  1. When you open up the Master Place List, there is a Replace button on the right hand side that should do what you need. Personally, I just leave the country blank for places in the USA.

As I understand this function, if I put United States in the left column and blank or US in the right column only those records with all other fields blank will be changed. Is that right? And if I put a state and country in on the left and only blank or US on the right I lose the state in all those records. I think I've made that mistake before???? There are just too many combinations to change them that way. That's why I was looking at the utility but that doesn't seem to work for places.

  2. Maybe a dumb question: I want to change all of the place names with "United States" to "US". While I had updated my Master Place List at one time with the name spelled out, which I like, it takes up way too much room on a chart and is somehow irritating since it appears so often, even in other reports. I hate to now go back and do each place name over again.

Maybe there is a way to change it just for a chart/report? I have/love John Cardinal's utility program but cannot find a way to do this in that program either.

I have also tried leaving the country name off the chart, which is fine for my husband's family since so far they are all from here(!) but it looks ridiculous for most of my lines since we're Heintz 57 with lots of immigrants.

    Any help appreciated.

  3. While I think this would be really great, I suspect the programmers would consider this their worst nightmare! Of course my suggestions would be knowledgeable, effective and useful..... well, I think so anyway.

However, I know from experience that programming, and database applications in particular, are not as straight forward as they might appear. And more than a few of the wishlist items are really user support/training issues, which would seriously clutter the forum and hinder the whole purpose of having it separate. Not to mention that some might find it frustrating/embarrassing to have their suggestions moved, much less blown up by the technical logic or a programmer.

Having said that, a separate forum for very experienced users or those that are also software specialists in another field could enhance the product. Sort of an expert-level forum, similar to higher-level user support. I would guess that some users, notably those that create utilities and tips, probably have some higher access. Any new forum should be closed, either completely or partly - only the above users could post for example. This last would provide some interesting and possibly amusing posts for the rest of us, I'm sure.

Instead of moving suggestions out that already have solutions, the suggestions from the main forum could be moved to this special forum with a note on the original that it is being considered.

  4. I really like the automatic relationship tag you can turn on under Preferences/other. Is there any way to be able to filter or accent or report based on this tag? I think it would be more complicated than it looks but it would be helpful, especially when cleaning out merged databases. Even a yes/no flag based on it - as opposed to eighth cousin 16 times removed - so only those without any relationship to the focus person could be flagged or placed in a focus group.

And then all my problems would be solved.....

    Thanks, Lori Bragg

  5. Have you tried changing the PE sort to say ID# and then back to surname?  Is the problem still there in an ID# sort?  Do the names and ID#s appear normally in the Simple Picklist?

    Virginia

Tried that - stayed the same. The regular names and IDs appear normally in the Picklist but there are still about a dozen (unknown)s in the list with various ID#s attached that are also in use elsewhere. Also odd: my number 1 person, my husband, stays at the top of the PE no matter what sort is used! Stranger and stranger.

  6. What version of TMG are you using - 6.04?

How is the Project Explorer sorted - by surname or some other sort?

If you print out a Family Group Sheet for yourself, is that correct or does it show the same misinformation?

You might try deleting the index files for the project. Those are the 29 *.CDX files in the project folder (each file beginning with the project name). This is done while TMG is closed. When you open the project again, the indexes will be regenerated. It's always good to have a current backup before deleting any files.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:( No luck. Yes, I'm using 6.04 and the group sheet prints fine. Project Explorer is sorted by surname. When I make my son the focus person he is not married to anyone, although he does have 4 (unknown) children.

I deleted the index files and reopened the file but the problem recurs. Interestingly, I added a tag for my daughter that I noticed was missing and the 12 (unknown)s in the PE had the number 4 after them instead of the number 2. My daughters number isn't 4 though, it's 15673!

I use this software every single day and I don't think I could live without!it! Even with weird stuff it is indispensable.

Thanks for the possible solution, Lori

  7. Oh my gosh - how is this possible? My 11 year old son is married to my dad and has four children! I have actually had this problem for awhile and it usually involves the 10 people in my database. Usually I reindex/optimize/validate integrity and it goes away. But this time I just now did all that and it's still there. Also, the four "children" of my son and my dad have numbers between 1 and 10 but their names are unknown - although those numbers are also used for other family members. And when I look at the project explorer there are 12 (unknown), (2) entries at the top (no filters). Number two is actually me! Am I missing something? Do I need to perform some other indexing?

    Any help appreciated.
