out of stock and is not longer available. The compiler, Lee Hoffman, tells us that he expects to release an updated version of the book at a later date. Watch this space...

=== New U.S. data CDs ============================

The following new searchable data CDs from our partner company, Archive CD Books USA, are now available from www.WhollyGenes.com:

Edmund B. O'Callaghan and Berthold Fernow, transcribers, MUSTER ROLLS OF NEW YORK PROVINCIAL TROOPS. 1755-1764. COLLECTIONS OF THE NEW YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY FOR THE YEAR 1891, (1892) 2007

$19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0296

The transcribers have presented in this volume verbatim transcripts of all surviving New York muster rolls for the Seven Years' War (the last phase of the French and Indian Wars) from 1755 to 1764 (except for the year 1757, for which records are missing), arranging them in convenient tabular form. All muster rolls include the date of the roll, the name of the unit, the names of all the men in the unit and (usually) the rank of every member of the unit. Many of the rolls incorporate additional information, much of it of great genealogical value, including age, birthplace, occupation, date of enlistment and rate of pay. A relatively small number of the rolls also give even more personal data, such as height, complexion and hair color. (more...)

Mary E. Neal Hanaford, compiler, MEREDITH, N.H.: ANNALS AND GENEALOGIES, (1932) 2007

$24.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0214

The compiler has brought together historical sketches relating to the town of Meredith, New Hampshire, and has combined these annals with extensive genealogies of the families of the town, gathered from a large number of local correspondents. The volume concludes with records of Meredith marriages. The area that became the town of Meredith was surveyed in 1748 and was incorporated in 1768. In 1855 a portion of Meredith was set off as Laconia and in 1873 another section of the town was included in Center Harbor. (more...)

Samuel Deane, HISTORY OF SCITUATE, MASSACHUSETTS, FROM ITS FIRST SETTLEMENT TO 1831, (1831) 2007

$12.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0285

Deane compiled one of the earliest comprehensive histories for a New England town, the first half of the volume giving the narrative history of Scituate in a topical format, and the second half presenting biographical sketches of the town ministers and genealogies of nearly three hundred families. The first part of the volume covers the usual topics, such as the native Americans, early settlement, granting of land, military affairs, and the like. In this section are found lists of town officers, freemen and those who served in King Philip's War and the Revolution. Deane provides citations to town or colony records for much of this material. A large and important section, more than thirty pages, is devoted to an early church schism at Scituate. (more...)

William I. Budington, THE HISTORY OF THE FIRST CHURCH, CHARLESTOWN, IN NINE LECTURES, WITH NOTES, (1845) 2007

$14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0286

Budington has surveyed the history of the First Congregational Church at Charlestown, Massachusetts, in the colonial period, augmented by nearly sixty "notes" on various matters of church history, including biographical and genealogical sketches, and concluding with extracts from the church records. (more...)

UNITED METHODIST HISTORICAL SOCIETY CLOSED CHURCH RECORDS SERIES, VOLUME 3, EAST BALTIMORE STATION METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 1907-1958

$19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0453

This third volume of the United Methodist Historical Society Closed Church Records Series contains five church registers from the East Baltimore Station Methodist Episcopal Church (formerly Fells Point), 1907-1958. These records are presented in their original sequence using high-resolution greyscale images. They include handwritten records and therefore do not include any facility for an automated search. Pre-printed section headings and every page containing historical records are included. Unused ledger pages are typically not included and account for any appearance of missing page numbers. (more...)

$18.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...S&p=GB1360S

Three books on one CD. The "Notes & Queries" series of books (there are some for other counties too) are full of interesting local history articles and genealogy interest. You can think of them as being similar to today's family history society or local history society journals. In volume II for example, there is an article on the Inhabitants of "Harrowe super Montem" (Harrow on the Hill) in 1523. A five page list of all the people too, and the taxes that they paid. (more...)

CROCKFORD'S CLERICAL DIRECTORY 1898

$29.49 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=GB1399

Crockford's directories are a superb source of information for those with ancestors in the clergy. The contents are similar to the earlier Clergy Lists but are much more detailed, giving vital personal information about each individual, such as where they studied, when they matriculated and all of their previous posts.

=== New data CDs from Australia ====================

The following releases from our partner company in Australia have recently been added to our store:

AUSTRALIAN BAILLIERES GAZETTEERS SET, 2007.

$83.49 http://www.whollygenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=AU1102

Bailliere's Gazetteers were compiled for most colonies in Australia during the 19th century. This set includes those for New South Wales 1870, Queensland 1876, South Australia 1866, Tasmania 1877, and Victoria 1879 (more...)

NEW SOUTH WALES GOVERNMENT GAZETTE

Government Gazettes contain a vast amount of historical and genealogical information. However they are largely an untapped resource. The few complete runs that are available are usually only found in major libraries. And even for researchers who do have access to these the sheer size and extent of the Gazettes is daunting. Now that is all changing - with the publication of the gazettes on affordable and searchable form on CD-ROM. Tens of thousands of ordinary people and localities, small and large, are mentioned EVERY YEAR in Government Gazettes. But they offer researchers much more than simply names and places. They will help you reconstruct events and circumstances in the life of individuals and communities.

1875: http://www.whollygenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...p;p=AU2100-1875

NEW SOUTH WALES POLICE GAZETTE

Police Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes therefore contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else. They include court lists, lists of warrants issued, appointments and changes in the Police Service, lists of Justices of the Pease, lists of arrests and discharges (which include descriptions), escaped prisoners, and missing persons, as well as lists for liquor, wine sellers, tobacco sellers, auctioneers, billiard and poisons licences. Notices from Police Gazettes from other states are also often included.

The binding and format of the fifth volume is identical to that of the previous four and no explanation is offered for the delay in its release.
