I don't think moving away from Foxpro has been said by WhollyGenes. I remember only that they accepted Unicode as a problem and put it on their Todo-list. But unfortunately, I never have seen a date.

Hi, Probably this has already been handled in another thread, but I did not find it. My question is the following: The address where my father was born in 1918 is: Krugzell, Haus Nr. 12 1/2 around 1935 or 1940 a renumbering of the houses took place and the address was now: Krugzell, Haus Nr. 32 Today, its address is: Wasserschwenden, Haus Nr. 1 This is always the same house that has been built in 1876. How do you handle these address changes referring to the same "physical" location? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have images of several marriage contracts and I want attach them as sources to an event. Which source type is the best to use? It should contain at least the title, issuing administrative unit, place and date. If you adapted another source type please specify some details. Many thanks

Hi, Recently, I have played around with GenBox. Being used to TMG, it sometimes takes a bit of time to find equivalent functions. But it has ttwo things I really would really like to have in the next version of TMG too. 1) Using UNICODE. A big part of Europeans (and a lot of Americans, too) have ancestors outside the English or German speaking world that can be covered with the "standard" ANSI characters. And for those people, UNICODE is a must, not an option. E.g. the Slavic languages like Czech or Polish have characters that are not present in ANSI, e.g. č, ĕ, ň, ř, š, ž, Ł, .... These characters differ also in pronunciation from those without the "decorations". in Czech: s = s š = sh c = ts č = tsh r = r ř = rsh ... As there is no good way to "map" these characters to others with no risk of confusion, it is important to be able to use UNICODE. 2) Charts GenBox has "Everyone Charts". I have long been looking for programs that can output this kind of charts. TMG-charts either show all the ancestors of an individual or all the descendants of an individual. But, e.g. they do not show the siblings of your ggg-grandfather and their descendants or marriages. I know, "Everyone Charts" showing all individuals that are some kind of related to one person (upwards, downwards, across, ..) may be huge. But htey give a much better impression of the complexity / distribution of a family than filtering out everything except the direct lines. Regards Helmut

Hi, It is probably simple but I do not succeed in defining a filter for my problem. I want to create a people's report conatining all persons that either - do not have a death event or - have a death event but no sources attached to it If I select "Death ..." (Tod ...) for the field and "Number of sources" (Anzahl Quellenangaben) for the part, the report does not contain any such records and aftrerwards I can see that the filter definition has changed from "Death ..." to "Witnesses Death ..." (Bezeugt Tod). Can someone tell me how to define this filter?

Hi Ronny, I think you cannot do this by standard tools. You might manually edit the app.ini file of TMG manually when TMG ist nor started. But be sure to make a backup copy of this file before you edit it. You can find it in "C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\The Master Genealogist v7\" Extract of its content: [Database] Prefix= project1=c:\mnt\e\Ahnen\TMG\V7\Projects\Leininger__.PJC project2=c:\mnt\e\Ahnen\TMG\V7\Projects\Straka__.PJC project3=c:\Eigene Dateien\The Master Genealogist v7\Projects\Sample\sample__.pjc project4= project5= project6= project7= project8= project9= LastUsed=c:\mnt\e\Ahnen\TMG\V7\Projects\Leininger__.PJC project10= LastRPB= In this example project1, project2 and project3 are shown as recently used. I took a look at GRAMPS last night and I like what I see. Has anyone had experience using it in full production? Hi, I do not really use Gramps because I am still a windows user. I tried it (version 3.2) just for interest for a quick and dirty little research for ancestors of my sister-in-law (and because it can handle Unicode). So, I used only very basic features like entering individuals' dates, relations, marriages etc. But still in this simple case, I miss some basic features of TMG (and others) that cause me not to use Gramps for my main project(s). - There is no view like the "details window" where I can see all the events for an individual (i.e. birth, baptism, death, children, marriage ...) - the "married name" is not generated automatically (ok, I could live with that) - You may enter alternate names and married names for individuals, but you do not see them in the person window (what you can in the project-explorer window of TMG). So, it is difficult to search by an alternate name or to see the connections/relations) - Nothing to see witnesses etc. in simple way (as I do in TMG when opening an event, not to talk about the Associates window) - Even if I do not use them extensively, the capabilities of customizing reports as in TMG. ...

Earl, the difference in size depends much on what is included in the backup. If you have many already "packed" files (such as .jpg images) the gain will probably be less compared to configurations with mainly "text" (or text processor) files.

Hi, You may have an "Automatic relation" tag in the Person view that shows the relationship with a target person. Is it possible to include this tag in reports? Regards Helmut

Hi, I have TMG 7.04. I created a new project with the same settings as an existing one (to be strict I created it by copying a person from an existing project). I have several external exhibits attached to events like births or marriages, no sources yet. Now, when I run file Maintenance / Integrity check TMg does not ask to chek the external exhibits nor does it find a problem when an exhibit is missing. I have nevr seen this problem in the "old" project where I have the exhibits attached to soiurces. Is this normal behaviour?

Tom, I created a new element type "Partnership" derived from marriage with modified sentences. I don't know if this is the best way but it fits to my needs.

You may find tmg2gramps (http://www.cohsoft.com.au/tmg2gramps/) that transfers some data from TMG to gramps. It does not transfer everything, just what the author needed for his requirements. I tried it once from TMG V7 and did not succeed (but I did not try too hard). The second point is if gramps meets your requirements. If you trust the description, it is quite powerful. Here is my personal experience (I tried because I was looking for UFT/Unicode support): I tried to enter some basic data (individuals, families, some marriages, ...). No problem with the birth date of individuals. My probelms began when I tried to enter a marriage between two persons. I could easily create the marriage event, but I had difficulties to "connect" this event to the individuals. Gramps identifies everything by numbers which is ok (and every program has to do this), but the only way I have found to attach the event to a person was by its number. The same for places. In TMG, if you enter a place information for an event etc., TMG looks if the same place exists already and uses it (or by optimizing thd database TMG will do it). Gramps always creates a new place unless enter its ID (number) in the event. I did not succeed in creating something like the detail person view in TMG where you see an individuals "life", i.e. birth, marriages, children, death, other events. So I gave up after two or three days. I also tried (just for interest) running TMG in wine, but besides the speed it has a lot of restrictions that do not work. Probably, the best thing (if you want to stay with TMG) would be to run it in a virtual Windows Environment (such as VMware, Xen, ...). However, I think you should try gramps first with some people (probably not more than 50) and events, sources, exhibits etc. to see if it meets your requirements and you can get familiar with its terminology and philosophy. This decision (Gramps does what you want and it does it in a way you are going to accept/get used to) is more important than how to import data. Importing data is "just" time consuming work. But if you cannot get used to gramps, the best import feature won't help you to have fun with it.

Hi, I am not sure if there is an easy way. You may run a report of relatives, but this includes also non-blood relatives (i. spouses, relatives of spouses ...). I myself, when adding an individual, set a flag that tells me if it is - direct ancestor - blood-related - "just" related - not related This helps me using accents for different kinds of relationships or create several reports.

Hi, 1) If you have a backup you could restore it. Of course, in this case you will lose the data entered after the backup. 2) I had nearly the same problem some tiime ago. I conatacted the support group at support@whollygenes.com. They helped me to repair a damaged database so that I did not loose any data. Regards Helmut

Verifying the project does not find any errors.

Hi, I am having the same problem (which was not present in V6): When TMG checks for an update (whatever the period may be) it closes after the check and has to be restarted manually.
