UNICODE has long been on the wishlist and Wholly Genes has said several times that unicode will be supported when Microsoft supports it in the development environment. That's a pity because as far as I know, Microsoft has stated that Visual Foxpro will maybe supported until 2013 "as is" but not to beenhanced with new features.

Hi,
Recently, I have played around with GenBox. Being used to TMG, it sometimes takes a bit of time to find equivalent functions. But it has ttwo things I really would really like to have in the next version of TMG too.
1) Using UNICODE.
A big part of Europeans (and a lot of Americans, too) have ancestors outside the English or German speaking world that can be covered with the "standard" ANSI characters. And for those people, UNICODE is a must, not an option. E.g. the Slavic languages like Czech or Polish have characters that are not present in ANSI, e.g. č, ĕ, ň, ř, š, ž, Ł, .... These characters differ also in pronunciation from those without the "decorations".
in Czech:
s = s
š = sh
c = ts
č = tsh
r = r
ř = rsh
...
As there is no good way to "map" these characters to others with no risk of confusion, it is important to be able to use UNICODE.
2) Charts
GenBox has "Everyone Charts". I have long been looking for programs that can output this kind of charts.
TMG-charts either show all the ancestors of an individual or all the descendants of an individual. But, e.g. they do not show the siblings of your ggg-grandfather and their descendants or marriages.
I know, "Everyone Charts" showing all individuals that are some kind of related to one person (upwards, downwards, across, ..) may be huge. But htey give a much better impression of the complexity / distribution of a family than filtering out everything except the direct lines.

MelvinI have had an issue updating flags but only after a pretty heavy session. I normally run Optimize and then "Validate File Integrity" (for good measure) which solves my issues. Don't know if your issue is related but it may be worth trying.
Melvin,
I have a similar behaviour relatively often. I do not think it takes a minute, but it is tiresome. Unfortunately, up to now I could not pin it down to certain flags, number of records with the same flag-content etc.

Ian,This is an exciting development for me. In your TMG/Linux installation have you succeeded in using the report fuinction to print word-processing files? Are you using 32-bit or 64-bit Linux?
When the day comes that TMG & Quicken run perfectly and completely under Linux Microsoft is history for me.
Thanks.

Hi formerprof,
I tried it using Ubunti and wine 0.9.59 and TMG7. It seems to work well if you follow the HOWTO in
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?...n&iId=10500
Without his procedure, I had a lot of troubles.

2006.03.07, 11:41:57 31Invalid subscript reference. 55 LSTPLACEHi,
I had the same message recently using TMG 7.1. With some effort I could trace it down to this:
in some of my places where I could not read the original, I had entered something like "Abcd[...]ghij". eliminating the brackets made the problem disappear.

Rather than contending anything, we just need to move to a Microsoft umbrella that does support Unicode. If only somebody in TMG still had our Visual Foxpro license numbers. Then, this wouldn't have to hit us like a Hurricane Katrina that they knew for 50 years that New Orleans was vulnerable, but did nothing to dike it up, or move the people inland.» I have in my Tree a cousin who was born in England, but died in Turkey during the first world war.
» I also have a Vietnamese acquaintance who moved to the Czech Republic, married a Czech lady, before coming to Canada. He's important enough for me to put in my Tree.
» I have a Turkish acquaintance who came to Canada and married a lady in Ontario who came from China.
» A number of ancestors on my mother's side moved to Kansas, where there is a colony of people who appear on the US census with their Czech names fully accented in Czech style because the census taker was a Czech-American.
» And I'm only one example. We live in a cosmopolitan world, in a time of modern technology and communication. Many of us are interested in recording the details that appear on the records, in all their glorious detail, inconsistencies and accents and all the rest.
» Surely Microsoft can help us to move from the dead-end backwaters of Visual FoxPro, which is known to be heading for extinction, to something where complaints are no longer required.
» Are there any creative thinkers amongst us? Anyone?
I second Mr.Kim.Sanders.
I have several Czech names in my ancestry and I want to use the correct letters.
Allchars is no solution as it only gives a possibility to type/input the 255 "standard" characters in the character set. It does not help for Czech Hačeks, Vietnamese characters ....
The problem for the development team probably is not only the database FoxPro (which probably could be replaced by Microsft-SQL or an OpenSource DB) but the programming interface/tools. This could mean a reprogramming of everything.
But at the end, Microsoft has cancelled the further development of VFP (at least what the integration of UTF concerns) and I think TMG must be aware of this. It is to be hoped, that they are already working on migrating TMG to another database - or users would move to another program that supports UTF.

I played around with this some more and came up with another error. The error above was because I still had TMG v7 database open. Now I am getting the same one I got last night -70 and 01102. Also, last night I got some results to show up but it just had the words: birth, anniversary etc without the person's name to go along with it.Hi,
Did you download the new version (2.1 Build 1) which supports V7?

Is it possible to add new hotkeys, e.g. to add a baptism event?Hallo Helmut,
die einzige Möglichkeit besteht darin, Dir benutzerdefinierte Schaltflächen zu erstellen, die diese Aufgabe übernehmen.
(Add custom toolbar buttons to > Add a tag of a specific type)
Wie Terry schon gesagt hat, geht das über zusätzliche Hot-Keys nicht.
(no additional hot-keys)
Danke. Die Idee ist nicht schlecht, damit kann ich leben.

Hi,
For some tags/events there are keyboard shortcuts to add them.
<Ctrl>+<V> for Name variation
<Ctrl>+<B> for Birth
<Ctrl>+<M> for Marriage
<Ctrl>+<D> for Death
<Ctrl>+<U> for Burial
<Ctrl>+<H> for History.
Is it possible to add new hotkeys, e.g. to add a baptism event?

I guess I too can use that work around, however I would like an answer to why this suddenly started occurring. There must be a fault somewhere or at least a reason as to why it occurs so intermittently. I am of course assuming it is 'operator error' until proven otherwiseHi Ann,
I've reported this to Whollygenes support when using TMG V6. They could not trace it down or resolve it. In my specific case, it "only" happened at the first start of TMG after a PC-reboot. Subsequent starts of TMG never showed this behaviour.
This prolem has also been duscussed in this Thread: http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index...ructure+missing

Hi,
I have the same problem. Configuring TMG to show the welcome window at startup bypasses the problem. Of course, I need one mouseclick more at the beginning to select the project (click on "Letztes Projekt").
I have set tips to yes and check for update every 1 day as changing these options did not help and I like it more than switching them off.

Hi Kenny,
I had the same problem. In my case it resulted from not reading the migration instructions well enough and I did a restore including the exhibits.
If you do not include the exhibits in your save/restore, they remain where they are and are perfectly useable. After that, you may set the default folders in the project properties as you like.

Thank you, Teresa. That did the trick.

Hi,
If possible I would like a little inconvenience to be amended:
If an individual is defined as:
Given name: Joseph
Surname: Kramer
Suffix: junior
Then it is displayed in the Details as "Joseph Kramer junior" which I like.
In the Project Explorer (Sort by "Surname collapsed list") it is displayed as "Joseph junior Kramer" - which in my opinion is misleading and should be the same as in the Details.

I have a family member born in Târgu Mureş, a city in Romania. I have used the windows character map to copy the character and paste it. I have typed it into Word and then copied and pasted it. Every time it still shows as Târgu Mure? If I read the help file correctly, the copy and paste should work, but it does not seem to. How can I get the correct character into the tag?STLSAILOR
Hi,
It seems that you have run into the problem that the database TMG is built upon does not support Unicode or UFT-nn code. There are several threads concerning this problem in this group.

I was not present for the original design discussion, but I've been told that the rule for "after" was based on a discussion with beta testers where they decided that when genealogists say, for example, "he died after 1850" they mean that they have evidence from sometime in 1850 that someone was alive.I am not sure I agree with that reasoning, and either way, I'd prefer that "after 1850" sorted after "after 31 Dec 1850". The solution is to give as specific a date as possible. In the example above, if the other evidence in 1850 was a deed signed on August 6th, the sort date should be "after 6 Aug 1850".
Thanks John and Vera.
I would rather share John's preferences, but at least that is an explanation and I will have to take this into account.

For various reasons, the sort sequence for partial dates work like this:Thanks John.
Could you give some examples for the reasons?

Hi,
I am using TMG 6.12 and have a little problem that is annoying. If for a person I have several events with specific dates, say
- marriage Jan 1st, 1850
- child Nov 13, 1850
and another event "after" the same year, e.g.
- death after 1850
the incomplete date, even if specified "after" shows up as first event of this year. I know, I can do something with the sordt date, but I would expect a date "> 1850" to appear after "Dec 1850".

Thanks, Teresa.
I opened and closed the tag for the persons that I could see during a quick browsing - and it solved the problem for all but one. In the latter case, I opened the main name tag - and there was no sort first name in it. After adding it, the problem disappeared.

Hi,
This is strange. These persons have the marriage-name tag without the first name. But this is the same for all married women - and it works well. Besides that, the concerned persons are in the database since years (and have not been touched recently) and I did never see this problem.
I now tried in one case to add a "sort first name" to the tag: I got an error message that because I did not specify a "first name" it would use the first name both for the first name and the sort first name. Although it did not "really" write the name into the marriage-name tag, now this person sorts correctly.
But it is rather inconvenient to check 3000+ names to see where I should bypass the problem in the abve manner.

Hi,
I just have come across a strange sort ordering in the project explorer. For several people, it does no sort by the name and I was unable to find the reason.
TMG is version 6.12.
The project explorer is set to "group by surname" and sometimes it does not order by the first name (after the surname) this results in the strange order
Irene Leininger
Gerda Leininger
...
Anita Leininger
Barbara Leininger
Bernhard Leininger
....
I have already run
- recreate indexes
- check integrity
- optimize ...
I attach an image of the wrong part of the project explorer. Any help and/or explanation of the phaenomenon will be welcome.

Hi,
Reports do not use the sort order specified for the project.
E.g. the project has German sort order defined
The order in the project explorer follows the usual German sorting
Bock
Böck
Bogner
Bosch
...
Busch
Carl
In the report, the persons appear in the English (ASCII) sort order, i.e.
Bock
Bogner
Bosch
....
Busch
Böck
Carl
It would be nice to have the same sorting in project explorer and reports

Hallo Helmut - Guten Morgen, use the List of People report and define a filter condition like ==> Field: Marriage Group... / Subfield: Role / Operator: =Equal / Value: GROOM / Connect: END.
Then specify the output columns for this report (under: Options... / Tab "Output Columns) you would like to be shown in the report.
Hope that helps.
Vera,
It seems sometimes you have to think the other way round. It works.
Thank you

Hi,
Is there a possibility to create a report of events where the principal poerson is assigned (or not assigned) a specific role?
Example:
For marriages there are also the roles bride and groom (besides the standard principal). I want to have a list of all marriage events where the principal person is assigned to the role "groom", not principal (or vice versa).
Thanks
Helmut

Hi,
I am having the same problem. Unfortunately, there is no solution that fits perfectly.
You may look into the help for "List of People". There is a paragraph dealing with multi-married people. One of the main points here is that you need to introduce a multi-marriage flag.
