  1. How to select format for LatLong coding?

In Preferences-Current Project Options-Places I have selected "385742N0450023E" format. This is the format I want to use and have been using this since started to use TMG.

Lately (I think with version 8) when place is opened from Master Place List, format is like "68.103056,27.122222". And the same when adding a Place to a tag.

However, in Master Place listing format is like "385742N0450023E"

Is this a known issue/bug? Or can I set the format to look the same everywhere?

  2. I have solved this so if anybody will have same issue, here is one solution.

Problem: TMG does not support changing web-page (html) character set from iso-8859-1 to utf-8. This will cause in Journal reports finnish characters not to show correctly in utf-8 platform (in my case Apache)

    - Luckilly my hosting service allows controlling directorry based character set changes.

    Solution:

    1. Add ".htaccess" text file to Journal Directory. This will affect currect directory plus sub directories

    2. Add line ”AddCharset ISO-8859-1 .htm” to this .htaccess file

    BR,

    Peter

  3. Hi!

I want to output Journal report in HTML format.

How to change charset from iso-8859-1 to UFT-8?

Can't find a spot in TMG where to do that.

I changed my web hosting service and somehow finnish characters do not show up okey anymore.

(Why did those work before, don't know)

Had same issue with Second Site but got that solved by changing character set to UFT-8.

  4. Thank You Harry! Your effort is appreciated.

I cant tell more than told before. But halt does not happen every time and cant cofirm, if there is certain steps to be done before to get it happen.

I do Reindex, Optimize and validate several times a day. Just to keep TMG running :)

(Have quick buttons in my top menu bar)

  5. Hi,

had this same issue with TMG 7 and now have noticed that same happens with TMG 8 as well.

I keep Project Explorer open in my desktop. Normal sort order "ID Number".

If I filter Explorer f.ex. "Surname Eguals xxxx" I might get like 200 names.

If then I change sort order to "Primary birth date", application halts.

It does not halt every time, but about 2 times out of 5.

Only way out is thru Windows Application control and kill TMG.

    Peter

PS. I someone knows solution, please let me know. Otherwise this is just info for TMG developers.

  6. Thank You once again Michael! Appreciated

Got it to work as well from TMG memo. Did not test from website or Second Site yet but assumingly will work.

Basically this means that I cant decide with [WEB:] tags what to transmit to web browser. TMG is allowing only certain format to pass forward.

There might be a need to check this limitation. There is lots of address shorteners etc available. Those do not follow http://-format.

This way I get it to work, but each address has to be hand edited. Archives plans to build "web link generator" in every page. This will give full source data automatically including short URN-link.

    Peter

  7. National Archives of Finland has published close to 20 M pages of documents in web already.

In order to service researchers better and especially for better documentation, web-links for all documents will be fixed in future. There will be an universal linking method is use. Purpose is to quarantee address (document ID) which will stay correct in forever.

Links will be in format ie. example urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi-fe201208136290

Today this URN will generate web address http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=13386166

ie. if URN is entered to web address of a browser http-address is generated automatically.

Is there a way to format URN in memo field so it would work as WEB-formater does?

    [WEB:]urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi-fe201208136290[:WEB] does not work

  8. Had this same issue with TMG 7 and it shows up quite often.

I have Project Explorer in my desktop.

Lock happens when I filter (like last name is....) first

And then sort the filtered view (like Birth Date)

After that there is no way take control except thru system close TMG and start TMG again.

Cant say this happens every time but 1-2 times out of 5.

    Peter

  9. An Explorer filter used to work in V7, but does not work after changing to V8

When a child is still born or dies before christening I use GivenName = "child" and SEX = "?"

    (if sex is not know)

In my "Audit reports" try to check typos so list should be empty, however now all instances show up in the list.

Filter "SEX = Equals ?" AND "GivenName Does not contain CHILD"

  10. Thank You for the new version. Just installed it today.

Is there somewhere a clear document saying how to upgrade ie. how to change project from 7 to 8.

Probably just opening old project with version 8 was not the right thing to do. At least part of references are copied from old version and part not.

Which reference settings has to be manually checked / corrected?

How about Toolbar? All custom settings were gone? Is it normal or not?

  11. In tag I add widowed person to witness and have a role "widow"

    WIDOW sentence: "He/She widowed < [Y]>< ([RA:Widow]-at age)> when [PF] died."

Outcome in Tag preview is correct, but in Journal report output [M1] is at the end of sentence.

    Hi Peter,

I suspect the simple answer is that the main memo is added because that is the setting on the Journal Options. Check the "Memos" tab of the Report Options and see what the setting is for "Memos that are not included in the sentence." I'll bet it is "Embedded". (Remember that [M] is the same as [M1].)

The simple solution is to make sure that the main memo "is included in the sentence." You do that by adding the special null memo part "<[M0]>" to your Witness sentence (this is Em-Zero).

As a suggestion, to get rid of the "He/She" you might use the Male and Female Witness sentences (which are governed by the SEX flag of the Witness). I use:

Male: [W] became a widower when his wife [PF] died<[D]>.< [WM]><[M0]>

Female: [W] became a widow when her husband [PF] died<[D]>.< [WM]><[M0]>

    Hope this gives you ideas,

    Thank You Michael!

You were very right. Will not make a bet with you :)

Just before asking help I read this [M0] story from TMG Help, but did not get it. I think got it now.

Btw, we do not have He/She in finnish. Just one word which is same for woman and man. In sentence I actually I use first name.

    Peter

  12. Just added "widowed" sentence to death event.

So output in Journal is like "He/She widowed < [Y]>< ([RA:Widow]-at age)> when [PF] died; <[M1]>"

Just dont understand how [M1] gets there?

    What do I do wrong?

    Peter

  13. Hi Peter,

You can enter dates in four different places: the Sort Date field, the Date field, the Memo, and as text in a custom sentence. Each has advantages and disadvantages for sorting, age calculation, and narrative output.

For sorting as you have noted, when entered in the Sort Date field the TMG "before" is exclusive, but the TMG "after" is inclusive. I would enter whatever TMG needs to sort correctly in the Sort Date field. For example, to get the reverse of TMG's built-in meanings, if I wanted "inclusive before" I would enter a Sort Date of "before" the "next" date following, e.g. "before 1772" to sort "inclusive before" 1771. If I wanted "exclusive after" I would enter a Sort Date of "after" the "next" date following, e.g. "after 1772" to sort "exclusive after" 1771.

For the narrative output, I usually enter exactly what I want in the Date field, even if it is an irregular date. So in English I would enter "in 1771 at the latest", or "in 1771 at the earliest". Thus, you could enter whatever is the appropriate Finnish qualifier text directly in the Date field. The problem with irregular text in a Date field is that these dates cannot be used by TMG to calculate Age if your sentence uses an Age variable. If you don't use Age variables, then the date TMG needs for sorting in the Sort Date field and the desired exact text in the Date field will work.

But if you do use Age variables, I would put the same TMG needed date in both the Date field and the Sort Date field so both sorting and age calculation work. Then I would put whatever is the desired narrative text in a split Memo part as Terry suggested. I then would customize the sentence to use that memo part instead of the Date variable, e.g use [M2] instead of [D]. As Terry suggested, I might define a custom role sentence which used the memo part instead of the Date variable, so that most of the time I would use the Date variable in a standard sentence but the memo alternative would be available for such special situations.

Of course, whether or not you use Age variables you could "locally" customize the narrative sentence of this tag to remove the Date variable from that sentence and enter the text of the date with its desired qualifier directly in that sentence. I prefer not to locally customize sentences, so I would not choose that approach, but it will work.

    Hope this gives you ideas,

    Thank You Michael!

Very impressive reply, lt gives a lot to think about.

Looks like there is no simple answer or several pros and cons in all.

Sentence (using memo) could make it perfect from output point of view, but in entering data mode data would look different. Also many tags should be edited.

If I would use irrecular date and enter "the latest 1771" in data field and 1771 is sort field. What do I lose then?

In reports age calculation will not work with after/before anyway, right?

    Peter
