1. Peter,

One solution, assuming you are using narrative output, would be to enter "before 1772" in the Date field, since that would be a regular date, then enter "the latest 1771" in the Memo, then change the Sentence to refer to the Memo instead of the Date field. If you encounter this often, you could create a Role with that Sentence.

Thank You Terry, this option is worth of thinking.

    Peter

  2. In TMG there is a good range of different date modifiers available like circa, after, before etc.

However, several times I have needed "the latest" or "the earliest".

This is due to language (translation) issues. My language is not english.

Also "before" is not inclusive the year like "the latest" is.

Ofcause, if documents say marriage happed "the latest 1771", I could use "before 1772".

That would technically do, however translated language is not good finnish.

    Any ideas my dear colleques?

  3. Peter,

"Direct citation link to source would be perfect. Maybe one day....."

What do you mean? Adding a [CIT:] / [:CIT] code will add a citation to a source.

    John,

    thank you not giving up!

I was not aware that also link to source can be made.

I tested it. Works with Journal reports aswell with SecondSite.

    Thank you once again!

    Peter

  4. Peter,

You might try an inline citation ([CIT:] ... [:CIT]) in the Caption field of the exhibit. As I recall, some users discovered that worked in both TMG and SS.

    John

    John,

thank you for this idea. Need to try. That would cover "legal" part of it.

Direct citation link to source would be perfect. Maybe one day.....

    Peter

  5. Since there is no direct way to link sources to exhibits, one way to handle this is to create a custom tag type in the Other group to document your exhibits. Link each exhibit to a tag to the source with an appropriate citation. If you don't want to output the duplicate exhibits, simply make the tag type sentence '--'.

    Thank you Jim,

I tought I was right not finding "direct" way to do this.

In most cases I have just one primary photo of a person and then direct citation link would be easy.

For "Group Photos" I do exactly as you told. It is also very easy to get all people in photo listed thru wittnesses field.

Works perfect especially with Second Site.

  6. I use the Relation tag to track relationships. As I understand it, this tag is static, so I frequently fresh to update the relationships.

With 110k plus individuals, refreshing the relation tag takes in excess of 15 minutes.

I have a fairly recent PC with dual core CPU and 2 MB RAM.

    Questions:

How much RAM will TMG 7.04 use? If I upgrade to 4 MB RAM, will that speed refresh/reindexing? Would you expect the index time to improve significantly? Can TMG use more than 4 MB - say 6 MB?

TMG appears to use only 1 core. Is there any hope that TMG will be able to take advantage of mutiple cores in future?

Finally, if I had one wish for TMG 8, it would certainly be to abandon Foxpro and move into the 21st century. It is inevitable. I hope you do it in the next release. So many advantages would flow from this decision.

    Thanks,

    JAK

    JAK,

just for a reference. Same level PC with 4 G.

With 26.000 individuals takes about 45-50 sec.

  7. I did some more testing on my Journal Reports and found the following today. I had the box "blanks for missing data" checked. I unchecked that box to simplify the report. The reports now seem to work for everybody. I was able to run an ancestry Journal Report on myself for 16 generations and 5244 persons which took about 10-15 minutes to run. I went back and tried it again with the "blanks for missing data" checked for 1 generation. The program displayed "Calculating text for 12 people" and was 12% complete thirty minutes later. When I unchecked the box the display was almost immediate.

Why does selecting "blanks for missing data" cause the program to freeze for some people. What could be different about the data that would cause that problem.

    Bill,

I had same kind of problems earlier.

In my case I had some corrupted data in event detail field.

Sorry, but it was "Citation detail field".

  9. Peter -

I use the Focus Group almost exclusively and have never had the problem. There does appear to be more opportunity for focus loss when using the linked PE.

    Virginia,

    just wanna let you know.

After this discussion I turned OFF "Link project explorer to other windows".

And have NOT seen this "out of sync" problem anymore. (100's of people and tags added)

So, surely this "out of sync" issue has something to do with this linking.

I will not turn it on again, but it is a feature I liked to use.

  10. I just moved to new PC with Windows 7

Q2. When I make backup from new PC, size of backup file is 3,7 M less (total about 20M) than the file which I imported. Those missing 4 pic explains only 1,1 M.

I am worried here that in installation something went wrong.

    Hi Peter,

As a layperson, I can think of several things that might effect file size (for example, the "repeat" files).

Assuming you still have TMG loaded on your old computer, considered opening the project on both machines. You can compare detailed statistics about both instances of the project at File > Project Summary.

Those with more technical knowledge may have other suggestions. In a pinch, hope the above helps. --GJ

    Gene,

    thank you. Helped a lot.

Data seems to match, only size of backup file is different. Probably does not matter.

    Peter

  11. Peter,

To fix your exhibit paths you have a few choices (at least) :-

    1. Manually as you only have 4 to worry about (right click on the exhibits, properties, load and then find your file)

    2. Validate File Integrity (file, maintenance, vfi). Tick - "Search for missing external exhibits", click on "Specify the folders to search" and add the folders where your missing exhibits are stored. This function is ok if you only have a few exhibits or if you store your exhibits in a small number of folders. Sadly it does not search sub-folders so it has limited use for me.

    3. Buy Pathwiz - which you obvoisly don't need in this case but it does solve the problems of the shortcomings of the VFI search.

    Neil,

I can find the files, no problem. They are in same folder as other exhibits.

However, TMG link to these 4 files is "the old one" (=path is not the same as iI had in old PC).

Validation does not report any problems. Btw validation fixed all other exhibit paths except these 4.

    What have I done.

    - added map.jpg to exhibit folder

    - make an exhibit in TMG

    - Add highlights to the map.jpg. A new file is generated by TMG called map_hl(tmg).jpg and exhibit link is pointing to that new file.

(In my understanding, TMG does not need original map.jpg at all anymore)

    - But now, backup tries to find those originals ie. map.jpg and because there is no link from TMG (at least I can't find it) to this original, I can't fix the path.

Now I am worried about backup warning that these files can't be copied.

    Peter

  12. I just moved to new PC with Windows 7

Installed TMG via backup file. However, path to files is different as before.

    Two questions raised

Q1. Four exhibits (I only use external) can not be found by backup in new installation.

All four are original map.jpg's on which I have added some highlighters. New file names are like map_hl(tmg).jpg's and those can be found and seems to work ok.

Bacause path was changed, somehow TMG is searching originals from original path. I just can't find how to fix those paths.

More important, by short look, I could not find any reporting problems, only warming after backup.

How can I fix this issue ie. fix those original paths?

Q2. When I make backup from new PC, size of backup file is 3,7 M less (total about 20M) than the file which I imported. Those missing 4 pic explains only 1,1 M.

I am worried here that in installation something went wrong.

Is this normal that same data, same backup, same compression, has so big difference or should I reinstall?

Number of people is 24.000 so it is impossible to check by hand.

    Peter

  13. Peter,

Try the List of Events report, with a filter like:

Any Witness... Sentence (local) Is not empty END

That should pick up Principals as well as Witnesses - if not, use Principal1... instead.

Caution - I think if your Project is of any size this could take a long time to run.

    Terry,

    thank you again!

Both "List of..." and "Project Explorer" give close to the same results. But not exact.

I can only find few instances and I cant believe I allready found them all by just coinsidence.

The few I found are a bit strange I need to investigate more deeply into this. There is something to do with sentences with different languages. I had this before and it was a TMG bug.

Example: It does not show any custom sentence in Tag Entry screen. Then I open Sentence window, P1 sentence is wrong, I click Role:P2, Sentence is correct. Then click Role:P1 and now P1 sentence is correct aswell. Click OK to exit. If I go back to Sentence window, P1 sentence is wrong again.

In any case output in Journals and SecondSite seems to come out correct.

I suppose this is not worth of more time. I will keep an eye on this in order to get a pattern.

  14. Once and a while I find tags/events which do not use default sentence ie. sentence field have "something" in it.

I dont know where did those come from, but only can assume that those go back as far as inporting database from UFT some years back.

I tried filter "any event; sentence" or "any event; sentence(default)", but did not get good results.

Is there a way to report or search/filter these tags/events so I could fix them?

    Peter

  15. I get an error while adding a person thru "adding person wndow" f.ex when adding a spouse.

"File 'laplacearr.prg' does not exist. 74 FRMADDPERSON.MVALIDATEPLACES". After I answer "interrupt" I get a window which ask about new Place Style. No will keep places style as it was. However, new Place Style was added.

I have made earlier a Place Style called "Suomi" and have used it years. However, I edited Output Template and some labels some time ago and since then this error has shown up.

Defaul Data Set style is "Suomi"

What can cause this and what should I do?

  16. Hi Peter,

[i assume you mean "only after editing the death tag"?] Yes, I think this has been mentioned before, and is how I understand the "automatic" updating of the Living flag works. My testing has shown that only if you add or edit a death tag will TMG notice and update the Living flag. I agree with you that it would be a nice addition (wish list?) to the merge operation to check whether the merge adds a death tag, and thus automatically update the Living flag, but it does not seem to do that now. Of course, any time you merge into a person it is always a good idea to carefully check and edit that person.

    Mike,

    fully agree.

I was more refering to validation. Just tought it is one of those points which could be checked.

Probably this case does not happen too often and nobody told it before.

Now they can fix it if there is a point big enought

    :)

    Peter

  17. Terry/Jim,

I made test and imported one new data set and then copied few people.

    1. Birth tags etc. where "translated" automatically to finnish ie. in data set 2 those were "Birth" but after copy "Syntymä". All other tags the same. As I said, I only have changed the name of the tag and did not greate new tags

    2. Place style for new places was "US standard" after this process. Even my default is "Suomi" and changed references as Jim told. Not a big issue cause every place have to be checked anyway. see point 3.

    3. Places are more complicated. Those have to be found one by one in order to avoid dublicates.

Difficulty is to find new locations from long "Place Master list"

A great help here would be same kind of serial number as sources have ie. last ones on the list are the new ones.

And also a merge function would help, again the same as sources have

Summary: It is a quick way to add people. However, one needs to be very carefull especially with places.

    Peter

  18. Peter,

When you import the import goes into a new Data Set. Since that Data Set does not exist before the import, it cannot have any custom Tag Types, thus you cannot assign them during import. (The Tag Types, Source Types, Styles, etc. in each Data Set in a Project are totally independent.) You should be able to create your custom Tag Type in that Data Set after the import, then use John Cardinal's TMG Utility to change all the Birth tags to your custom Tag Type.

I do wonder why you use a custom Tag Type instead of simply translating the standard Tag Type?

Again, you can't have custom Place Styles in the new Data Set that is created during the Import process. I'm afraid I can't help with changing them - maybe someone who works with place styles more than I do can help.

I don't believe there is any way to change the place fields used by the import process.

Thanks for the kind words about my site. :)

    Terry,

    thank you!

This just mean that there is a bit more hand work to be done. But now I know what can be done and what not.

And my tags are translations only, not new tags. Sorry for confusion.

    Peter

  19. I try to import a gedcom file as 2nd data set.

    1. How do I get Gedcom "Birth"-tag imported and assigned as "Syntymä"-tag (=translation)? And other tags aswell?

    2. How to I assign Place style correct?

    3. How do I control place import?

    Background

    1. All individuals are imported ok, but how can I assign std tag types but "renamed" ones. I have translated Birth -> Syntymä, however Gedcom tag is still "BIRT". (In import Step 7. Tag Types options, only Birth-tag is available but not Syntymä-tag.)

After import, all people have Birth tag, but not Syntymä tag as I want.

I was afraid to copy any individuals cause dont want to create "birth" tag types to set n:o 1.

    2. Also difficulties with default Data set style fo places. My default place style is set to Suomi. However, after import each tag has place as "US standard place style".

    3. After import all place info is in State-field. OK, this is easy to fix put better if all place fiélds would go closer to final field.

    Thank you in advance

And thanks to Terry Reigel. His artilces about Projects and Data sets http://tmg.reigelridge.com/projects-datasets.htm everyone should read. Btw, all other artilces are worth of gold too)))

    Peter

  20. At irregular intervals my project loses its focus. It sometimes happens when entering data that the details window shows one person, but the tag entry box shows another. If I don't notice it in time it saves the new information for the wrong person. Usually when the tag entry window closes, I have one person in the top half of the windows (i.e. detail, image, flags, associates), but another person in the bottom half (i.e. siblings and children). It is random and maintenance does not solve it. Today it also showed the same behaviour when I closed the details window and opened it again. In this case it only showed the different person in the details window, but left all the other windows with the original person. I assume that the project is somehow corrupted.

    also

since a recent re-install of everything (OS and all software) I can't create any vcf reports. Vcf is installed, and I can open it and look at previously created reports, but when I want to create a descendant chart for example it lets me select all the options, but when I click on create chart, the report definition screen closes but nothings happens. Can this be resolved without reinstalling tmg.

    Thanks for your help.

    Marianne

    Marianne,

I get the same all the time (=while adding people after about every 10). Quick help is to close TMG and start again.

I have assumed it is because I have "Project explorer linked to other windows".

And somehow this link is not allways updated. If I select person from Project explorer, correct person comes up in individual window. But sometimes not wise versa ie. f.ex. selecting father from individual window does not select that father in Project explorer.

And if I now click "add tag", it goes to wrong person. So the person I have open, is not the one tag is added to.

I use Project exploror with birth day order.

    Peter

Btw. Sort of the same happens somehow in main place list. The one I open and edit is not updated but the previous place on the list ????

  21. Peter, I know this won't help now, but I had a similar situation about a month ago. My 4 1/2 year old laptop shut down without notice when I was running on battery. I had TMG open at the time and could not open it afterwards. My backup was a couple days old. Fortunately, about 3 months ago I started using BackBlaze. It is set to continuous. I was able to copy all the project files from the mirror folder on BackBlaze and only lost a couple hours work.

    Jan

    Jan,

sounds like an option to think about.

What I did: I added backup button to toolbar. I also have there reindex, optimize and validate. I have to run those constantly ie. about after every hour. So backup is not big additional thing.

    Peter

  22. I needed to go on so had to restore.

Lost was not that big, just one day work. However, it is more difficult to remember what was done between backup and restore.

Maybe one day there will be a log file to see what was done during last 1-2 day (=Wishlist  )

An other job is to check if everything has been restored as it should and was before.

To TMG ppeople few comments about restore. So far found few things which did not return with restore as was before.

    - In references: Research info / Address field first line I had empty but after restore there was text (I think it was reading "house" or something, sorry, I just cleared it and did not write down that time)

    - In references: Advanced:Backup file directory I had different but it was reseted to point back to TMG file directory.

Just minor things but hope it helps.

    Peter
