Wish List: Master Source Type List -- add no. sources in use

Recommended Posts

Hi all:

I've been trying to clear my project of custom source types that are no longer in use. Tech Support (thank you!) helped me run one report for all sources reporting the source type, which I sorted by source type. This helps me find distinguish between custom source types that are used often or rarely, but it doesn't seem to report the custom source types that are used -0- (zero) times.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

When you open the master source list (less mode), there is a nice little column to the right showing how many times the sources have been cited. It would be wonderful if the source type list had a similar notation, for the number of sources that use that source type.

Thank you for your consideration. --GJ

I understand your desire for this wish. I am unaware of any report either in TMG itself or in the TMG Utility that is designed to list the Source Types defined. There are lots of ways to list all the sources you have created, including identifying their underlying source type, but not just the types, and nothing to identify whether or how many sources are based on a given type.

I assume Tech Support suggested running a List of Sources report in columnar mode for all sources including columns for the # of Citations and the Source Type. For a workaround, obviously that list of all sources identifying underlying source types could be edited to remove duplicates to reduce to a sorted list of source types that are in use. You could then have that list open at the same time as the Master Source Types list and spot the missing (i.e. unused) types. More work, but at least you can get there.

Maybe others will have an idea, but this seems an understandable wish to have either in TMG or in the TMG Utility.

Gene, Have you tried just deleting them. I think it warns you if they are in use and you can just cancel out. Instead of deleting them, I just renamed them to Z-ORIGINAL NAME. That way if I do ever need them, they are right there at the bottom of the list.
