Tour of Family Tree SuperTools
Chapter
12: Sample Custom Screen Layouts
This chapter
presents samples of screen layouts which have been customized as described
in earlier chapters. The layouts are offered in three varieties. Please
select the one which matches your screen resolution:
Also,
please read these common questions about custom screen layouts:
Question
#1: How do I determine my current screen resolution?
Answer:
Right-click on your Windows desktop, choose Properties and then
select the Settings tab. Your screen resolution (or "Desktop
Area") will be noted on that screen.
Question
#2: Can I change my screen resolution?
Answer: Yes,
you probably can but it may depend on your current settings and your particular
equipment. For a discussion of this topic, see Section
[13.4] of the User Techniques section of this guided tour.
Question
#3: What is the best way to view these screen shots?
Answer: First, make sure that you choose the correct set of
screen shots from the chart above based on your current screen resolution.
Also make sure that your browser window is maximized (i.e., full screen).
If you use Internet Explorer, you can also press F11 to enter "Full
Screen mode" which provides an even larger viewing area. Press
F11 again to return to normal mode.
Question
#4: Why is the screen shot still bigger than my screen?
Answer: Even if you have maximized the viewing area in your
browser as described above, you'll find that the images are slightly wider
than that viewing area and it is necessary to scroll to the right to see
the right edge of the image. That's because your browser itself consumes
some screen space. The screen shots were taken in full screen mode and
are provided here without reduction in the interest of accuracy.
Question
#5: They are rather redundant, aren't they?
Answer: In order to facilitate comparisons between screen shots,
they all reflect the data for the same person. We have also deliberately
avoided using Accents and different Windows color schemes in order to
avoid detracting from layout issues which are the subject of this chapter.
Your screens will look much more exciting to you!
Question
#6: What is the easiest way to duplicate one of the layouts that is shown?
Answer: Each screen shot is accompanied by a zipped version
of a layout file (*.lo). You can download that file by clicking on the
screen shot. The layout file contains all of the characteristics of that
layout, including the size and position of each of the windows, the position
of the toolbars, and the size of the application window itself.
Question
#7: How do I use a layout file which I've downloaded or which was sent
to me by another user?
Answer: Unzip the downloaded file into the program folder for
Family Tree SuperTools. Then run the program and you will find it among
the list of available layouts on the Layout toolbar (and View > Layouts
menu). Just select it from the list. You can then save the layout under
a new name using the Layout Manager.
Question
#8: How do I design my own custom screen layout?
Answer: For specific strategies and tips in working with screen
layouts, please read Chapter 13: Designing Screen
Layouts.
Question
#9: Where can I find some more sample screen layouts?
Answer: Click on this
site for a collection of sample screen layouts that have been submitted
by actual users of Family Tree SuperTools. This collection is maintained
by user Bryan Wetton of Adelaide, South Australia.
