  1. In my early days of using TMG I added a lot of exhibits, both internal and external, directly to the person. Eventually I began to add them to specific event tags or sources, which is the way I prefer it now. I would like to detach them from the individual and re-attach them to the appropriate event tag. Is there a way to do that from the exhibit log? Or another, hopefully easy, way to do it? I would prefer not to delete exhibits from the log, then search for them again -- too prone to losing track, or even losing the exhibit altogether. Thanks for any ideas, --Liz Hubbard
  2. Hi, My XP machine died suddenly, but fortunately I have recent backups of most everything, including a record of my TMG license number, and a .sqz file to restore once I get the software up and running. I've downloaded the 7.04 setup file and run it, but it hangs up at the end, with a little window saying something like "updating configuration files. please wait" So I wait, and wait, and wait some more. And it never goes away, and TMG won't start ("Error installation. Please reinstall program"). So I tried to re-install over top of the first installation, but it won't accept that without first un-installing, and that process in turn won't run because it can't find the uninstall.log. So, I deleted the entire folder in the programs (x86) folder, and started from the beginning. Same problem, loooooong wait (30 minutes or more...) at the "system configuration...please wait" point. This is a brand new Win 7 x64 machine, with lots of memory and things usually install very quickly, so I'm not sure what's going on there. Eventually the machine went to sleep and so did I. Same issue this morning, not installed correctly, can't uninstall. Any suggestions please? Secondly, in the hope that the above is eventually solved, can I do the following without causing problems? 1. Restore from a .sqz file (about 2 weeks old) 2. Close TMG 3. Replace specific files in the project folder with newer versions from my online backup service. It has current copies of all files from the night before the XP death, but not a .sqz. Thanks, --Liz Hubbard
  3. Michael, Thank you for your reply. I had read all the help files, and Terry's tips, and chose to merge the two datasets ("There are some very good reasons to merge Data Sets, including merging Data Sets one originally created separately and now wants combined."). I suspect that the issue of three copies of each source (I'm a "splitter" not a "lumper" so they are very specific) may have been my own doing. The process of creating a new dataset, then merging it back into my main dataset seems to have dragged along all the sources each time. No doubt that was a poor choice I made at the time of creating the new dataset. It's clear in the now-merged master source list that the first one of each set of three (lowest source id number) has been cited, and the other two (numbered in two much larger sequences) have no associated citations. All the sources are in the same dataset. A few instances merit merging as you note. In hindsight, it's possible that copying individuals instead of merging may have worked better, but would also have been time-consuming. It has been somewhat tedious, but I have nearly finished deleting the excess 1500 or so sources. I have noticed too, that repositories have been duplicated or triplicated, and will deal with them the same way. What would have worked the very best, would be not to have created a separate dataset in the first place. From now on, everyone stays in one dataset, in one project!! --Liz
  4. Some time ago, I created a subset of people in my project and created a new dataset from them, to do some separate research for my daughter-in-law's parents. I discovered that there were subsequently two copies of every source in the master source list. If I filtered by dataset, it showed only the ones for the active dataset, but I had to do that every single time I opened the list, so I usually didn't bother, and just got used to having 1500 sources instead of 750. I finally found the two-dataset approach to be unworkable, and merged the datasets. I've now finished merging the 47 extra people, but Help! now the Master source list has three!! copies of every source! Two of each source have no citations. I suspect this replication had something to do with the merge. I have been slowly going throught the list and deleting the two "extra" entries, but it is a very slow process, and there are about 750 sources to get through (tripled!) Is there a more efficient way to do this? And how can I avoid this replication in future? Thanks for any insights, --Liz
  5. unwanted "open Table" dialog appearing

OK, I've been trying a couple of other things, based on older posts. I've selected a specific printer, instead of the Windows default (even tho' I'm using output to screen). I've disabled two datasets in this project which I am not using at present, via the Dataset Manager, and have run the various maintenance tasks (again) which still report no errors, but hey, it can't hurt! I've now run a couple of reports with no problem, and added one exhibit. But I'm still cautious because I had apparently "solved" these issues yesterday, and had a period of successful reports and data entry, and then it started up again today without warning. Thanks for your help, any further ideas most welcome, --Liz
  6. unwanted "open Table" dialog appearing

Thank you Virginia -- but I have the PE in my layout, sorted by surname, not collapsed, but it is linked. I have shut down TMG and restarted, but the problems persist. What puzzles me is that there is no apparent "event" that may have triggered these problems, such as new software etc. I've pasted the most recent error.txt file below. 7. I am running into a series of flaky behaviors of TMG 6.12, especially when running List of... reports. Sometimes they run, but don't appear on the taskbar (or behind an open window), sometimes they do. Sometimes I get a "template not found" error -- I've tried the Delete definition trick with mixed success. The weirdest is when a Windows Open dialogue box appears, defaulting to the TMG directory, and asking me to select a TABLE / DBF file. This has happened when running a report, and also when I click on the exhibit icon in a tag-entry screen to add or look at an exhibit. Once, the exhibit icon was "green" when there were no exhibits, so I clicked on it to see what was there, and got the Open window. Sometimes "cancel" will make it go away, and I can continue, sometimes not and I have to end TMG and re-start it. Sometimes I get a message about ALIAS not found. If there were a clear pattern to these errors, I would tell you! This has come on just in the past 24 hours, and I have been doing data entry and data cleanup all week before that, with no problem. Rebooting, file optimization, validation, reindex, etc have all been tried Any clues?
