  1. To find printable area, open Family TreeMaker. Yes, everybody has a copy of that in the closet. Set the margins to 0,0,0,0. Windows will reset to maximum printable dimensions. This might also work in TMG, but I have some memories of my early experiments with Journal Reports, in which printer margin and resizing settings in TMG 5.15 were not necessarily within my control. 2. External Exhibits and paths

Ken- Sorry about changing your topic about modifying paths of TMG jpeg exhibits to a topic about embedding Captions/Comments/References, etc in those same jpeg external exhibits. As to 3rd party Photo Editors, we have to create those jpegs somewhere, unless we scan them directly into TMG using its internal editor. And you can be sure that if there are any problems in that area, the TMG developers will be the first to remind us of "third party, third party" deniability. But back to embedding Captions, etc. It appears that Irfanview has indeed used the open source licensed "Adobe Photoshop 3 compatible" IPTC template to embed its data fields in jpegs and perhaps tiffs and other image files. It looks good, and it looks simple to us non programmers. Adobe gets the first page in the jpeg file and Microsoft gets the second page. Most of the data and keywords seem readable as text (in the language of the user's choice). Now all that is left for TMG is to find those data fields in the jpegs, whether created in Adobe (all operating systems) open source licensed . . . .or Microsoft XP (or later) operating system FIELDS and give the TMG user the option of copying them directly into TMG exhibit fields. Note: Irfanview IPTC editing seems to work fine, but no sorting capability on IPTC fields exists at this time. A web search indicates that other 3rd party Photo Album software companies are also trying to catch up with the sorting problems. No doubt Pathwiz will too. At least that's what I think I read. 3. Cut Marks

Neglected to mention that this faint line problem pops up frequently on AutoCad and other cad software forums, and is apparenly caused by Windows printing a line only one pixel wide. May not be worth the bother to try to fix it. John M.
  4. External Exhibits and paths

Speaking of exhibit-related features, why does this board exist? <g> The TMG-L listers are going hot and heavy with Albums and Exhibit Log wishlists, but nary a word over here. FWIW, the subject matter intrigued me, and I went around in circles checking on the above mentioned Pathwiz, the external CSV file structure of the *.ab3 Album included in my 1999 version of PhotImpact 6, the internal jpeg caption/comment fields in the Windows XP operating system Explorer, and Microsoft's Picture It! 10 Image Editor. Seems that Microsoft uses a few comment fields in XP Explorer thumbs viewer, and a few more in their Picture It! 10 Album. They reverse a couple of the headers on the fields, but the data still ends up embedded in the jpeg files and is readable in both places.. But it seems that the rest of the Photo Editor community may be doing an end run around this MS embedded system, and that newer versions of expensive PhotoShop 7 and CS down to free Irfanview, are embedding data fields in International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) format. Note: That MS and IPTC do not seem to step on each other's toes with the embedding, and that meither intentionally overwrites Camera manufacturers' EXIF data without your permission. (Your mileage may vary). If you want to give the IPTC data embedding a try on the cheap, while waiting on that TMG Exhibit Log upgrade, and keep your existing Photo Editing software linked as well, try an Irfanware download. 5. Cut Marks

Same experience with a Konica Minolta 1350W Laser printer earlier - whoa - Let me take another look with two pairs of glasses in series. The cut-lines are there! The cut lines were very obvious on a PDF995 file in Adobe Reader, zoomed in. John M.
  6. TMG V6.04

This is a reach, but is the capacity of the new hard drive greater than 32 gigabytes? Did you use any proprietery utilities other than those available in Windows XP operating system to partition or expand the hard drive beyond 32 gigabytes?
  7. Fonts Conversion / Wish List

Seems like I am get deja vu on this one. Did I once suggest exporting in RTF format (Not word doc) and trying to change the font there by opening the file as txt? Seems like I though only one font substitution at the beginning of the RTF file might do what you ask. But are you also saying that after the font change in Word, that Word cannot be forced to create a new index?
  8. TMG V6.04

What kind of drive did you transfer the data to? An additional hard drive or some other type of removable drive?
  9. Change page print order?

Using an Desktop Inkjet Epson C82 Printer Driver (Ink long ago clogged and dried, not connected to any port) it was possible to create a "User Defined" 8 1/2" x44" Portrait paper size in TMG. Now this is the max that a little Epson desktop will put out, and it is my understanding that it will only support 32,768 pixels/720 dpi = 44 inches. With a TMG Descendant Box Chart, the page gridlines showed in print preview as long, vertical 8 1/2 inch wide "banners", as desired. It is my understanding that many HP desktop inkjets printers may support 8 1/2" x 55 " printable area on "User Defined" 8 1/2" x 66 inch "banner paper". This translates to 6 undivided 11" sheets of "computer paper" in the real world. The resolution supported is 32.768 pixels/600 dpi = 55 inches, although the HP driver may require 66 inches of paper, and center it accordingly. Disclaimer: Although the Epson driver had previously been set to the above mentioned size, it was necessary for me to cycle back and forth between Control Panel and TMG and turn off a b/w Lazer printer to verify the user defined paper size. Further discaimer: This is, as usual, a vicarious excercise. I quit buying ink when Laser printers hit $99.95. Good luck, John M.
  10. Lost Report Templates

If that doesn't do it, try resorting the files in the rrw folder. I could not find that file until I resorted by name. Maybe Windows can't either. But, if you actually copied and pasted and did not introduce your own typo error, the programmers may have called for the letter *I* in that file name instead of the number *1*. REPORT TEMPLATE RRW\JN-LIP0505.RRW can not be found
  11. Problem with exhibits in reports

FWIW I was poking around in Word 2002 (~XP ) and ran across the following on the Toolbar. Insert>Reference>Caption>AutoCaption (Listbox of Server Apps with checkboxes) May be necessary to checkmark your preferred (Windows associated) Photo Editor for external exhibits??? Lead Main Control *may* be the internal TMG editor??? *May* be FTM??? *May* be both??
  12. Photo's in Journal report

Try saving a problem photo as a bitmap and then re-saving it as a standard jpg in a Photo Editor other than the one you typically use. The TMG Photo Editor can get picky about which files it supports. Perhaps MSWord's Photo Editor is picky also. John M.
  13. Journal report to MS Word

To follow up, vicariously as usual for I have no large databases, a www search of other panel discussions confirms the comments above on MSWord vs. WordPerfect for long documents. That is, most book submissions to Vanity Press publishers, and others of that ilk may be made in MSWord because of its universal distribution, but in house the publishers are still likely to edit with WordPerfect. Submittal of a hard copy printout for reference and settling future disputes is also highly encouraged. The Master Document feature of MSWord is thought by some "experts" to be unreliable at best. Of the few who seemed to "know" about editing long books, WordPerfect was thought to be preferable to MSWord. But MSWord and Wordperfect are not the only available applications for the purpose of publishing. Actual commercial publishing in most instances is done by neither desktop program. Back on topic, other TMG forum users are encouraged to follow Kenny's link to his own fine story of a visit to the home of his ancestors across the Atlantic. John M.
  14. Function keys are AWOL

Have you looked in Control Panel>Keyboard>Speed for options other than a new driver? Have you also looked in Control Panel>Mouse to see if Mouse settings cause an interaction with the Keyboard operation?
  15. Function keys are AWOL

Be careful which operating system files you choose to quarantine with anti-spyware utilities (Adaware?). See if you can restore the most recent batch of files from a quarantine folder. John M.
  16. (The following error was caused by reading the TMG-L list, sort of. ) After reading the latests posts, I went back to try to re-create the one error instance I had encountered in TMG 6.03. This error occurred the first time I opened TMG 6.03 after installation, with the Sample Datrabase only. This error message was caused at 800x600 resolution on an XP SP2 machine in the Siblings window. It did not occur when I first right clicked and left clicked the mouse in the window ttoday, but did occur after stretching the window downward slightly and then clicking right and left and rolling the mouse wheel. Not sure which exact sequence of clicks and rolls caused this error message in the Siblings window, but it is consistent with an error I got soon after first opening TMG 6.03 a few days ago. In the intervening days I installed Right to Left writing capability and added still another language in control panel, but the computer was last booted up in USA Regional settings in English with the Language bar off. John M. Microsoft Visual FoxPro --------------------------- Fatal error: Exception code=C0000005 @ 2005.09.13 03:51:15 PM. 17. It has been a long time since I went looking for the operating system Device Manager to see if there is a big yellow splash indicating an obvious memory conflict between printer and video drivers or other error. Found out on my first Win95 system that it is usually not the MS Mouse that causes the problems that the mouse exposes. Found Device Manager in Control Panel. Didn't see any yellow warnings. Poked around and viewed some memory usage locations here and there, but didn't try to figure them out. Was at first surprised that Game Port memory is so low (high) on the totem pole. Nonetheless, TMG 6.03 hung up on me yesterday with a new dataset that included only a person, a father, a mother, and a spouse. I believe I had just been to Preferences and toggled back and forth between Expanded Picklist and Simple Picklist as a followup to reported problems on TMG-L list. It may be that TMG 6.03 has Alzheimers. Is this really the same version given to Beta Testers? Did they do a clean install? A user only needs to enter four persons to have the program carash? Don't need to sign up to be a beta tester. <g> Any Visual Basic in there? Might check the Microsoft site on the subject of memory leaks. Disclaimer: Not sure exactly where the regional settings were at the time. Right to Left Scripting "stuck" in Memo field in this new dataset, but always seemed to fall back to English/Latin on Sample dataset. Time to delselect my Regional Language that uses Right to Left scripting. Selecting that Language changes my IE6 browser "Find" function too. I don't need to search for diacritics and other things for just English. Maybe the beta testers do need this capability, however. John M.
  18. Fatal Error Siblings window

Call me unobservant, but I had never before noticed that just clicking multiple times (varies with speed) on the Blue Active Window bar on the top would minimize and maximize the active window. No need to use the little boxes in upper right corner. Perhaps the TMG freeze-ups I observed were caused by clicking on the Blue bar in the Sibling window after wheel spinning the names back and forth sideways while thinking they should have gone up and down. Tried with various mouse double click speeds, wheel line ratios, and destructive clicking techniques, but could not repeat the crash. (Other than TMG completely disappearing once, with no backup notice, and not being able to double click on the Desktop icon to get it started again.) But that was a mouse setting problem. It was not even possible to use the Control Panel Mouse Setting Icon with the mouse at that point! For the optical "Microsoft" brand wired mouse was set at highest double click speed. Recommend care in multiple clicking on the Blue active window bar. In fact, don't even single click unnecessarily. John M.
  19. "Lost" Pictures

Is it possible that the files have been transferred by CD-ROM and are marked "Read Only?". These images are not on a Flash Memory drive, or other removable memory, are they?
  20. Coincidentally with the Forum going down, I decided to finally upgrade from TMG 5.15 to 6.03 to play with the problems. The Report Definition Screen font size problem for Journal and other reports at 800x600 pixel resolution on 15-19 inch CRT monitors seems to be caused by too much information in the TMG sub window bounding box. That is, at 800 x600 resolution, which many of us need with our old CRT monitors, it is necessary to turn off All TMG Toolbars as well as the Windows Toolbar at the bottom of the monitor to regain control of the Report Definition Screen at the non-maximized setting so it is readable. Note that the fonts may be unreadably small when the sub window is maximized with a low quality CRT monitor. Solution: Buy a new LCD monitor with higher usable resolution, temporarily turn off all toolbars to generate reports, or , perhaps, move the Windows toolbar to the side. Didn't try that. Hate to try to get it back to the bottom after it accidentally moves to the side on its own. John M.
  21. Teri, Sudden for me, yes, as I finally got around to installing TMG 6 and the 6.03 update today. But it surely is not sudden to all the users who have been steadily commenting on the subject of "too small fonts" on TMG-L (as seen on Rootsweb). It was easy for me to take a pot-shot at this issue, as I cannot comfortably use my 17" CRT at a resolution higher than 800x600. However, I had no trouble reading an MS Access screen at much higher resolution the other day on another person's "Notebook" computer. I guess the merchandisers don't like to call them laptops anymore, because most of them get too hot. One reason for the heat may be lighting up that bright, high resolution screen. John M.
  22. Further experimentation with the Report Definition Screens in TMG 6.03 indicates that on my 17" Cathode Ray Tube monitor at 800x600, the TMG Toolbar can be left in place semi-permanently if only one row of Small Buttons is used. However, it is necessary to temporarily hide the Windows XP Taskbar at the bottom of the screen to gain a few pixels or the sub window screen is unreadable. Hiding and unhiding the Windows Taskbar can be a nuisance when generating reports, but is not that big a deal. FYI, resizing the Screen in the TMG sub windows is sometimes easier if the upper left corner is grabbed with the mouse handle- as opposed to the lower right corner. One user on TMG-L pointed out the existence of the "Clear Type" option in Windows Display Properties (Right click on a blank area of the Desktop, or go through Control Panel.) In my experience with my CRT monitors, the Clear Type option appears to make fonts fuzzier, not sharper. All users by now are probably aware that each monitor may have its own "sweet spot" for best resolution. The newest LCD screens tend to have a higher sweet spot than the older CRT monitors. Flat screen, or other newer CRTs *may* have better clarity at higher resolution than older CRTs. Depends! But it is obvious that the beta testers and developers ignored the small font problem for TMG 6. Once again, the problem is caused by the use of too many rows of text and option buttons on the Report Definition Screen of the Journal Report and certain other reports to display properly in 600 (or less in the real world) vertical pixels. Everybody's mileage may vary.<g> John M.
  23. JackM375 Today, 06:27 AM Post #1 I have tired many times to save a list of people to a PDF file in the reports folder with out success. I have version 6.03 Set the options for Adobe PDF file and even used different names for the saved file i.e. List of People.pdf and Murray.pdf. Neither worked. Anyone else have this problem? Jack Virginia Blakelock Today, 06:46 AM Post #2 Group: Senior Members Posts: 748 Joined: 31-July 04 From: Yellow Springs, Ohio Member No.: 23 Are you using Print and Save? 24. Restore Errors

Last 10 Posts [ In reverse order ] Yoneit Posted Yesterday, 10:03 PM Sigh, today I attempted to restore my backup sqz file from my other computer to my laptop computer. That Dynazip Unzip error would not let me restore my backup file. I really don't know what to do now. I checked for a TMG update and downloaded version 6.03 and that didn't make any difference. Help please! Yours, Yoneit PS this restore function had been working fine for the last couple of weeks so I don't know what happened to change matters. Lorna Henderson Posted 20 Jul 2005, 03:58 PM QUOTE(Barbara Grempler @ 21 Jul 2005, 05:39 AM) Was the backup file on a CD? Copy the file to the hard drive and then restore. Hi Barbara, no, it was on the harddrive. I was merely mentioning it to show she wasn't alone. IF it happens again, I'll take more notes on what the actual error is. Lorna Henderson Posted 18 Jul 2005, 02:02 PM QUOTE(Barbara Grempler @ 19 Jul 2005, 02:56 AM) You don't import a backup SQZ file. The file needs to be RESTORED. (See separate thread about bookmarks disappearing). I ignored it, it continued, and in some trepidation I checked my latest data, and ran VFI, all seeemd fine, so I kept on going, but I'm not all that sure that was the wisest thing to do. I have been keeping the old TMG 4d program for my regular database and updating the v6 program when needed. Anyway this time the error kept coming up whether I used import or restore. In frustration I deleted the database, and it still comes up when I try to import a new database from the .sqz backup. Now what do I do? Yours, Yoneit Chicago, IL Virginia Blakelock Posted 24 Dec 2004, 06:03 PM QUOTE(eadutton @ 24 Dec 2004, 07:58 PM) The attempt to restore a number of projects from .SQZ files written by TMG V5 (and possibly V4) leads to a first error message saying the file is locked and a second message saying DynaZIP UNZIP Error. What must I do to work around this problem and restore the files? A *TMG4.x or earlier* .SQZ file should be Imported not Restored. They are right at the top of the list in Step 2 in the Import Wizard. As far as I know, TMG5 .SQZ files should Restore without a problem. I just restored one made a couple of months ago without incident. Are the files 'Read only' by chance? Rightclick the file, Properties and look at the attributes.
