newbie 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2010 Hi everyone, I'm trying to export my entire data base using GEDCOM 5.5. The destination of the export is to Reunion 9. What has gone well is the entire data base except for the tags. The notes have gone well, for example the tag marked 'misc' did not import. I'm at a loss on how to do that. As well, is their a way to determine what tags have been used in the data base? And if so, any way to print a report showing these? (I'm afraid I would need step by step instructions for any kind of a filtered report....) Hope that makes sense, thanks in advance - Derreck
Jim Byram 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2010 The default tag type 'Misc' exports as: 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Misc and that is how it should export. The GEDCOM export tags are set on the Tag Type Definition screen / Other tab. However, unless you understand the GEDCOM v5.5 specs exactly, I would caution against messing with the GEDCOM export settings. Changing the settings is a fast way to break the export if you don't know what you are doing. If you have Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist, I would read the GEDCOM export chapter very carefully. Custom TMG events should always be export as 1 EVEN 2 TYPE GEDCOM tags. Certain TMG data will not export... features not supported by the GEDCOM specs, certain tags with two Principles if the principals are not married or not parents. Terry Reigel 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2010 Derreck, There are a considerable number of things that do not export to GEDCOM because they do not fit any allowable category in the GEDCOM specs. Among Tags, the most common reason they do not export is that they have two principals who are not "a family" - that is, they are neither married nor have children together. And, only certain GEDCOM tag types are allowed to be "family" tags, so others will fail to export even if the two principals are "a family." I suspect one of these issues is at work with your Misc tags. The most complete treatment I know of on this issue is in Jim Byram's chapter on "Exporting" in Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist, which is now out of print but available on CD. Michael Hannah 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2010 As Terry and Jim have mentioned, the issue with GEDCOM export is the lack of features in GEDCOM. It is like showing a color picture in black and white. Many details are lost. As for getting a list of tags used, you posted this in the Version 6 Forum so I assume that is what you have. I don't have that version available to test, but I think Terry's suggestion from 2008 will work. See this post on the RootsWEB TMG e-mail list. You might also review the other suggestions offered in that same thread. Hope this gives you ideas,
newbie 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2010 Thank you Terry, Jim & Michael, Actually I do have the book that you have quoted, guess after a couple of moves and not having done any research for more years than I care to admit, I completely forgot about it. Digging thru some boxes in storage I was able to locate it! I have started reading the chapter re: GEDCOM and am starting to understand. As Michael phrased, I am getting some ideas so I'll be able to do some 'trial & error' and proceed. I was also able to extract some information using Terry's post from Rootsweb. Thanks for that. I'll be kept busy for a bit with the above mentioned ..... don't be surprised if I come calling again for further clarification! Thanks so much - Derreck As Terry and Jim have mentioned, the issue with GEDCOM export is the lack of features in GEDCOM. It is like showing a color picture in black and white. Many details are lost.
