  1. "cannot quit visual FoxPro" MESSAGE

I found this message via search for "cannot quit visual fox pro" In similar circumstances I had my new Netbook freeze with this message when I tried to close down TMG UK 7.04 last night. Alt control and delete did not work either, because in closing TMG it returns one to the exit screen -so I switched off. I had the computer freeze twice but the second time was not with TMG it was with the computer help file - although I think TMG was still open. And again refused to close. I shall report this to tech help, but should add that I have not had it happen before on the four or five previous occasions when I have opened and navigated TMG UK 7 on this new Netbook. Like you I was trying out a new Netbook. In fact I was not actually "using" TMG. I had TMG open because I was teaching myself to use the touch pad mouse on my new computer - and my mishandling the mouse and also having a USB mouse plugged in without disabling the touch pad, could have spelled trouble. When one buys a lap top or netbook there are countless little tasks that the computer sets itself. For instance, I use it without internet contact. So the lap top busies itself by looking for internet contact to update its security - which is perfectly valid. Another difference between TMG on my desk top and the net book is that at home I dont show the Project explorer in my layout. But the extra width of the netbook, offered this as a possibilty and JIm's lay out brought the person details screen to the centre, which I liked. Yet another difference between my desk top and lap top is that the default for windows xp on the new computer is like html with a back arrow leading to where you were before. I hope your problem got solved. Evelyn
  2. Custom Toolbar

My difficulty with custom and UK tags reported as "not found" when accessed from a custom tool bar has some similarities and is still in the hands of tech help. It was previously discussed as buttons not sticking, but my impression was that it only affected custom and UK census tags. I use Windows xp. Evelyn
  3. I have made a descendents box chart with no boxes as per the example on Wholly Genes site. The boxes do not show up but I have lots of dots showing on the print out. As if from the grid. What are they and how do I get rid of them? There are no dots for the new boxes I created to hold text within vcf. I have done a great deal of work editing this chart - learning to use vcf - and I do not want to have to go back to TMG.
  4. Blended Chart

With the help of Virginia, Lee, Jim and others on the ROOTSWEB TMG list I have been learning how to use Chart Form for the first time in order to produce my blended tree using TMG. I used a new project and dummy father as described in my previous post, but have not manipulated any birth or marriage dates to position the blended famiies on this tree. I am still not expert at lines - it needs some finishing touches but I am pretty happy. It shows what VCF can do. Evelyn
  5. Uploading images to Forum

Sorry, Virginia I seem useless at finding the Help files. How do I upload my Blended family chart jpg? Does one need to upload the image to a photo hosting site and link a thumb nail via a URL? Evelyn
  6. Thanks so much Virginia. Yes, I created text boxes. No, these are not just ports. Though they might be. They fall on the lines of my "not visible" boxes. They are on the title box too. But I did not have ports checked to show. I looked at that many times and also general properties. I also tried with saved previous versions. I will look for instructions on how to upload my chart image to this board so you can see. Evelyn Later - well, I dont know what happened but when I saved the chart as a new version (the fifth) and opened that to reply to you, the View Port box was checked and when I unchecked it, the marks disappeared. It must have been a fleeting bug and spontaneously sorted itself? I owe you so much Virginia. It looks as if I shall manage this vcf after all. Evelyn
  7. I have spent a morning learning to edit in vcf. My boxes and notes are now arranged pretty much as I want them. But I cant draw lines. Or understand the Help on drawing lines. If I start to draw a line I cannot stop drawing it. I understand that the lines are L shape. (via Terry's site) However, if I add new L shape lines I dont understand how to control their position. Mine tend to reposition themselves above instead of below a married couple. In moving boxes to compress the chart, I failed to hold down the shift key. I now have some duplicate lines and some lines missing altogether. I'd like to line up lines with bumps in them so they are single straight lines linking siblings. I'd like to extend these lines to other sibblings. I'd like to add little drop lines and rising lines to connect siblings to the lines going across. Could someone please tutor me in drawing lines? Evelyn
  8. Until recently married women in the UK were known for most of their lives by their married surnames. I want to add married names to the bottom of the women's boxes - it seems one can add almost any other information to the box. But I dont seem able to find married name on the drop down list.
  9. I have many birth dates which span a two year range e.g. 1824-1825. They are derived from the reported age of an individual on a particular date such as a UK census. What is the best way to handle these dates in a chart? If I want to compact a chart by using life span rather than separate dates, birth dates which are output by TMG with hyphens become confused with the hyphened layout of life life span on a chart.
  10. I am working with the UK edition using a 4 generation Descendant Box Chart to show a blended family. Under Options/ Data type I set descendants to show life span and duplicate people to show life span and duplicate people. The duplicate people part doesn't show up, although it appears to be saved as part of the chart layout. This blended family chart includes two types of duplicate person. A woman who appears as the wife of two different men. Individuals who appear twice because they are involved in or descended from a cousin marriage. I hope someone can help me over this. Evelyn
  11. My TMG projects are all in TMG 7.03 UK on a desk top computer using Windows xp Home. I want to take three projects away with me on my old lap top which runs on Windows 98 and thus still has the UK version of TMG 6.12? One way would be to install TMG 7 on the old computer? Does anyone run TMG7 on windows 98? Another would be to save a back up of my TMG 7 projects and restore that back up in TMG version 6. As a trial, I have restored a TMG7 UK .sqz back up file to TMG 6.12 UK, opting to restore the Project plus all customisations. There was a warning message that the back up was from a later version and could not be restored. But none the less, the import continued and opened. It seems OK and all my new data is there. While I am away with my lap top, I'd like to continue tidying up projects, mainly sources. Is there any reason why this cant be done in version 6 and then be backed up and restored (anew) to TMG 7? I'd welcome expert advice. Both on operating systems and on shifting Projects backwards and forwards between different versions of TMG. E Wilcock
  12. I have this identical problem. I created a new data set and entered into it 16 people who might possibly be linked to my main data set tree. The new data set is set via the data set manager to use UK name and place styles. There is no place to alter place styles on the Add new person screen. I am collecting UK census entries using UK version census tags for each of these people and entering the address. The tag entry screen shows UK place style but the address field names are greyed out. When I OK to save the entry the program produces opens an edit Place style screen. This does not show the UK place style. It asks me to create a new place style. Sometimes if I do this and call it UK place style, I am informed that the same place already has UK style and asked to cancel. And TMG seems to create a new place style each time I add a census tag. Deleting these extra (unused) place styles makes no difference. My main original data set still handles the tags correctly. But the new data set is driving me mad. I recently reinstalled a new download of TMG to overcome problems with this project when adding significant numbers of new people. And maintenance and re indexing shows no errors. This is the first time I have used more than one data set in a project and it may be that the UK version cannot manage this? Please someone help me over this. E Wilcock
