Is there a way to install this software onto a portable device (thumbdrive or external hard drive)?

I wish to install it on my external hard drive then use that as a live backup for the information so i can take it with me when i visit my family to do in person research. I know rootsmagix has this ability, but i when i used the demo of version 8 i really liked it.

No. TMG must be installed on the system that it runs on. A number of required support files are installed to the system folders. TMG has no equivalent of RootsMagic To-Go.
