This extremely popular annual event has a reputation for its unrivaled speaker list, exceeding even that of most land-based family history conferences. Although not providing lectures, the following additional speakers will host breakfasts and private consultations: - Robert Charles Anderson, FASG, Director of the Great Migration Study Project for NEHGS. - Sandra Hewlett, CG, professional researcher and councilor for the New England Historic Genealogical Society. - Dick Eastman, technology expert and editor of Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter. In addition to attending the main lectures, users of The Master Genealogist (TMG) project manager will find a variety of presentations about how to make the most of that software and its companion programs. Attendees will meet Bob Velke, President of Wholly Genes, Inc., and be able to schedule private consultations with him and many other prominent researchers in the TMG community, including John Cardinal, Lee Hoffman, Jim Byram, and members of the TMG support team. Planned cocktail parties and other events will give attendees the chance to mingle with other group members, swap research interests, and make new friends. This directory itemizes the leading businessmen of the time to which was added separate lists of State and City officials, notary publics, lawyers, bankers as well as the members of some notable societies, including the Cincinnati, St. Andrew's, the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen, and the Society of Peruke Makers and Hair Dressers. Also included from the original publication is an almanack and table of coin valuations. To this 1905 reprint of the original directory was also added a great, high-resolution map of New York in 1786 and a description of the city in that year by Noah Webster. A list of street name changes will also prove helpful to researchers (e.g., Dock Street was changed to Pearl St. between Broad Street and Hanover Square). Daniel S. (more...) === Did You Know? ====================== DID YOU KNOW that you can use TMG's "Merge Two People" feature (on the Tools menu) to compare the events of any two people side-by-side, even if you don't intend to merge them? You can even see the events of both people combined in a single chronological list. Just don't click on the button! DID YOU KNOW that you can link any external text file to a memo? Just start the memo with an exclamation point followed by the fullpath and name of the file (e.g., "!c:\mydata\mybiography.txt"). Narrative reports will insert the external text just as though you had typed it into the memo. You can even click on the button to edit the text file directly in TMG. Note however it must be a plain text file, not a .DOC or other file containing formatting codes. DID YOU KNOW that an event memo can contain multiple pieces that you can refer to independently in the sentence? Just separate the pieces with "||" (two vertical bars) and refer to them as [M1], [M2]...[M9] in the sentence template. DID YOU KNOW that you can prevent the printing of most text fields by entering "-" (a minus sign) as the first character? This is called "excluded" data and it works on place fields, memo fields, citation details, source elements, etc. (but not dates). Most reports have an option to override that exclusion and ignore the minus sign but if you don't want to take that risk then start the field with "--" (two minus signs). That is called "double excluded" data and cannot be overridden. DID YOU KNOW that there is more than one formula for Soundex? Indexing projects have used several different interpretations of the Soundex rules and you could miss your family members if you don't use the right one! TMG's Soundex Calculator (on the Tools menu) will report the most commonly-accepted Soundex code as well as any likely variations. Enter "Burroughs," for instance, and it will report that you should check B620 and B622. DID YOU KNOW that you can sort the Picklist or Project Explorer by the Soundex of the surname so that like-sounding names are sorted together regardless of their spellings (e.g., SMITH and SMYTH)? You'll find the Soundex options under the "Sort by" field at the top of the Picklist and Project Explorer windows. Those screens use the most common interpretation of the Soundex rules (see above). DID YOU KNOW that you can easily make an exact copy of a tag? This is sometimes handy if you want to enter several variations of the same event for a person (e.g., RESIDENCE) or copy a relationship tag (e.g., FATHER-BIO) to link the same parent to several different children that are already in the project. Just highlight the tag to be duplicated and select "Copy Tag" from the Add menu. All of the details, _including_ source citations, are duplicated. You can then edit the new tag to change some of those details. DID YOU KNOW that you can configure TMG so that it displays graphic lines between the rows of lists (e.g., event list, children list, sibling list, etc.)? Some people find that this makes it easier to follow a row of data across the screen. Access File > Preferences > Program Options > Lists and you'll find three related check boxes that control this feature. DID YOU KNOW that on the Person View you can simply point with the mouse to a tag's Name/Place column value (without clicking!) to see a long memo that is otherwise hidden from view? To turn this feature on, access File > Preferences > Program Options > Item Tips. You'll also find other check boxes there to use this "Item Tips" feature on other windows. DID YOU KNOW that you can display more than one line for each event on the Person View? Just right-click on the list and choose "Display more rows per tag". That same option can be controlled from File > Preferences > Program Options > Tag Box screen. DID YOU KNOW that you there is a feature in TMG that will evaluate your system and give you advice about how to make the program run faster?
