When not doing genealogy I like to cook and am a volunteer editor, writing about cheese, for Cookipedia and Mundoquesos websites. Yes, cheese is serious stuff.
  1. I have recently bought a new computer onto which I have reinstalled TMG V8 UK edition and included the product reg code. However, after 7 days, I am reverted to what appears to be a trial edition and cannot understand the reason why. I had no such problem on my old computer. Does anyone have any reasons why this should keep happening as it is very annoying to be constantly typing in the very lengthy code every 7 days? Thanks
  2. Problems with imported place names

Thank you for your replies :-) JB
  3. Problems using 'check for duplicate people'

Thank you yet again for your help. I have downloaded the TMG Utilities and seem to recall using them before, but I had just forgotten about them. JB
  4. Problems using 'check for duplicate people'

Thank you again! Yes, I am now systematically going through the picklist. I don't know what TMG Utility is and cannot find it anywhere. I had TMG 4 before and haven't got used to V8 yet. JB
  5. Problems using 'check for duplicate people'

Thank you for your reply Michael. The names and dates have imported perfectly but one thing I have noticed in the picklist is that the imported people don't have an asterisk by their names, denoting a primary tag, so I wonder if that is the problem? Do you know of any way in which I can make these primary? I did a back up a few days ago, but didn't think to do one before I imported the file :-(. JB
  6. Am tearing my hair out!! I imported some data from an old .sqz file into an existing project and copied it to my existing data set, deleting the data set that was imported. So far, so good. However, numerous people in the old file are duplicated in the current project, so I need to do a lot of merging. I used the check for duplicate people facility but cannot get it to come up with what it should do. On the default setting, none of the people who should be merged show up. I have tried fiddling with different settings and the only way I can get the people to be merged to show up is to have no evaluation for given names and it comes up with over 16,000 possibilities from a data set of just over 3,000. It seems to have no regard for dates either, matching my 18 year old daughter with some ggg aunt from the 19th century and they don't even have the same initials. Most of the people to be merged have exact surnames in both sets of information, but don't show up when checking the exact surname or soundex boxes. What am I doing wrong? Thank you!
  7. Problems with imported place names

Thank you Terry, that's great! All sorted now JB
  8. I have just bought V8 (UK edition) and imported some of my stuff from a gedcom, but most of the village names appear in the place allocated for 'country'. Is there any way in which I can transfer them to 'village / area' in bulk? Thank you. JB
