rarmstrong 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2008 I have reported my problem to Tech Support and they have responded two times with solutions that did not work, so I began to wonder if the problem was unique to my computer and operating system. That is why I am posting this topic to see if anyone else has experenced the problem. Using TMG v7 with Windows Vista Home Premium on a brand new Dell desktop computer with everything up to date; if I make a pedigree report on an individual and select "Save to File" and make that file a pdf file, then when I execute the command, I start getting error messages and ultimatly TMG bombs out and my computer goes back to the Windows Vista screen. It happens every time I try that report, but all the other features I have tried thus far on my new machine with TMG v7 work fine. I installed TMG v7 on my old machine running Windows XP and the same report executed the same way works fine. Just to reinterate, this is a new computer that came from Dell the second week of December with Windows Vista Home Premium preinstalled and it worked right out of the box. All I have done is to keep Windows Vista updated from the Microsot site and installed the programs I use all of the time and kept them up to date. I have and use the following major programs on this machine: Microsoft Office Pro 2007 Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional Adobe CS3 and of course TMG v7 Has anyone else experenced this problem or even tried that specific way to do that report?? Jim Byram 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 The PDF printer is used 'on-the-fly' by default. The first thing to try is to permanently install the PDF printer driver from File / Printer Setup. If that doesn't work, the second thing to try is to refresh the installation by reinstalling over the top of the current installation. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Jim, Before I give your advise a try, the first thing the TMG Tech Support said for me to do was to uninstall the Wholly Genes PDF Printer, if it was installed. In my case it was not installed, so it did not enter into the solution of the problem. However, I remember that when I initially installed TMG there was a question that popped up asking if I wanted to install the PDF Printer and I declined. Which brings up my questions to you: 1-If I permanently install the PDF printer driver from File/Printer Setup, will that be doing exactly what TMG Tech support warned me against when he had me check and uninstall the TMG PDF Printer if it was installed? 2-If I reinstall TMG over the existing copy as you suggest, should I tell it to install the Wholly Genes PDF Printer when the question is asked during installation? The fact that Phil with Wholly Genes Tech Support in his email said to do the the following to fix the problem and neither suggestion worked: Beginning of Phil's email. "Two things. Open the Control Panel and select Printers. Is the Wholly Genes PDF printer installed. If so uninstall it. TMG will pick up the PDF printer on the 'fly' if it's needed. Next open TMG and select the report. Near the top, just under the Configuration Name there is an Add and Delete button. Click on Delete. You'll be told this is a standard report and can't be deleted and asked if you want to reset to the defaults. Answer YES. Then try the report again." End of Phil's email to me. BTW, Phils solution did not fix my problem. Phil's email to me leads me to think that the Wholly Genes PDF Printer will not work with Windows Vista Home Premium. Is that correct, or is the problem I am having not happening with every Windows Vista Home Premium installation? I appreciate any help you can provide and I will carry through with your suggestions when I receive the answers to my concerns as expressed above. The installer does copy files related to the PDF printer driver to the rrw folder in the TMG7 program folder but those copies should not invoke any sort of message about installing the PDF printer driver. Like I said above... The PDF printer is normally used on-the-fly. On some systems, this doesn't work and the printer needs to be installed permanently as I suggested. You can tell whether the PDF printer is installed or not by checking your printer list and looking for "Wholly Genes PDF Writer v3". Reinstalling the program over the top of the existing program should not invoke any sort of prompts about installing the PDF printer driver. If you get any such messages during the program installation, please copy the text of all prompts exactly and report them back here. If necessary, I'll need to look at the INSTALL.LOG file from the sysdata folder in your TMG7 program folder. btw... Occasionally, an Amyuni PDF printer driver installed by another application (such as Family Tree Maker) can interfere with the installation of the TMG PDF printer driver. The solution in those cases is to delete those printer drivers and then the TMG driver will install. The FTM driver would be automatically be reinstalled the next time that you tried to use it. K., good news for me, the first thing you suggested to do, that is to permanently install the PDF printer driver from File/Setup, worked. It installed and the report printed to .pdf file works fine now. I am not going any further since that worked, but I thank you for the help. Especially the information concerning the Amyuni PDF print driver and the fact that if I had needed to uninstall it, the next time the program that used it would install it again. That was bothering me, I was afraid that if I had to uinstall any of the PDF printers the program that initially installed it would quit working. Luckly I did not need to do that, but had it been necessary your information reassured me that I would not be just transfering the problem from one program to another. As to the window asking if I wanted to install the PDF printer when I was installing V7, I have thought about where that happened and I now believe it may have happened the first time I ran V7 after installation. Unfortunantly I cannot be sure that it was not during installation. Wherever it happened, at the time, I said NO because somewhere I had read that you should say no to that prompt. The fact that the PDF printer was not there seems to have caused my problem it seems. You know, the programmers at TMG may want to revisit that function, the PDF printer, and make the call more solid as to which driver they are calling. The fact that TMG went out and grabbed the wrong driver is not a good thing, that should never happen. I did not have a Amyuni PDF Printer installed on my computer and TMG still went out, used the wrong driver, and completely bombed out. Thank you very much for the help, now back to Genealogy.
