  1. 8.04 update failure

Problem: TMG8 v.8.04 will not open [it opened two days ago. I've not added any programs.] When I click on my desktop TMG8 icon, nothing happens. If I right-click the icon and "Open" or "Open as administrator", nothing happens. Things I tried to do: I tried the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter twice. no luck. I tried to Uninstall the program through Control Panel > Programs and Features > The Master Genealogist v8.04.000 and intended to start over with a download from www.whollygenes.com, but during the Uninstall process a message appears: "Could not update the .ini file C:Program Files (X86) The Master Genealogist v8 TMG_Updater ini. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it." Tried that Uninstall process four times. Same results each time. I did verify that the .ini file in that file path exists. I am signed in as Administrator and was able to see the file name. What do I try next to get my TMG program to work again? Many thanks. Bill Martin Denver, CO
  2. Thank you, Jim. It worked perfectly. I'm back in operation. Bill
  3. Where do I go on the Wholly Genes website to find "the trial version (current version) from the WG site"? for version 8. I downloaded it when I bought it, but it seems to now be corrupted. I'd like to download Version 8 again and start over.
  4. Conversion Error #14

We're making progress - using all my new knowledge from you and Jim, I'm now able to generate a Journal Descendancy Report in HTML. It contains everything I want - Table of Contents, a short text description of each person, a surname Index and Endnotes. Clicking on the superscripts in the text even gets me to the correct source record in the Endnotes. Using the message box [it appears right after the report is generated]: "File successfully exported to (and then the correct file name). Open the file now?" 'Yes' opens the report, with full functionality like I mentioned above. 'No' closes the screen. Then I use the file path shown to me in the "File successfully exported to..." statement to get to the report. The one remaining problem - when I try to use your suggestion that I open that HTML file with my Microsoft Word 2007 [and then save it as a DOC file], the page is blank. Is there something I'm still doing improperly? -Bill
  5. Conversion Error #14

You were quite correct, Jim. As I explained to Virginia: Looking at the contents of my C drive, there is a C:\Program Files (x86). Therefor, I've always assumed that I have a 32-bit computer. However, using your suggestion...The Control Panel > Hardware Properties shows I have an "ACPI x64-based PC". Clearly, a 64-bit processor. WHEW! Now we know the problem. So...I'll quit trying to generate a report in RTF. There is a Word for Windows 2000 or later. I'm using Microsoft Word 2007, so I selected the "...2000 or later" option. Clicking on that gets me a file name ending in .DOC, which is just fine. The file name is C:\Users\bill\Desktop\test 6.DOC I copied and pasted the C:\Users\bill\Desktop\ from the TMG taskbar File>Preferences>Advanced>Report output title...so it should match. When I click on Create Report, it starts OK "Generating report for 40 people" but then quits with a WordPort Spawn Error box. Clicking on OK gets me a box saying "Conversion error #20: Unknown error - Contact Tech Support." Now what? -Bill

  7. Conversion Error #14

After trying to delete the report configuration name and getting the message "This is a standard report definituion and cannot be deleted. Would you like to reset the options to the defaults?" I clicked Yes. The Configuration name "Descendancy Narrative" stayed in the box. Then, using your suggestion, I changed the Report Definition File Name to just test.rtf [The TMG Taskbar File>Preferences>Advanced has the Report output path as C:\Users\bill\Desktop ] When I clicked on Create Report, that file path appeared in the File Name box as C:\Users\bill\Desktop\test.RTF Then the progress report screens seemed to indicate that processing was continuing OK until I got a screen WordPort Spawn Error. I clicked OK and got a screen Conversion Error #20: Unknown error - contact tech support. An icon did appear on my Desktop with test.rtf as its title. I clicked on it - It was empty. -Bill

When I clicked Delete, a message appeared: "This is a standard report definituion and cannot be deleted. Would you like to reset the options to the defaults?" I clicked Yes. The Configuration name "Descendancy Narrative" stayed in the box and was not deleted. -Bill
  9. Conversion Error #14

Jim, if it's any help...TMG is creating the correct file path... C:\users\bill\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v7\Report_output\Descendants of John & Susannah (Irwin) Martin.RTF ...to my Descendant Indented Narrative report. It's just that when I try to Open it [also when I right-click to look at its Properties] that file is empty. -Bill

Jim I did exactly as you said, but still got the error #14. What might I try now?
  11. Conversion Error #14

Virginia, I'm also getting the "Conversion Error #14", even after meticuously following your instructions. I'm running TMG 7.04.0000 Gold Edition on Windows 7 (X86) 32-bit, and using Microsoft Word 2007 as my word processor. Using the TMG taskbar File>Preferences>Current Project Options>Advanced and going to Report Output, I typed: C:\users\bill\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v7\Report_output\ Clicked Apply and OK. Back at my TMG project, from the taskbar I selected Report>Descendant Narrative. On the Report Definition screen, I selected Use the Current Focus Person and it properly showed : Subject(s) of the Report: One person, 5:8061 John Martin. The Report Definition shows: Save To: file type: Rich Text Format (RTF) File Name:C:\users\bill\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v7\Report_output\Descendants of John & Susannah (Irwin) Martin.RTF When I click on Create Report, it seems to start OK with messages "Creating text for 40 people"..."Processing Endnotes, Footnotes". And then the message: Conversion Error #14: Could not create destination file". When I look in the Report Output, the proper RTF file name is there, but it has 0 bytes in it. Where did I mess up? -Bill Martin Denver, CO
  12. How do I shut off TMG and Visual Chartform screens at startup? I’m using TMG Version 7.04 with a Windows 7 Home Premium operating system. At the time I shut off the computer, I first close all programs – so TMG is NOT running when I turn off the computer. When I Start my computer each day, without clicking anything, I immediately get these four screen displays loaded on top of each other to my monitor screen: 1. Welcome How would you like to proceed? [ [Then there are ‘buttons’ for Last, Sample, Select, Restore, New, Exit]] 2. Visual Chartform - (New_VCF_Chart) 3. Welcome to The Master Genealogist Each time you enter The Master Genealogist™, you will see the Welcome window. In this window you can choose: [[Then there is an explanation of Last, Sample, Select, Restore, New, Exit plus paragraphs for Hot Keys as well as Tips and Tricks for various Operating systems.]] 4. Visual Chartform Help My Internet Explorer “Internet Preferences” are, at Startup, to open Internet Explorer and display the Google search page. It does not happen. I get TMG and Chartform instead. With a Project open, I used TMG File> Preferences> Startup and Exit to test the effect of checking or unchecking “Show Welcome Window”. It changed the sequence of TMG displays, but all four screens continued to display whether the box was checked or unchecked. How do I shut off the TMG and Visual Chartform screens at startup? Thank you for the advice. -Bill Martin Denver, CO
  13. With TMG version 6.12 running, I closed all projects. Then I tried to open the file VANHORN__.pjc. It is a 2.34KB file, size on disk 16.0KB The message appeared: "The project is in use elsewhere. Please select another project." There was no project runing, so I Exited TMG. Upon restarting TMG and trying to open the VANHORN__.pjc file, the message "Repair Mode has been activated....etc." appeared, so I exited TMG. This time, upon restarting TMG, I got the message "C:\The Master Genealogist\Projects\VANHORN_ND.dbf not found. " TMG automatically shut down and returned me to Windows. I shut down the computer and Restarted it. Then I restarted TMG. When I tried to open the file VANHORN__.pjc, TMG went through the same process as described earlier. Questions: Is there a different way for me to open that project? If not, is there a way for me to repair it? Thank you for the advice. -Bill Martin Denver, CO billmartin44@ieee.org

  16. TMG6.07 Family Group Sheet

For a person with multiple spouses and children of each spouse, how can one specific "family" of the focus person and one specific spouse [plus just their children] be formed? I've tried the Explorer and Focus Group approaches with just the focus person; just the focus person and the selected spouse; and focus person, selected spouse plus their children. But I still get a FGS Report showing the focus person and all spouses and all children.
