  1. UPDATE

I tried going through the process several times today. I finally searched in the "all programs" box and 4 "The master genenealogst" entries showed up. When I got the message these are shortcuts that do not lead anywhere, after checking that, I deleted them.

My next move was to check TMG on a computer that is temporarily stored here. TMG on that had the help file showing. I copied the tmgsetup to my computer. When I ran it it came up with modify or repair. I clicked repair and now I am back to normal.

  2. I had tried both default and custom with same result. I uninstalled again and downloaded today the 30 day trial version. This time it asked me whether I wanted to modify or repair? I tried modify and it said it was installing TMG v8. The result was the same no help files.

Virginia I clicked on the Acces files and no luck.

  3. Jim as it went from bad to worse I uninstalled according to your instructions and reinstalled. I still had no help files although my data was able to be viewed. I uninstalled and reinstalled again with the same result. I searched for a *.chm file and found none.

When I run TMG it flashes a screen quickly, which I think is recreating indexes. It then opens on the Welcome Screen and the only project I can open is the sample project. I can then close it and go to my project. There is no help file.

    TMG v8.0 Win 7

PS I could not follow the instructions to read the help file for obvious reasons.

  4. Virginia,

I tried resetting the margins, the result is still the same. Hadn't noticed the settings before.

What I meant was that the group sheet is normal although hard left. When I print preview it is as though it is showing the outline offset to the FGS. Things seem to have got worse with my TMG and I think that will need to be fixed first.

I wanted the group sheets to finish a powerpoint to show the capabilities of TMG.

  5. Jim I deleted the folder and I am still do not have the help files. It starts and out and looks as though things are happening and then opens on the welcome page. The only project I can open is the Sample. It has no help file either.

I am wondering if I should delete it and download the trial and hopefully everything will start OK.

  6. Virginia thank you. I have now accented the names. I have struck a problem printing the reports. I will start a new topic.

Jim thank you also. Before I do what you suggest I want to confirm that you mean to confirm delete the folder C:ProgramDataTheMasterGenealogistv8? There is also a The Master Genealogist v8 Installer there as well.Delete that as well?

    Thanks

  8. The full message is "the operating syste failed to register an OCX used by TMG. You need to exit the program and run TMG once as administrator (right click on the program shortcut and select "Run as administrator"}. After TMG has been started once running as administrator, you can exitand, thereafter, can run the program normally. "

I have done this. I had to put in my serial number and still I get the above message. I have tried restarting as well.

    What should I do next?

    Using TMG 8.04 and win7

I have only just uninstalled TMGV7.

    Grateful for any help.

  9. In TMG 8 in the VFI log I get the message :- 41 exhibit files were checked, 4 exhibit files not found.

I think this is a carryover from something I did with the exhibits so long ago I cannot remember what I did.Yesterday I had five missing exhibits only one of which had a frowny face, which I was able to correct.

I want to stop these 4 redundant messages appearing in the log.I have used the exhibit log to check that the paths to the exhibits are correct forTMG8. The files that these four refer to have their correct files showing. The redundant files are not on my computer. I have checked all files.

    Thanks for your help

  10. I don't think there is a 12 marker mitochondrial test . Mitochondrial testing is run on hypervariable regions 1, 2, & 3 (HVR1, HVR2, & HVR3). The test reports the differences from the Cambridge Reference Sequence. You enter the marker and difference in the mtDNA table for each of the HV Regions.

Activate the DNA Log click the Add button, in the drop down list for All Labortories choose mitochondrial dna (mtdna) the only choice will be mtDNA, click OK

Fill in the table post-395-0-23494100-1326851454_thumb.jpg from your SMGF results post-395-0-69369200-1326850987_thumb.jpg

You can determine which region your differences fall into from the Sorenson Mitochondrial DNA help section http://www.smgf.org/.../locations.jspx

Thank you for replying. I did get as far as the table and then came to "now what.'? I have forgotten all I understood when I had the test done a long time ago. I will study further. At least you have confirmed I was on the right track.

  12. Wholly Genes has nothing to do with the TMG-L mail list. It is a RootsWeb mail list started by TMG users. It is currently administered by Lee Hoffman, a TMG user, and is a user-to-user mail list.

And like Andy said, the mail list was around for many years before Ancestry bought RootsWeb. The list has always been the primary means of communication between TMG users.

It is intereresting to me that Wholly Genes doesn't encourage discussions to direct here.

    Earl

I think Earl that you are confusing the purpose of the Rootsweb list and Wholly Genes Forum. THe Rootsweb list is for TMG users run by TMG Users. The Wholly Genes Forum is a Wholly Genes official forum. It is my understanding from a message from Bob when he set up the forum that it is the official site. He keeps a close eye on it. He looks at the Rootsweb from time to time and is welcome there. It is up to the users of Rootsweb to encourage users to join both. I belong to both and many others do as well. The forum is from the developer and the List is from the users.

I received my copy of the newsletter today. Yes I did see it on the list when it first came out and was able to pass it on to others. I did not get upset about it and in the circumstances I am glad it appeared there. Bob has adequately explained the circumstances that lead to that delay.Seems the newsletter came by carrier pigeon down under.

Have you read the history of Rootsweb? Do a little research and you will read that the people who started it could not possibly support it in later years. It needed a big player to take it on. Yes it is a worry about how control is getting into less and less hands, but we do have a choice whether we play or not.

  13. I haven't an IPad. Can't justify the expense, yet. On Friday I played with an iPad in a computer store. I searched the web for "A Gallery of Websites created with Second Site" http://winters-online.net/ss2websites/ where there are over 350 sites to look at. That will give you an idea on how it would look on an iPad. It would show you why so many of us like Second Site.

If all you want to do was have your database with you, this is the way I would go. Just before yo go researching, create a default site and load onto device. Make notes at the research centre and enter into database at home. Next time regenerate another updated site.

  14. I am now running TMG7 on a Windows7 system.

The problem is when entering data into a tag, the keyboard is not obeying my locale settings (US English).

E.G. - other funny symbols are entered instead of @ or single quote ' ... anyone have any ideas what the issue is?

    Regards,

    Strathglass.

    Hello Strathglass,

I cannot be sure but this sounds lika a problem I had when I started using my new computer. When installing the keyboard I was asked whether I wanted US or UK. I chose UK and then I began seeing what you are seeing. When I changed to US the problem resolved itself apart from the quote mark which appears some time after I have touched it. You are already using US but it must be in those settings probably.

    Regardds
