converting from TMG v 4 to 7

Recommended Posts

Hi. I've inherited a TMG version 5 or 6 file (ends with .pjc) with a branch of my family history. However, I only have TMG version 4 which seeks files ending in something else and won't open my file. I've just downloaded a trial version of version 7 to try to open the file but it wants me to backup the file first in version 5 before opening it and as I don't have this version (and you can't seem to download it anymore) I can't do this. Any suggestions about how to proceed would be much appreciated. Thanks.

A TMG project consists of many files. Just the .PJC file won't do. You are saying that you have a project folder with that collection of files including the .PJC file?

If so, contact Support and they can take your files and make a backup.

Hi Anna,

The reason Jim mentions obtaining a "backup" of the Version 5 or 6 file is that when TMG Version 7 attempts to "restore" that backup is when TMG will notice it is an older version. That is when TMG will first do the necessary conversion and then complete the restore. Further, making of backup will ensure that all the many files, in addition to the one ".PJC" file, are all packaged together and available for the necessary conversion prior to completing the restore.

If you do have all the many TMG Version 5 or 6 files, but only have TMG Version 4 yourself, you may wish to simply view this Version 5 or 6 database and then re-enter into your own Version 4 database some of that data. If that makes sense, you can download a 30-day trial copy of TMG v6.12 here:

http://www.whollygenes.com/files/tmg6setup.exe

If you have all the Version 5 or 6 files, then this version of the program should open that database for viewing, and you can have both the Version 6 and your Version 4 program open at the same time to aid in your entering data.

Of course, most of us would encourage you to upgrade your Version 4 to Version 7 to gain access to all the new features. :D But that is a separate issue.

Hope this gives you ideas,

Hi Michael and Jim

Thanks very much for your replies. I did have all the files and downloaded the version 6 and can now view the files - it is very exciting to have a whole arm of the family already done!
