Correct, having the information show up in a report is what I am interested in. So far, the history tags seem to be working, but it occurred to me there might be a better way of causing that to happen. Thanks.

  4. History Tags

You raise a good point. If one only wants to see these special historical events on screen, then timelines will do that. But if one wants the event to output in a report then true event tags are required, and History tags can serve that purpose.
  5. History Tags

There is always more to learn; thanks for all the comments. I will have to go back and look at the timelines feature again. I am not so much worried over GEDCOM files, at this point, rather in generating reports which I can use for family research papers my daughter and I have been writing. These papers focus on family stories (e.g. the uncle who drove the casket of his deceased son from California to Missouri), and I am always looking for ways to generate reports in a way to speed that process up. Thanks for the ideas.

Your question about timelines made me look closer at them as I had not done so for several years. I also had failed to include their description in my on-line book. A more careful and complete description of Timelines has now been included there. See: https://www.mjh-nm.net/STYLE.HTML#DisplayTimelines Hope this gives you better ideas on using Timelines.
  7. History Tags

Glad you found the information about Timelines valuable, Doris. Yes, you are correct about History tags and GEDCOM. GEDCOM requires that any tag be assigned to at least one Principal, and does not understand Witnesses who are the only links to History tags. While the TMG Enhanced GEDCOM Export option can include non-standard entries to identify Witnesses, those custom entries must be part of a tag which has at least one Principal. Since History tags have no Principals there is no GEDCOM construct to output such tags. They are only one of several types of TMG data which have no way of being output to GEDCOM. Other software that uses direct import of TMG databases "could" choose to import History tags and convert them to "something" in their program. But that is up to each such software and not guaranteed.
  8. History Tags

Two items I failed to note above. In Lee's list of Timeline files I mention, there are several files whose row is marked with a green dot. These files came with your TMG installation and were installed in a "timeline" folder where the program itself was installed. Each timeline consists of two database files: *.DBF and *.DBT, and a Word file *.DOC which describes the timeline events in the file. If you want to use one of these timelines, copy all three files from this program folder to your project's timeline folder. That way you can edit the timeline events without altering the original timeline database. Based on the comments by Morbius the timeline files already on the computer with their names beginning with VAWVCO.* will probably be of interest. As that timeline's .DOC file says, it includes the events of the formation of Virginia and West Virginia counties and Virginia independent cities. I said above about timeline events: "Their extremely useful special feature is that TMG will automatically only show a timeline event in the Details of a person if its date is within that person's lifespan." That is not completely accurate. Some timeline events may be entered leaving the month and/or day zero. This implies a "circa" date for the year which will mean the event will display in the person's Details plus or minus the number of years from the person's birth or death as set for the meaning of circa in Preferences // Current Project Options // Advanced Hope this gives you further ideas,

Thank you, Michael, for that valuable info about beesoft. I had no idea. Also am I correct in stating that the History tag does not transfer via Gedcom or direct software to other companies (in case you ever need to leave TMG)? Doris
  10. History Tags

Hi Morbius, History event tags and Timeline files were designed for two very different purposes. Based on your example uses I believe you probably want to use Timelines instead of History tags. History tags were intended to be used to document events which directly involved some number of people, with no one person Principal to the event. These tags are designed to have sentences to output in narratives, Dates, Locations, and source citations like any other event involving a person. These events will display in the Details of every person who is linked as a Witness to the event, regardless of whether the date of the event is within the lifespan of that person. Timelines were intended to simply insert the names of a group of related events into a person's Details according to the dates of those events. These events do not have Locations or Citations, only a descriptive name and date. Their extremely useful special feature is that TMG will automatically only show a timeline event in the Details of a person if its date is within that person's lifespan. You can collect a group of event names and dates into a file, such as a timeline file for West Virginia, which identify creation of the state and formations of all the counties. You could then either globally turn on/off the display of that set of timeline events, or link that set of timeline events to only display for selected people. Even then timeline events will not display unless you check the option to show timelines in Preferences // Program Options // Tag Box. The TMG Timeline Manager (under Tools) is a bit awkward to use to create a set of events for a timeline file. But if the number of events is small it is quite adequate since you only enter a date and event name. As an aid there are several timeline files which users have created for various topics that can be downloaded into the project's Timelines folder. See the list of timeline files collected by Lee Hoffman on his TMG Tips site: http://www.tmgtips.com/timelines.htm There also is a FREE utility built specially to make it easier to make and use timelines for your project. It is by BeeSoft who make PathWiz! Last I looked at this utility was at Version 3, which offered a number of features to help you create and manage your TMG timeline files by enabling timelines restricted to particular TMG person numbers in 3 ways: . individually . via an entered list . using the persons in a Focus Group The program also offers a 'check' box to allow a view of the filter parameters from the ini file before proceeding with a run. Default setting is 'off''. http://beesoft.soho.on.net/BeeSoft/Timeliner/index.html Hope this gives you ideas,
  11. History Tags

As I start to use TMG to generate reports for research papers, I find I am using history tags much more often. This, in order to maintain an historical perspective to those reports. For example, a History Tag noting the creation of West Virginia during the civil war, in order to sort out people actually born in West Virginia from those born in a part of Virginia that is now (post civil war) part of West Virginia (usually such people born before June 1853 are reported as having been born in West Virginia, even though it didn't yet exist). I haven't been using Timelines, but I have found History Tags noting such things as when a state became a state, changes to county boundaries, and other historic events useful. I am wondering how others are using History Tags, and was hoping for some additional ideas.
  12. TMGU Find/Replace - Reposting

Thanks, svhous. I have done that, but I'm trying to remove an asterisk from the names of these people. TMGU doesn't seem to have that feature, unless I'm missing something. Doris
  13. TMGU Find/Replace - Reposting

I used a flag and color, which seems to work OK. Do you have an immigrant flag?
  14. Is there a way to target the Name field to remove the asterisk I have attached to the first name of every immigrant in my database? It is interfering with the matching algorithms at Ancestry, MyHeritage, etc. Or is there some other way to accomplish this? Thank you. Doris
  15. TMGU Find/Replace

    Thank you, Terry.
  16. TMGU Find/Replace

Doris, It doesn't look like you can access the Given Name field from Find and Replace. I think you need to use Change Name Parts. It's easy to find a Given name ending with the asterisk but it's not obvious to me how to remove it. I think it requires some techniques I've used but forgotten. I expect John Cardinal to see your post soon and explain how to do it.
  17. In order to quickly spot all my immigrant ancestors, I attached an asterisk to the end of the person's first name. It also lets me attach the immigrant icon. Now, many years later, I know that this asterisk interferes with the matching algorithms at all the companies. I've been hoping their programming would eventually correct this, but the problem is just getting worse. I thought TMGU's Find/Replace facility would let me remove these asterisks, but I can't find how to do it. (1) How do I identify the first name as the target in TMGU? Or is there another way (besides manually)? (2) Has anyone found a way to accomplish what I want? And, oh by the way, (3) How to make direct ancestors stand out? I already use a pedigree icon in SS that shows up on person pages and in the index, but I'm thinking of the situation where one is looking at a person page for someone who has multiple children. To find the one child who is in my direct line, I now have to click on all of them to see their relationship to me. Ideally, I could use a flag that would cause the name field for each direct line person to display in color or italics or something distinctive, and of course that would carry forward via GEDCOM or transfer and on to SS, GS, GP. Thank you for any suggestions. Doris Wheeler
  18. Howdy, folks, it's great to see that there is still a substantial user base for TMG. I have long used TMG 9.05 on both a desktop computer and a laptop, using the backup/restore method to move a project from one machine to the other and then back again. If possible, I would like to leave the data project on my desktop computer but access and edit it sometimes from my laptop, eliminating the hassle. The desktop runs Windows 10 and the laptop runs Windows 8. Please note that I can edit a local project with either machine; the problem I am having is only in trying to edit a project across the network. I've verified that all the files in the project directory are not labelled Read-only. I'm not using any third-party virus or firewall protection. From my laptop, I opened the project by using File --> Open Project and navigating to the project file located on my desktop via the network. So far so good, it opens and I can navigate, etc. But I discovered after a bit of experimentation that none of my edits were being saved. I can edit a tag, for example, changing a date and adding a citation, but after saving and closing the tag, when I open it up again, the changes are not there. The Last Edited Date does not change. Ditto creating a new person. It's as if I'm in Read-Only mode, only there are no grayed-out functions and no warnings or error messages. Do I need to change the data paths text configuration file, or some other configuration, such as in Preferences --> Current Project Options --> Advanced where all the paths still point to C:\ ? As an experiment I tried removing the local copy of the project, and although I got a startup message that my exhibits folder didn't exist (a subdirectory of the specific project directory), nothing else changed as far as I can tell. Do I need to adjust something with sharing or Windows Firewall/Defender/whatever they're calling it these days? As an aside, I think I have just inadvertently discovered one of the risks of accessing a project over a network. While writing this message using my desktop computer, I closed the laptop (right here beside me) to put it to sleep while I was working here (to save battery life). When I opened it up again to verify something, I tried to close the project, but got this error message: Error reading file \\path\projectname_n.dbf 8 APPOBJECT.MSAVEINI Aborting and retrying didn't fix it, but when I ignored it I could close the project. (Since it won't save any changes there's little likelihood that anything was actually corrupted, but I'll Validate File Integrity here on my desktop just to be sure.) So it looks like there's a risk of data corruption if the network connections are interrupted, such as by the laptop going to sleep, or perhaps the wireless connection being disrupted, or something like that. (I also understand that I'll have to be careful not to accidentally open the project at the same time from both machines.)
  19. To find individuals with a memo containing a certain word or sequence of words I am using a List of Events with the following filter: Memo contains [?] AND Principal 1... Surname =Equals [?] END The filter generates a report showing all individuals of a certain surname that have have the word or sequence of words in any memo.
  20. Can I search for text in memo field?

Sure you can, Anita, To find all events which contain the search text, use a filtered List of Events report. For example, if you were looking for the text GWORP, one of your filter conditions would be: Memo // Contains // GWORP You can also further restrict the report with other filter conditions. Use appropriate output columns to specify the Principals of each event and appropriate columns to identify each specific event. Alternatively to simply find people who have any event with this search text, use a filtered Project Explorer. A filter condition could be: Any Event... // Memo // Contains // GWORP That will find people with such an event, but will not tell you which of their events has this memo text. Hope this gives you ideas,
  21. Sometimes I run across a name or a place name in my research that I am SURE I have placed in a project somewhere, probably in the memo field, if the person doesn't connect to any of my individuals immediately. Then, is it possible to search the entire project for that elusive name, a person who has not been added as a new individual?? Thanks in advance for any help. Anita Tally
  22. gedcom export error

Thanks Jim! I have just completed one more successful export. That makes 3 gedcom exports now, with no failures, with the IDrive service stopped. John
  23. gedcom export error

    John, Nice detective work. Jim
  24. gedcom export error

A follow-up on my gedcom export problem. After spending hours with Process Monitor, following the action in the TMG Temp folder where the export process (mostly ?) takes place, setting various filters to make the monitoring manageable, I have found that my IDrive backup program's service (id_service.exe) was tracking all the activity in that folder. A reminder: the Temp folder is located (for me) here: C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\TMG***** I have IDrive set to *exclude* the entire C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp folder. Despite this, its backup engine id_service was monitoring activity in the TMG Temp folder and resulting in Sharing Violations with TMG. By stopping the ID service I have now done two successful Gedcom exports in a row. I will try more later today and hope for the best. I will contact IDrive about this, but I suspect I will be looking for another program at some point. The workaround of temporarily stopping the service is not a huge issue, but I shouldn't have to do it, although it's certainly a great deal simpler than the previous best workaround, running TMG under Wine on a Linux box. 25. gedcom export error

Thanks for looking into this, Jim. I will continue to try searching for anything which might be monitoring any of the relevant directories in any way, but at the moment I'm out of ideas, unfortunately.
  26. gedcom export error

If you have no program running that is affecting files (security, syncing, real-time backup), I have no idea what is blocking the GEDCOM export. I'm currently running Win10 (17763.379) with Windows Defender and have never had a problem exporting a GEDCOM (in the past or now).
  27. gedcom export error

Jim - Yes, I disabled BitDefender in its Settings screen and tried exporting a gedcom file. Quickly got the same error appearing.
