Gedcom Output - Surnames Only, Limited Birth/Death Info

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to create a Gedcom that contains only surnames, birth year, birth state, death year, death state? I have about 1000 people in my focus group that should be included in the Gedcom file.

Thank you!

TMG will allow you to export only specific tag types, but I don't believe there is a way to export only specific fields from those tag types.

I looked at whether you could remove the fields you want to omit from the GEDCOM after you create it, and that looks very difficult to do.

Thanks for your quick response, Terry. If you find any other genealogy programs or tools that can create this type of Gedcom, please let me know. I want to create a paired-down file for DNA sites (GEDMATCH.com, 23andMe, AncestryDNA, and Family Tree DNA) and am uncomfortable submitting the entire fields for my tree. Maybe others would also be interested in this?

To anyone interested in this subject:

It took a couple of hours of experimentation but I was able to do this myself using Excel and Notepad. I also used Lee Hoffman's Related_by Flag to automatically generate the TMG file of people of interest for DNA purposes. I am not a programmer and the Excel formulas are not elegant, but the file has been created with almost no manual editing. The Gedcom consists of surnames only, birth/death years, birth/death states. If anyone else wants to do this or something similar I'd be happy to share my process.
