  1. Hi Helmut, Guten Morgen :)

which 'detailed report'? You're referring to the lower part of the details window, right?

Why not simply add the 'Children' window to your layout? From this you can see at one glance Birth and Death of the children... (and even more than that).

    Hi Vera,

    1) I have the children window open, but just did not use it that way. Good idea.

    2) In a printed detailed report of an individual you do not see the life-span ( it is very close to the detail window)

    3) In a "Erzählender Bericht" of an individual the children are not mentionned at all !?

    Regards

    Helmut

  2. Hi,

In the details window and the detailed report, for events like Marriage, Son, Daughter, you can see the name and ID of the concerned person, also place, comment etc.

I would also like to see the life-span of the concerned persons (like it is done in the project explorer). Often, this would give a much better impression.

    An example from my researches:

A couple has got 12 children within 14 years. With the exception of one, all had died before their mother when giving birth the twelfth time. Most of the children died when they were less than three years old.

When the lifespans are shown, you get a very good idea of the situation.

  3. Hi,

I think this should be quite easy. In the List People Report you can shoose which fields should be output.

If you want the birth date, you just select Date from the birth-group.

If you just want month and day, you should select two fields from the birth-group: Month and Day

  4. Hi,

with TMG, you can create diagrams for the ancestors or for the descendants or ancestors and descendants of one individual.

I would like to have the possibility to create a diagram containing all individuals (maybe of filtered group). Genbox Family History is able to do this.

    Helmut

  5. BTW "The Check for an Update routine" will always shut down / close TMG automatically. That's normal and valid behavior.

That is true if you trigger a "manual" check for updates from the help menu. TMG terminates, checks and restarts.

I don't think that just terminating TMG in case of an automatic check is a correct/wanted behaviour. At least, it has not been before.

    From your description....

after TMG shuts down / closes you should see another window "Check for Updates to The Master Genealogist" with different options how to procede.

    Don't you get that?

No, there is no other window (at least if no updates have been found) in case of automatic check. There is in case of a manual check.

Trying to re-attach the cofiguration file

Here at last the config. It was a problem of suffixes.

  6. This is discussed in an earlier topic;

    http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index...?showtopic=4606

The message is a valid message but why you might get intermittent occurrence has not been resolved yet. Some changes were made in the code and those changes first appear in v6.10.

The users who tested this found that Virginia's suggestions worked to eliminate the intermittent occurrence. Make two Preferences changes.

Preferences / Program Options / Startup and Exit tab

    1) Unselect the Show Tips and Hints option

    2) Set the 'Check the website for an update every __ days' option to 0 (zero) days.

Thanks, I will try this and eventually send documentation (if it occurs again) to the thread mentioned above.

  7. Hi,

Sometimes, when starting TMG, I get the following error message and TMG aborts:

"Struktur-Version fehlt. Nehmen Sie bitte Kontakt mit dem technischen Kundendienst von Wholly Genes auf." (Structure version is missing. Contact tech support for assistance.)

After restarting TMG again, I get the selection form for the database, then everything seems to work ok.

My installed Software: Windows XP with latest updates, German.

TMG 6.11 (but it happened also with earlier versions of TMG 6).

Is there anything I can do?

    Regards

    Helmut

  8. Hi,

I would like to add the following to the wishlist:

I usually add exhitbits (such as photocopies of church records, their transcription and/or translation ...) to the sources which are referred to by events like birth ...

Now, I would like to have the possibility to attach the same exhibit(s) to the event(s) directly without doing everything again. This would imply also, that when I add an additional exhibit to a source, it would automatically be added to the relevant event(s), too.

I do not know, if this fits into the concept, but it would facilitate finding e.g. the picture of a church record belonging to a birth without the need to create redundancies.

    Best regards

    Helmut

  9. Hi,

I am usually using Individual Detail reports to have a person's data in printed format because I can see or find the information quite easily. Unfortunately, witnesses (for marriages, Godparents for baptizm, midwives for births) are only included in Individual Narrative reports.

I would appreciate an option to include this information (name of the witnesses) also in Individual Detail reports.

    Regards

    Helmut

  10. Neil,

Thanks for the reply, and I guess that would probably do exactly what I needed. I am not comfortable with the restore process because I don't have a full understanding of what happens--hence my reluctance, as I don't want to overwrite something that I don't even know I'm overwriting. (Normally I have no fear about messing around with my computer. Just not my genealogy database!)

Luckily, after posting here I continued poking around on my box and found a utility in Windows XP that I hadn't seen before. It rebooted my computer and then spent a great deal of time messing around with my drive before bringing Windows back up again. Many bad clusters were isolated, and now not only does everything happen & respond at least ten times faster than before, but also all my report definitions came back.

The other reason I posted the question is that I did want to know if one had to reinstall an entire project to get just a few files out. But your response certainly would have addressed my issue. Thanks again.

    Hi,

Alternatively you could open the backup (.sqz file) with winzip or similar and extract the wanted files (.rpt, maybe .xpt ...)1

    Regards

    Helmut

  11. Karla,

Just to put this issue in perspective - it goes back a long way! all the way back to 1998.

Here is a transcript of part of a message that I put on the TMG_UK list of the time:

Strictly, Microsoft has to shoulder most of the blame for the delay. It has been extremely tardy in implementing Unicode string storage in VFP. If you want to understand take a look at the wish list for VFP10 at

    http://fox.wikis.com/wc.dll?Wiki~VFPVersion10WishList

    Hi,

a wishlist shows the user desires. But has Microsoft already agreed the implementation (and given a date) ?

    Regards

    Helmut

  12. I didn't know that TMG was now able to deal with Hebrew or Russian (even if marginally). Does this mean that it now has unicode capability? Can we get the full range of, for instance, Czech and Polish characters? Last I checked that wasn't possible.

    Karla Huebner

    Hi Karla,

The situation is still the same. Unicode is not supported due to the restrictions of the underlying database. I have the same problem with Czech characters.

    Helmut

  13. Hi,

I have installed TMG v6.09 (in German) and wanted to try the new message manager functions. I ran into the following problems:

    1) When I start the message manager (help/message manager) I get a small window, saying (translated from German "Kann keine Nachrichten empfangen, da keine Internetverbindung gefunden wurde."):

Cannot receive messages because no internet connection was found.

After that, the message manager window opens.

    2) If I got to the Outgoing tab and klick on "Access the company website", my browser (Firefox) opens and tries to access this site:

    http://\\www.whollygenes.com/

    Of course, it fails.

My internet connection is XDSL, accessible any time (Check for updates works without problem).

    Any help is welcome.

    Regards

    Helmut

  14. I would like to do the following and up to now I have not succeeded:

I have (scanned) documents that give information to more than one event, i.e. a lot of them is combined record for birth and baptizing or contains birth dates of more family members. I want to create an (general?) exhibit for each of these documents and then link this exhibit to several events (i.e. birth and baptism).

    Is this possible?

Up to now I could only create separate exhibits (referring to the same file) for each event.

    Regards

    Helmut
