XP to Vista and back again

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of installing TMG v7 on a new laptop, with Vista Home Premium. I have upgraded the desktop machine (which has XP installed) to 7.03 and backed-up to a stick so I could do a restore. I ran into a couple of problems that I've found the answers to in this forum, thanks; will see if I can sort that out tomorrow. My main concern, at the moment, is the different way the two OSs (XP & Vista) arrange their files.

One of the reasons I got the laptop was so I could take my TMG with me when we went travelling and visiting, so data could be entered there and then, while it was fresh, and also to make sure I wasn't doubling up on research. My plan was to then download it to the desktop machine, on our return home, as the main repository. Is that a viable option, given that the file paths are different? Or am I going to have to make a decision to use one or the other, or to manually re-enter everything into the second machine?

The way that I deal with this is simple...

When transferring data, only backup and restore the project, accents, filters and (optionally) exhibits.

Now the important part...

On all machines, I relocate the My Documents/Documents folder to a common path. I happen to use:

D:\User_data\Documents

With that done, the projects use the same user data paths on all machines.

Since I'm not moving the shared program data and the user program data with backup and restore, the fact that those data folders use different paths under WinXP and WinVista makes no difference.

You relocate the My Documents/Documents folder by right-clicking on the My Documents/Documents icon on the desktop and selecting Properties and using the Location tab to relocate the folder. You can also right-click on the start menu entry to do this. I'd create the new folder before relocating so that you can simply select it.

If you relocate My Documents/Documents be sure to correct the paths on the TMG Preferences / Advanced tab the next time that a project is opened.

(I do this to place all user data for all programs on a different drive to make backing up the user data for the system easier. You could just create a new TMG data folder on the root and put your user data folder there. The point is to use the same TMG user data paths on all machines.)

Thanks, Jim, that was fairly painless.

All I have to do now is upgrade the laptop to TMG v7.03, when I get my wireless connection set up.

Jim,

That's a very practical solution to the dilemma, however, it isn't always so:

I have come here from another discussion with Virginia, as I've been having problems with project data, since I introduced some custom buttons. (for the very first time - I've run without them till now)

I added the same buttons on 1) My Windows Vista PC and 2) My Windows XP laptop. (Backup and Restore buttons)

In my case, the solution isn't practical because:

1) I had moved my documents directory on my Vista PC to a new Hard drive (F:\) due to increasing size of Pictures folder and rapidly decreasing space on C:\ because of this.

2) My laptop has only one single partition drive (C:\) and I cannot therefore create the same structure as my PC.

I also feel that doing what you suggest, for many would be an advanced IT task and a 'risk' - I speak from experience as an IT Technician having seen customers attempt it and it going horribly wrong.

I feel it would be far more eloquent, if the programmers could introduce variables to cope with this in the way that Windows does. I.E. if you do Start>Run and type %systemroot% an Explorer window opens to your Windows install directory, be it C:\Windows, E:\Winnt or F:\Thingy

Whollygenes surely knew of the potential problems when Microsoft changed the protocol for the 'My Documents' directory moving from \Documents and Settings to \Users

Therefore, if they adopted something like %Userdata% etc, then it would work across Windows versions, as this would take care of the location up to the point of the installed 'The Master Genealogist v7' structure.

I.E. "%userdata%\The Master Genealogist v7" would be normalised across Windows version to equate to:

Vista

<Drive>:\Users\<username>\Documents\The Master Genealogist v7

XP/Win2K

<Drive>:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v7

...and similar for Shared/User Program Data directories.
