TMG8, you're leaving me hanging....

Recommended Posts

the Question: can this tmg 8 crash issue be resolved?

the system: Win 7 Professional sp1 64bit, Intel 15 Quad core 2.8Ghz, 8GB DDR3, nVidia GTX-460, enough disk space to put the Library of Congress to shame, (well maybe not).

the problem: TMG 8 Hangs, alot, especially if I add ac ouple (read, 2 or 3) people and basic events (BMD), or run a report, or refresh the "relationship" tag. I though by ditching 7 and going to 8, I would not have these issues anymore.

The error logs (4 of hundreds from my event log, and all "red" entries are TMG related:

The next time this happens, go to Window on the TMG menu and click on 'Center the Current Window'. This would bring to the forefront any window that might have opened behind your layout and is waiting for your response.

Are there any TMG error messages associated with the event? TMG error messages are saved in the error.txt file. You can find that file in TMG / Help / Access Folders / Logs Folder / Error.txt. If there were no error messages there would not be an Error.txt file.

Does this happen if TMG is the only program running?

here is the contents of the "error.txt" file:

17-01-2012, 23:50:10 12Variable 'GCSELECTEDPOPUP' is not found. 196 CUSSHORTCUTMANAGER.SHOWMENU

17-01-2012, 23:50:16 12Variable 'GCSELECTEDPOPUP' is not found. 196 CUSSHORTCUTMANAGER.SHOWMENU

17-01-2012, 23:50:17 12Variable 'GCSELECTEDPOPUP' is not found. 196 CUSSHORTCUTMANAGER.SHOWMENU

21-03-2012, 11:21:05 230Array dimensions are invalid. 67 FRMPLACESORT.INIT

No other errors, the "Title Bar" gets appended with "(Not Responding)"

Happens solo, and with other apps running. Tried disabling unneeded start up apps (all except antivirus) and still happens. tried running the "optimize, validate, optimize, reindex, optimize routine, after 10 changes, 5 changes, 1 changes, and still happens randomly.

Have let it run over night before, to see if it unhangs. have moved it to the background and used other programs while it is non-responsive (including 3d studio max, dreamweaver, multiple instances of eve-online, Minecraft, HD movies both watching, streaming or converting to MKV files, designing/editing in pshop or illustrator, video editing in premiere, etc.), and all other applications are responsive and working as intended.

Last night, I was navigating from one individual to another, and it would not pull up the selected individual. I could "Go To" the indi number, but could not mouse back and forth. Checked fro hidden updates afte my post last night, only update was a minor nVidia driver update.

The PC and OS are stable (I build and fix these for a living, A+,Net+,Sec+,MCITP), Just TMG seems to not be a happy camper.

I am looking at some resources, programmatically, to try to "trap" what is making tmg unhappy, but in the end, Wholly Genes sold an app to me, not paid me to test/develop on it.

Hopefully someone can resolve this, if not, a semi-long time TMG (v6+) user may fly the coup.

Help me obi-wan kenobi, you're my only..... oh wait, wrong realm

Hmmm... I am just a user like Virginia, but the error messages "seem" to be saying something about a right-click menu and Places. Do you have any clue as to what you are doing in TMG at the time this happens? Do you remember doing a right-click for some specific reason? Can you think of anything that is consistent about the times it hangs? I am guessing it must be some "special" sequence of things you are doing that is triggering this "hang" as I have not heard other users having this problem.

You said: "Help me obi-wan kenobi..." and the obvious reply is "Just trust the Force"

Unless you are, for example, sending a lengthy journal report to Word - which can take a long time - letting TMG run over night seems unintuitive to me. A standard recommendation for 'freeze' problems in TMG is shutting the program down and rebooting the computer.

Closing TMG with the Task Manager risks losing data and should be avoided if possible. If TMG menus are dimmed and the program is 'frozen', the recommended workaround is to Check for an Update (on the Help menu) - if that option is available. This will close any open data files and shut TMG down in an orderly fashion. You can then cancel the update.

well I was just reading virginia's and Michael's replies, and navigating up an ancestor line, and it hung again (still hung as I type this). As shown, app had only been running for 8 minutes. Task Manager show TMG8 only using 25% cpu and only 48MB of Memory, Captured a dump file, and here is the dump file (as viewed in MS Debugger):

Virginia: Yes "That would be totally unintuitive to me. A standard recommendation for 'freeze' problems in TMG is shutting the program down and rebooting the computer.", but I have been dealing with these crashes for a while, and restarting my pc every 10 minutes for one app crashing, would seriously deter me from genealogy, or at lest using TMG.

"Closing TMG with the Task Manager risks losing data and should be avoided if possible. "Do you use any of the customizable search sites in TMG - like MapQuest, USGS, DigitalBooks? I've seen an occasional hang if the site address is outdated."

I use none of the biult in search features in TMG. Only 2 apps need to talk to the internet in my opinion: Windows and Firefox.

thanks in advance, and i hope we can nai lthis one finally (as I said, I had similar, but not Quite as frequent, issue with TMG7, even on XP). In the meantime, I am going to look into possibly something with a more robust and updated backend.

From your descriptions above I get the idea that any other application and/or service running on your system may be the root cause of these "application hanging issues" you're experiencing.

The dump file indicates a possible conflict with vfp9 (MS Visual Fox Pro 9 = TMG's "underlying, essential database").

The following is just something to try in order to see if it makes a difference:

- close all other applications

- turn your virus scanner / firewall and all other possibly installed "security software programs" off

- stop any/all automated update-services (i.e. virus, spam etc..), running in the background on your system.

Then run TMGv8 and work with it for some time (please not just a few minutes).

Does it still hang?

Danke für den Vorschlag, but I cannot condone disabling Anti-virus software on any internet connected pc.

I am aware of what vfp9 is, its history, and it's slotted "end of support" and end of development (officially).

I have ran a copy of my database, after converting it (copies of the actual tables, not an export), under 2 flavors of sql, and can run CRUD's against it without issues, I am not a front end guy though.

I do not want to reinvent the wheel. I would like the wheel to work as intended :)

Does any one at Wholly Genes read this forum? Or any die-haed DBA's? Would love their take.

**Also of note, TMG is the only standard spplication that has hung/crashed on this pc, since July 2011, through normal use. The O/S and hardware have been stable since Aug 8th, 2010 (assembly and installation date).

You mentioned not being able to mouse back and forth the other night when navigating - about the time of a background nVidia driver update. Are you able to discount the video card/driver as a factor - overheating or memory? In 2005 (WinXP then) we had a rash of 'abrupt exit' problems with TMG. The program would shut down without warning and with no common factor or action within TMG. In that case a nVidia video adapter was mentioned as a possible cause. One of the threads in the TMG mailing list discussion is here.

Just a shot in the dark.

thanks, the driver update was the only system driver or os update that was listed as available. I ran it after a reboot, and tmg still hangs randomly. It was not actually updating during the crash. none of the thermal sensors on my mobo or case are triggered/abnormally high. the video card cooling fan, case fans, and cpu fans are clean and spinning at normal rpm (only time they kick into high rpm is when rendering textures in solidworks).

Bitte, sehr gerne geschehen. However, it seems to me that you may have misunderstood or may be misinterpreting what I was trying to suggest as a temporary test only while your pc is NOT connected to the internet!!

Other than that I am still convinced (supported by the information you provided) that any other third party software and/or service running on your machine may be causing TMG's hangs in your specific situation.

Just my two cents worth as a user of TMG since Version 5, but I can count the number of times that I've had to Task Manager kill TMG on one hand and still have a finger or two left over. My experience includes many versions of Windows and several different computers. I am currently running TMG 8 on Win7 64 bit on a 6 core machine, as well as my dual core laptop. It hasn't crashed in the way you describe, in fact it hasn't crashed at all. Perhaps there is some other conflict????

necro-post, I know, but I am back as the problem is back.

Doffutt, is not my 'puter or one of my applicatins or services, as the response and fixed file (I had to send them my whole pjc set) I received last spring was accompanied by the following text from support "90% of the database files had an invalid flag which our in-house program fixed." Was never told which flag or table was the issue, just took it fro granted it was fixed, until it started rearing it's head again (the hanging issues) as I kick into my history season (did not play much summer/fall, life happens). If I can get a definitive answer and fix, I will post it. I email ed support again this morning, but am raching out to any DBA's, esp with vfp experience in regards to tmg, as to what to look for on my own. I am not a dba, but am certified/experienced in other MIS/NOC/IT foci.

thanks
