We had a great time, met many interesting folks, and learned a lot too! With some 21 hours of presentations by 9 genealogical speakers, including some of the most reknown professional genealogists from Ireland, England, and the United States, we all learned to be better researchers. An additional 10 hours of TMG-specific presentations (from Bob Velke, John Cardinal, and Lee Hoffman), two cocktail parties, and a movie rounded out the busy 7-day schedule. Aside from all this fun, we successfully skirted Hurricane Noel and had beautiful days of vacation on the tropical islands of St. Thomas and St. Maarten! Transcripts or abstracts are provided for all documents, which have been collected from several colonial probate jurisdictions. Prior to 1641, the four towns of Portsmouth, Dover, Hampton and Exeter, which later formed the Province of New Hampshire, were independent settlements. Between 1641 and 1643, these towns came under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts Bay Colony, where they remained until 1679. In that year the Province of New Hampshire was formed, and all probate records were recorded at the province level until 1771, when the five original counties (Rockingham, Hillsborough, Strafford, Cheshire and Grafton) were erected. Prior to 1771, most of the probate records for New Hampshire were filed at the province level, but many were located elsewhere. From 1643 to 1679, the four New Hampshire towns were part of old Norfolk County, Massachusetts, and those records have been scoured for New Hampshire probate records. Other New Hampshire probate records were located in the files of Essex and Suffolk counties in Massachusetts and York County in what would become Maine. The editors have provided full, verbatim abstracts for all wills and for some other important documents, such as estate distributions. Other documents, including especially probate inventories, are presented as brief abstracts. When no citation for a document is provided, the assumption is that that document is in the original province files. Complete volume and page citations are provided for documents found only in the province record books, or in the files and records of other jurisdictions. Some of the volumes have introductory matter describing in more detail the preparation of the material for publication. The introduction to the ninth volume includes a list of all New Hampshire counties, followed by a list of all New Hampshire towns, with their dates of incorporation, and the county or counties within which the town fell. All volumes conclude with an every-name index. The CD includes high-quality images of every page as originally published (not just a transcript) and is fully searchable using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 5 or later recommended) on any Windows, Macintosh, or Unix computer. While most genealogists and historians in Ireland will be familiar with the manuscript 1901 and 1911 Censuses of Ireland detailing households and the individuals contained therein, the statistical data that was gathered, analysed and published in tabular form is often easily overlooked. Each county was surveyed with the aim of determining the 'actual state, capabilities and defects of agriculture, manufactures and rural economy'. In practice the surveys contained a vast quantity of local information on almost every aspect of the county surveyed. Because these studies were carried out under central direction the quality of the information provided is good, and given their early date, they remain an invaluable source for the study of each county. Spread over four hundred pages Henderson provides a street directory, alphabetical list of the inhabitants and a trade directory of the city, amounting to approximately 16,000 names. To this day it remains one of the most important sources we have about the nineteenth century Irish, as witnessed by its continued inclusion on university reading lists. The number of Irish people in Britain grew dramatically in the 1800s, especially in Liverpool. In 1841 over 50,000 Liverpudlians were Irish-born, which had increased to over 70,000 in 1881.
