  1. I'm using windows 10, and the latest version of TMG. When I open TMG the opening screen briefly appears and then vanishes. The TMG icon appears on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and seems to have the choose a project menu, but I cannot open the program. I have tried repairing from the TMG installation to no effect, and also uninstalling and re-installing. Help please.

  2. Changing websites is an increasingly difficult problem and not just in family history. I teach psychology to undergraduate students in my real life and they use web-based materials more and more as the basis for their research, papers etc. It's now common practice in academia to insist that students at least include a "date consulted" with their citations to websites. At least then a reader can make some sort of guess about the currency or otherwise about the material. There are an increasing number of programs that will download the content of websites and enable you to store that material as text or whatever on or offline. That may help, but the outdated information issue is still a difficult one.

  3. For what it's worth I wouldn't renumber anybody. I've found it much more useful to keep the TMG generated number. Although the numbers don't show family relations in a sequential way, what happens when you've got it all sorted and then find someone new who's related to the line? In my family I also have a remarkable lack of creativity with given names - 29 Richards, 22 Edwards, and Marthas too numerous to mention, etc, many of who are alive at the same time. I've found it very useful with census entries, BMD certificates etc to edit the scanned images and put a title on the image which incorporates the name and the unique ID number. The file is then saved with the name and ID as part of the title, which makes finding them again a whole lot easier.

  4. A few of us have similar problems (in English). Bob Velke and the team are investigating. It's probably not an easy fix - early posts on TMG-L seemed to show very little pattern as to why it might be happening. I have TMG on two machines and Messenger works on one and not the other! One has Norton firewall and things (and doesn't work), the other has McAfee and does . . . both are always connected broadband.

  5. I first create a custom tag - e.g. Tolley family photo. Within that tag I create a new role "Photographed with"

Then go to a person who appears in the photo (I usually pick someone who is central) and attach the Tolley Family photo tag to that person. I add date and location details in the appropriate place fields and other bits and pieces in memo field, and citation details as appropriate. Then go to exhibit log icon and attach the image file.

Then go to the witness tab and add another person who appears in the photo. I change the role from the default "witness" to "Photographed with". And that's that. If you go to PV of the second person the tag shows up as Tolley Family photograph and the Name/Place displays as Photographed with; central person; and opening that witness tag allows you to open the exhibit log for the photo.

  6. I used to get this problem with 6.03, UK but it's gone away with 6.04.

I thought at one time it was due to "heavy handedness" with my graphic pen (which I use instead of a mouse), and certainly I've occasionally reproduced a similar effect with a too slow or too quick, double-click with a mouse button. If it's related to that issue then an upgraded or different mouse driver might help - I recall a few other problems on the list associated with that type of issue.
