  1. In v8, when I added a witness to an event, and selected a person from the picklist via their non-primary name, the non-primary name would be shown in the box on the top right, and thus in the witness screen.

In v9 this does not seem to work the same way anymore, e.g. when I select a person via their married name, their primary name is shown, and I have to change the name manually to the one I want.

Is this a deliberate change in or was it broken in a recent update?

  2. For the focus problem, if you are using the Expanded Picklist, try the Simple Picklist.

Re VCF, are you using the default locations for your data (see Data File Storage in Help) with the new operating system so your data is not in the restricted program files location?

Okay will try the simple picklist, but as the behaviour is erratic may not be able to report if that improves things quickly. Maybe I should mention that when I am using the expanded picklist, it is very slow to jump from one person to the next, i.e. if I enter the beginning of a name is takes a few seconds to jump from one to the next match, and sometimes even jumps back to where I started from. Because of this I usually use F2 to find people.

Re VCF: I have a partitioned harddrive and have TMG installed on the C partition and the data is on the D partition. This is the same way as it was before the re-installation, but I think that on the earlier installation I installed ver 7.00 and then upgraded to ver 7.04, while this time I installed ver 7.04 directly. I use the UK Gold version, and the OS is Win XP. Other reports are created normally, it's just the vcf ones that don't create anything.

  3. If you are losing focus when working from a filtered PE or Picklist, save the filtered list to a Focus Group and use that to change focus.

In Preferences / Current Project Options / Advanced, check that your location settings are correct for the new OS, specifically for your Configuration files and Report output - which include the VCF files.

I am working from a normal picklist so that is not the problem, and the locations in preferences are all pointing to the correct places.

If I re-install TMG is it better to uninstall first or can I install it over the current installation?

  4. At irregular intervals my project loses its focus. It sometimes happens when entering data that the details window shows one person, but the tag entry box shows another. If I don't notice it in time it saves the new information for the wrong person. Usually when the tag entry window closes, I have one person in the top half of the windows (i.e. detail, image, flags, associates), but another person in the bottom half (i.e. siblings and children). It is random and maintenance does not solve it. Today it also showed the same behaviour when I closed the details window and opened it again. In this case it only showed the different person in the details window, but left all the other windows with the original person. I assume that the project is somehow corrupted.

    also

since a recent re-install of everything (OS and all software) I can't create any vcf reports. Vcf is installed, and I can open it and look at previously created reports, but when I want to create a descendant chart for example it lets me select all the options, but when I click on create chart, the report definition screen closes but nothings happens. Can this be resolved without reinstalling tmg.

    Thanks for your help.

  5. Can someone tell me if there is a way to show a duplicate person in an ancestor chart and repeat the ancestors? I'd like to create ancestor charts (usually only 4 generations) for my pedigree goats, and in the animal world they can breed with rather close "relatives" (i.e. half-brother to half-sister). I know I can print a blank chart and enter the names manually or shift the boxes manually and copy the ancestors from where they were first mentioned, but I wonder if there is an easier way of doing it?

  6. On the Person view, the witness memo (if there is one) will be listed before the Memo IF the person is a witness to that tag.

Like heir: John Adams PLACE She was to receive 800 acres of land.; The following is a transcription of that will. I , John Adams...

Yes if the (tag) memo is giving info about the whole event that's fine, where I don't like it is when I have to use the (tag) memo for special information about the principal, because there is nowhere else to put it, like in the example below, there Age 50 ... refers to his mother.

    Like

census: Malcolm MCDONALD, Parish of Glenshiel, Scotland Age 25, Occupation Cooper.; Age 50, Occupation Cotter.

  7. Of course, if you want all linked people treated the same, you could use a History event tag. In that tag there are no Principals, only Witnesses.

    Hope this gives you ideas

Thanks Michael, this solves my first issue. Is there a way to change the "tag group" without having to re-enter all information?

If the tag memo shows up for witnesses, either you have the [M] variable included in the Witnesses Sentences, or you have set the report Options to include Memos that are not in the Sentence. The solution is to take the [M] variable out of the witness sentences and use only the [WM] variable, or turn of the "memo not in sentence" option.

Sorry should have made myself clearer. After reading some of your tips Terry, I may be able to express myself better ...

I have a family who emigrated from Scotland to Australia. The mother Flora is the principal, and her five children plus daughter-in-law are witnesses.

I have used the following sentence structures:

    [P] <|and [PO]> immigrated <[D]> <to [L]> <[M]>

    [W] immigrated with [P1] <and [P2]> <[D]> <to [L]> <[WM]> <[M0]>

In the descendency narrative this gives me the following sentences (1) for mother Flora, (2) for son Malcolm (correctly)

    (1)

She immigrated on 4 October 1849 to Port Phillip, Victoria (She was an Assisted Immigrant on the 'Mahomed

Shah'. Her age was given as 57 years, and she travelled as a widow. She was a Presbyterian, could read, and

her calling was Housekeeper. On arrival she left on own accord to Geelong).

    (2)

He immigrated with Flora MCDONALD on 4 October 1849 to Port Phillip, Victoria, He was an Assisted Immigrant

on the 'Mahomed Shah'. His age was given as 35 years. He was a Presbyterian, and his calling was

Agricultural Labourer. He could read and write and on arrival left on his own accord to Geelong.

In the Family Group sheet, however, the output is the following:

    (1)

Immigratn* 4 Oct 1849 Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia (She was an Assisted Immigrant on

the 'Mahomed Shah'. Her age was given as 57 years, and she travelled as a widow. She was a Presbyterian,

could read, and her calling was Housekeeper. On arrival she left on her own accord to Geelong).

    (2)

Immigratn: 4 Oct 1849 (w); Flora MCVICKER (20); Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia; He was

an Assisted Immigrant on the 'Mahomed Shah'. His age was given as 35 years. He was a Presbyterian, and his

calling was Agricultural Labourer. He could read and write and on arrival left on his own accord to Geelong

(She was an Assisted Immigrant on the 'Mahomed Shah'. Her age was given as 57 years, and she travelled as a

widow. She was a Presbyterian, could read, and her calling was Housekeeper. On arrival she left on her own

    accord to Geelong).

The same is appearing in the person view of the details window. Is there a way that I configure these tags

so that only the memo relevant to the particular person appears (i.e. in this case the son Malcolm)?

    Marianne

  8. I've just started using the witness feature and have a couple of questions:

    1) Is it possible to get all participants (i.e. principal and witnesses) on an equal level? I would like the event highlighted in both the principal and the witnesses' person view, when there is no reason for one person being "superior" to the others.

    2) I have started to use the witnessed events for census and immigration, and previously used the memo for extra information such as age and occupation. I would like to have a memo which only applies to the principal, just like I can enter memos for each of the witnesses. If I use the tag memo it shows up with all the witnesses as well, and if I exclude it (--) then I haven't got a way to give the principal a memo. Any suggestions of how to solve this?

    Thanks, Marianne

  9. Bug #1

    Research Task Log

When trying to add a new task, the research task screen comes up with the comment of the last selected task, rather than with an empty comment box. The task name is blank as it should be.

    Bug #2

    Research Task

While the bold/italic formatting is honored on the research task screen it still shows the code on the preview screen in the Research Task Log. And that is the place I would like to read the contents with ease.

    Bug #3

When I edit any of the tasks (other than the one on the top of the list) and return to the Research Log, the last task on the list forms the first line of the list, and you have to scroll up to see the other tasks. It should automatically show all the tasks.

Hope these issues can be fixed in the next release

  10. Judy, in both descendant chart and ancestor charts you can determine what information appears in each box. In the descendant chart, by default the marriage tags are in the spouses box, but you can put the marriage tag in the focus person's box as well. In the ancestors chart the marriage tag is in the male ancestors box, but you could put it into the female ancestor's as well.

Go to the report you want to create, then go to options, then to data types. Click on focus person, and you will see what tags and in which format they are defined. There you can add the marriage tag. However, with multiple marriages, the focus person will only have one marriage date, in the one I tested it was the first marriage.

    Hope this helps.

  11. I have two items on my wishlist:

I would like an editing history, where it shows what I have done to a person's record on a particular day. Something like a report list of ... editing history, that lists the things I have done, i.e added child, entered census, etc.

The other thing I would like is that when I add a spouse or parents to a person who is obviously deceased, that this new person's flag is automatically switched to N. I don't think that there is a filter anywhere that I can run, given that there are no dates for these people??

  12. This does not happen to me. Exported jpg charts look as good as the VCF original. What program are you using to view your exported jpg charts?

Some viewing programs do strange things. If I embed any jpg file in an AOL e-mail message, I do loose resolution and the reciever observes pixelation. The same file sent as an attachment looks perfect to the receiver.

    Best wishes,

    Mike Talbot

    Hi Mike,

I was using it in Adobe InDesign. Found a way around it by printing the chart to High Quality PDF, then open the pdf in Photoshop where I can specify the resolution, and then save it as a jpg.

    Marianne

  13. Hi,

I would like to use VCF Descendant Box Charts in a book (not necessarily with boxes around the data). However, the export to .jpg options are limited, i.e. the resolution is way too low for the chart to be able to be used in such a manner, so the fonts are pixelated in the exported image.

Is there any way to export a better quality chart? Or can someone recommend a way around it?

    Thanks,

    Marianne
