  1. I'm just learning to enter people and tags so I'm practicing. I've run into two issues which I'm going to need to deal with when I work on my 'real' dataset.

I'm showing relationships, and my brother shows as 'no blood relationship' to me. The relationship calculator identifies him as my brother, but the 'tag' on the detail window says 'no blood relationship'. Why doesn't it show correctly on the Detail window? My sister does!

Second: My brother married a widow with a 3 year old daughter. Daughter's surname name was legally changed when she was 6 to his surname. Then he adopted her some years later. She's entered as a bio dau to her bio mother & father and as 'Ado dau' to my brother. When I try to do a 'Name chg' tag I keep getting Error Messages and then the program freezes. The first error message says 'Unknown member OLELIST'. If I cancel it asks if I want to do a backup, to which I can't answer anything but yes. It goes through the backup process until the very end and I get a new Program Error, 'Alias not found'. If I click ignore I get another error, 'Unknown member ROTOOLBARMAN'. Upon clicking cancel, the program freezes. Control, Alt, Delete brings up the Task Manager and I can end the program.

Hope this is somewhat clear and you can help me put in this tag. Thanks.

  2. I highly recommend the tmg-l mailing list - a very friendly group where the most basic of questions are welcome.  To subscribe:

    Other sources of beginner help:

TMG guided tour (good overview):  http://www.whollygenes.com/tmgtour.htm

Book  'Getting the Most out of The Master Genealogist:  http://www.whollygenes.com/gettingthemost.htm

Check for a users group in your area:

And two *excellent* sites for tips and hints for beginners, compiled by experienced users, for entering data and sources, data sets vs projects, etc.  This is a good place to start.

    Terry Reigel's tmg tips:  http://tmg.reigelridge.com/

    Lee Hoffman's tmgtips page:  http://www.tmgtips.com/

Thank you Virginia. I've been studying Terry's tips and find them really useful. I've also been looking at Lee's site. I have the book "Getting the Most ......", done the guided tour and already found a user group. BUT I didn't know about the Mailing-L. I'm very familiar with the RootsWeb-L lists (I actually moderate one) and will be joining it shortly. The next meeting of the user group isn't until 3rd week in Nov and I have questions now. I just didn't know where to ask them. So the List will be great. Thanks so much.

  3. Is there a particular place to post questions by new users? Or should I just use the TMG v6 Forum? I'm just importing data and beginning to use the program, so feel I have many very basic questions that I'm not sure where to ask. Jim Byram has already helped a lot, but I don't want to be a pest. Thanks :winkkiss:

  4. On the screen of posted topics, can someone tell me what the little black dot on the blue file folder to the left of member name means? There is a legend at the bottom for the different colored folders and symbols, but the black dot is not there. I've twice posted a question in the TMG v.6 Forum and both have the little black dot and no replies. (Well one reply asking for further info, but then the black dot.) Have I been black balled or asked something I shouldn't have? If so, I certainly didn't mean to. I'm trying to import for the first time and keep getting an error message that I don't know what it means. Help!

  5. Jim Byram replied to my first post regarding this problem, but after answering his questions and giving more information, I haven't heard anything else from anyone. I want to get starting using TMG, but am not sure if I've lost any information or not during the import.

After importing my data I'm getting a Windows Error window that says "Program Error" then "Numeric Overflow Data was lost" I have the option to cancel, ignore or ask for help. If I click 'Help', it says that the help file cannot be found. If I click 'ignore' the window goes away and things continue. I might get this error 2 or 3 times and then everything seems fine and the import appears to be complete. Do I need to worry about this? I don't know if I've lost any data or not. Mind you this is a WINDOWS error window, not a TMG error window. I just don't know what it means.

    In answer to Jim's questions:

I'm importing from the Welcome screen and importing a Generations 8.5.1 file with only about 3100 people in it. I have TMG Gold 6.04 with the new update installed. My computer is running Windows XP. I'm a new user of TMG and this is my first import. I've tried it several times (even with a smaller portion of my Generations data) and I get the same Windows error message every time. Sometimes more than once before the import is complete. Does this help? Thanks

  6. Please describe more precisely what you are doing. Importing what? And from Welcome or from File / Import?
