Wishlist_Importing comma delimited/spec. character data

Recommended Posts

I find it odd that although one can export data in comma or tab delimited form, one cannot import such data. I have tons of stuff I have typed up over the years and would like to be able to import it. The most basic import I would like to do is use a special character (e.g., @) and be allowed, for example, then to use the @ to indicate givenname, surname, and all the rest of the info can go into some kind of a "dump" memo record from which I can extract data later. Does this sound workable?

I also have tons of data in an AskSam database which I would like to import.

Does anyone else feel the need to import such data? Or would you say cut/paste is the only solution? Thanks.

Sam

Ted Pack has described a method to convert text to gedcom using Word or Excel:

http://www.tedpack.org/text2ged.html

There is also a free converter program at:

http://website.lineone.net/~d.j.cooke/wintree.htm

It's down at the bottom of the page and is described as:

"Acc2ged

This is a free utility which may enable a gedcom file to be created from data in Microsoft Excel or a database program such as Microsoft Access, which can export data in the form of delimited text files. This program is freeware and is not supported."

If you find something that works for you, please keep us posted -
