  1. I agree with Terry & Michael, One of the things I do if I find a new, large family on a census or two is add one child using the census as the source, then add the child as a witness to the census event(s). Next I copy that child with all the relationships and events and sources. Then I go to the new child and change the name, approximate birth year, and sex when needed. I usually do this for new families where I have a couple of census years and a lot of new children. Just copy the child who is most like the one you are adding and delete that new person as a witness for any events they do not belong in. Do it before you add spouse etc or you could get quite a mess... Another way to add the appropriate children as witnesses to an event tag is to use the "Add multiple witnesses from the Picklist" button and then filter the picklist for: "Father* is ID # _____ END" or "Mother* is ID # ______ END". Then just select which of the children should be witnesses on that census...
  2. Book Manager responses

Mike, See attached clip of the Report Preferences Terry refers to. See Help, too: Prompt to Change Last Edited Date When writing reports that change flags, you can choose whether or not to change the Last Edited date. Your choices are: · Never · Always · Ask each time Jan
  3. List of BMD sources

I would suggest an Ahnentafel report which does not print the children for each generation. Also, I disagree the Bibliography will help with Cindy's request. A Bibliography is cumulative and Cindy was asking for which events had a source citation. Make sure you select the properly surety on the General Tab of the Report Options. If you do not use sureties, check "No Threshold" and "Include blank sureties." If you do use sureties, on the Sources tab of the Report Options you have the option of choosing "Show surety" which places the surety in brackets at the end of the endnote.
  4. Pronouns

Daryl, Not sure where you got that sentence from Help or what your problem sentence is. It sound like your problem may be because your sentence has another variable, probably [D], before the variable for [P]. The below is from the Help page titled: Variables (Event Tags) Principals [P] Current Principal, Full name. The first time the variable appears in a paragraph, the full name will be used. During second and subsequent appearances, if the name variable appears before any other variable in a sentence, a pronoun (he/she) will be substituted for the name. You can force the use of the full name by using [P+]. A plus after any name variable cause that form of the name to be printed in full rather than allowing a pronoun to be substituted, e.g., [W+], [PG+]. They may also be used with role name variables, e.g., [R+:Rolename]. So, AFTER the first sentence, if the [P] variable appears BEFORE any other variable, THEN a pronoun will be used. For example: [P] lived <[L]> <in [D]> [P] lived <[L]> <in [D]> He lived in Dighton, Bristol County, Massachusetts in 1850. Whereas the following sentence will always give you the full name: On [D], [P] lived in [L] On June 3, 1850, Alvah Chace lived in Dighton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. If this is not the problem, please post your sentence. Janis Parkison Rodriguez P.S. Another variable will force a he or she: The [RP:%] variable, with the % being the rolename. The variable is not available with the [P], [PO], [P1], or [P2] variables... You can use Principal for the role here. <On [D]> [RP:Principal] lived in [L] On June 3, 1850, he lived in Dighton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
  5. custom tags in List of People report

Provided the dates you are interested in displaying are those on the custom tag, I think a List of Events will work better for your purposes. Tag Type ... Label Equals Last Residence END Should work well. I just ran it on my custom 1880 tag and got 481 events. You can then "print" out all the Last Residence events along with Principal 1 an Principal 2 along with the place data for the tag and the date. Sort it by county or city or whatever with a secondary sort by name, or any combination of columns available. A List of Witnesses will work too, and it will list all witnesses as well as principals. 6. Hi, Glenn! Thanks again for your help setting up TMG on my iMAC. I have broken it, slightly, by upgrading my Vista OS to Windows 7. I am sure it is just a setting in Paralells or reinstalling the text file but the mapped X drive we created so I could place my pictures on the iMAC "side" is not seen by TMG anymore. I upgraded last weekend and haven't had a chance to figure it out. Hopefully this long weekend I'll locate the setting. Jan Rodriguez
  7. Glenn, Finally got back my mapped drives! It was necessary to uninstall the Paralells Tools right down to the regedit entries. When I reinstalled, it mapped the drives. Everything is back where it belongs. It was first necessary to make sure to change the OS from Windows Vista to Windows 7 on the General page of the Configure window. Checking the SmartMount appears to be what maps the drives and that option didn't show until the reinstall after the clean up. The two links that helped were: KB Parallels: "Windows cannot access \\.psf " error message at the attempt to reach Shared Folders http://kb.parallels.com/en/6885 and KB Parallels: Cannot install Parallels Tools http://kb.parallels.com/en/8969 Thanks again for your help!
  8. Unfortunately, reinstalling Parallels Tools did not work. Any more suggestions? Thanks! Jan
  9. Glenn, All my psf files have disappeared on the Windows 7 side! (and I am not being "comic"). Configuration Settings under Parallels are: Shared Folders Pictures /Users/ivakota/Pictures ivakota /Users/ivakota Shared Profiles - enable shared profile with all checked underneath My Genealogy folder is under the Pictures folder. It was mapped as X I was doing backups to Z as psf drive Now neither X nor Z drive even show up on the Win 7 side...
  10. Losing part of abbreviated name

Mike, check out Help - Variables (Name Tags) and Variables (Event Tags) - there is a [POG] variable, along with many others... Jan
  11. Losing part of abbreviated name

Michael Dietz wrote: For instance I have a sentence which terminates with"... relevant to the family of [PF] and [POF]." What I get is "... relevant to the family of Ella and U.". ------ Mike, try the variable [PG] which equals Principal, Given name. [PF] = Principal, First name. U. _is_ his first name... I do not know if there is a [POG], though Jan
  12. Filter Definition for specific Report

Yep, I did! Thanks for clarifying, Michael
  13. Filter Definition for specific Report

I suggest the following filter for the List of People Report: * Death Group... # Tags Equals = 0 OR * Death Group... # Citations Equals = 0 END Note the Primary tag selection on the far right so you only get the person's primary tags. Janis Parkison Rodriguez
  14. Virginia, I successfully copied my project to a folder in the Dropbox folder (which resides in the My Documents folder). I have been using the project in my Dropbox folder since the end of January. I used TMG's Copy Project function, after creating a separate project folder in my dropbox - Dropbox - Genealogy - Projects - ProjectName. All my customizations came over apparently without a hitch. However, I had previously copied button icons and report configurations into that project folder. Only problem is that it cannot sync with the copy of your folder which resides on the internet until you actually close the TMG project and you cannot backup directly to your dropbox with the program open. I backup to my regular backup location and then copy it to my Dropbox - Genealogy - Backups folder. I work on my database on the Netbook and changes I made to my project show up when I open TMG on the other computer, after it syncs the dropbox folders! and vic-versa... I have never tried using TMG on both computer at once, but why would I and I think the license only lets you use it on one computer at a time. Copies of the contents of my dropbox folder reside on both computers, the dropbox site and my iphone via the Dropbox App, of course, so you end up with multiple backups in multiple locations! So far so good... Janis Parkison Rodriguez VP Arlington (VA) RUG P.S. It looks like it might be a good way for multiple folks to collaborate on one project. Not quite sure how well it can work for this as you do not know when the other person might be using the file(s)... Plus, since some of my project settings point to files on my computers outside the dropbox, there could be issues there but someone with more technical knowledge would need to address that!
  15. Slow import from FTM

Jim, Doesn't it matter which version of FTM they are transferring from? I seem to recall seeing somewhere the TMG 7 cannot import via Genbridge from the latest version of FTM, issued after TMG was issued... Jan
  16. While this does not completely diminish the manual labor, it helps some. Locate events by place name using the Master Place list, select the place, then click on the Events button. All of the events at that place come up and you can see the date as well as both principals and the event tag type. Just double-click an event in the right time period and change the place. Close the event and you go back to the event list. Work your way through that way. Whatever events you change the place for disappear from the list. I used this to change my United States of America (Country) fields to British America. (As to the date, I cheated and started at 4 July 1776, unwilling to deal with allthe mess between.) I have used the same tactic for several other place changes including changing County to Parish on a couple stray Louisiana Parishes just now. Caution, the Event LIST will still look like that place is unchanged until you do an optimize I believe.
  17. After crash cant open project

Peter, I know this won't help now, but I had a similar situation about a month ago. My 4 1/2 year old laptop shut down without notice when I was running on battery. I had TMG open at the time and could not open it afterwards. My backup was a couple days old. Fortunately, about 3 months ago I started using BackBlaze. It is set to continuous. I was able to copy all the project files from the mirror folder on BackBlaze and only lost a couple hours work. Jan
  18. Preferences - Display Surname in Caps

Terry's recommendation to import it into an existing project can still give you a ne project. Import the GEDCOM into the existing project which has the setting you want. Copy the project. In the old project, delete the new dataset created by the import. In the new copied project, delete the old datasets leaving just the new imported GEDCOM.
  19. Filter Help

Ben, I suggest using the filters from the below meeting presentation I gave to the Arlington RUG http://www.rootsusers.org/ and later updated. *May 13, 2006 1880 Census Candidates Using Flags and Book Manager, by Janis Rodriguez http://www.rootsusers.org/downloads/200605...guez-census.pdf Two other filter presentations handouts are on the RUG's downloads page under Meeting Presentations. *May 13, 2006 Filter Basics, Rev2, by Janis Rodriguez *May 13, 2006 Favorite Filters, Rev3, by Janis Rodriguez The Favorite Filters handout was a big hit and many ended up in the sample filters which come with TMG 7. After Bob asked to use them, the EC decided to make the three filter presentations available to all, not just RUG members. Ordinarily meeting presentations are only available to non-members for a couple months. Hope this helps! Janis P. Rodriguez VP Arlington (VA) RUG
  20. Journal report

Depends on what you want... you could add the [PAR] variable to the principal's birth sentence. Early in my experimentation with sentence variables, I thought, briefly, of making this change globally to the birth tag sentence. Unfortunately, it causes way too much extra verbage, especially in the childrens' sections of reports. Instead I added a role with the [PAR] variable and use the sentence only for direct ancestors... Default Principal = [P] was born <[D]><[L]> BirthPAR = [P] <[PAR],> was born <[D]><[L]>. <[M]> Memo = He was probably born in [L3] as that is where his father was living for the 1830 census. John Lewis Ells was born on 24 Oct 1829 in Bibb County, Georgia. John Lewis Ells, son of Nathaniel Eells and Martha W (--?--), was born 24 October 1829 in Bibb County, Georgia. He was probably born in Macon as that is where his father was living for the 1830 census.
  21. Newbie question about Residence Tag

Roadrunner, In my database, the answer is "It depends." If they are moving with the same city or geographic area (Washington DC area or all around the Eastern Shore of MD/VA, I just use residence tags. However, I use the migration tag when they move any distance and modify the tag sentence, via roles or individual customizations, to vary the verb and/or sentence structure. My father's side migrated westward in various jumps and starts: PA > OH > OH > IA >MO and OH > IN > OH > MO and MA > NH > PA >OH > MI > KS > CA and MA > NY > OH > MI > KS and PA > KY > OH > IL > KS > CA, just to mention a few... Using only "migrated" would get quite monotonous... Regards, Jan
  22. You can do this for the Principals by setting a flag and then running a List of Events. Unfortunately, I do not see a way to run this report for other Witnesses. Run a List of People, choose your Focus Group as the Subject of your report and set the TEMP flag (or a custom flag) to Y using the Secondary Output of the Options window for the LOP. Run a List of Events for people (Principal1 or Principal2) whose TEMP flag equals Y. Include four tag type groups, Birth, Marriage, Death and Burial tag groups or get most events by replacing the Burial tag type group with the Other tag type group… Lastly, limit the events by date. ( Principal1 Temp = Equals Y OR Principal2 Temp = Equals Y ) AND ( Tag Type Group is … Birth OR Tag Type Group is … Marriage OR Tag Type Group is … Death OR Tag Type Group is … Burial ) AND Date – Year > 1909 AND Date – Year < 1929 END Select output columns to print the fields you are interested in and sort on whichever one(s) you want, probably Date and State. 23. Living People Flag

Welcome to TMG! I suggest using John Cardinal's Utility. It is a utility program which helps TMG users make batch changes to their data. John has a much more expansive routine for setting the living flag which considers dates of ancestors and descendants. It is donor ware and a great not so little program! Back up before you use it and always run it first in log only mode to make sure it is making the changes you intend... http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/setliving.htm Regards, Jan
