  2. Are we talking about the same thing? I'm asking about the Vista 64 bit problem with word processing, not vesrion 8.
  3. Jim Saw the comment in newsletter on this problem. Do you think Solution is a month, Three months or six months away? I don't plan on publishing another book till late summer early fall. I was just wondering what your best guess is? Thanks
  4. Accent Direct Line

Ok - I have read all the above on accents, watched the instruction video on accents. I'm trying to accent all the direct ancesors of my grandson and for some reason in one of my branches it does not accent the direct ancestors after a certain number of generations but it does tell me they are a direct ancestor in the relation flag. I would appreciate any suggestions.
  5. TMG V7 Output to PDF Problem

Ok the only thing I had not done was the suggestion you made on Dec 3 2008 at 10:45 to create a dummy port which I have now done and it hangs up again. After I created the dummy port I restarted the system to make sure it took. First ime it did not work but I have done it several times now and it works. Thanks for your patience with us no MIS people.
  6. TMG V7 Output to PDF Problem

Jim I updated to Adobe Reader version 9 and restarted the system after that sucessful upload. When I try to generate and save to a pdf file the Pedigree report. The program indicates it calculating the text text per the progress box to 100% but the program locks up there and will not go any further. I tried using two different individuals but it locked up on both never leaving the progress box. I have printed out the string of all the entries on TMG V& Output to PDF printer and will review them again in print instead of on the screen to see if I'm miaaing anything.

  10. TMG V7 Output to PDF Problem

Just purchased a new computer which has Zista and runs at 64. I sure miss XP! Using TMG 7.03. I only have two printers installed on my control Panel. - Default is HP8100 and second is Wholly Genes PDF Writer V3. If It makes any difference. Within TMG on printer ser up I using the same HO 8100 printer and I have installed the PDF printer. I'm using Adobe Reader 8 which was installed/updated11/16/08. When I run ther pedigree report format to print preview or printer it works fine but when I try to save the the Pdeigree Chart which you can only run in Acrodat (PDF) format it locks up the program even for a one page report. When I hit cancel after waitning as long as 20 min . I have to close the program. Then when I try to reopen the program after it shuts down becasue it did not shut down correctly naturally picking last will not work becasue it did not close down correctly. When I go into Select it still will not open correctly. Now even when I restorte the pprogram will not open my file. Hopefully if I shyrt down completely It will Open back up and get wach with the forum. Hopefully what I need is some patch or advice to tell me how I can save a Pdeigree PDF.
  11. TMG V7 Output to PDF Problem

I have Version 7.03 on a new computer with Vista (I hate Vista and Miss my old XP) When I try to run a pedigree report I get the following errors " OLE IDispatch exception code 1801 from cdntf: printer Installation failed." and "Allas 'GOREP' is not found." and it shuts down my TMG program. The I get another message "Unknown member ROPROTECTIONMAN." i just tried running an individual Narative and it worked and printed out to my printer which is also new. I did set up the printer under printer set up. Appreciate any help you can give me.
  12. I currently have the relationship option turned on that list what relationship a subject is to a key subject on each of the individuals detail screens I call up. I really like this option and would like to know if there is a way I can get this relationship to print out on the journal reports if I'm printing a book for the specific key subject?
  13. Disappearing mouse

Is this with the new Vista or the older Microsoft operating systems?
  14. Book Management

About every three to five years I print out books of my geneological efforts for my parents, children and grandchildren. I like to include the usual title page, dedication, introduction then a ancestral pedigree chart, geneological report (Journal) and statistic sheet for five different families (Each of my spouses and my families and my Son-in-law's family) followed by a real good index. Was really excited when I found out TMG embeds index codes and loads directly into MS Word. Problem comes when the pedigree charts and statistic sheets do not. Lst time I did this I used the Ultimate Genoligist and before that Roots which both downloaded into RTF. Like I said love the embeding of index codes and documents and photos into TMG. Question how do you get all the files to line up so it will print correct page numbers? I do have access to standard version of Adobe at which can convert the ancestor pedigree chart and the Stistic report files into MS Word. Will this alow me to handle the page numbering and print controls so I can print on both sides of the paper or am I wasteing my time? Or is there a better way I can accomplish want I was able to do in the past when printing my books?
  15. Wish List - Generations and Images

I know it only works on the reports that can be download into a TMG recognized word processor program but I thought you can add page breaks and enlarge or move pictures around to fit pages and generate the index in the word processor program and it will be correct. Aren't the index codes embedded for this reason? Still new myself with TMG and have not tried it yet, but I thought this was one of the advantages of TMG. One problem is that not all the reports download into a recognized word processor program to use this advantage. knowledgable experenced users am I correct?
  16. I would think for the privacy of the members Wholly Genes keeps the details of the membership group private except for what the members post to be available public. Would it be possible for someone to sort out all the West Tennessee (Memphis to Nashville) addresses and send an e mail out to see if there is any interest in forming a user group for our area?
  17. Version 7

Being able to suggest future changes is really a healthy thing for TMG software. With Version 7 coming out in the near future it is probably to late to make changes now, so I hope the same topic or theme will be set up for version 8. What we the users have to remember is that changes costs programing time which the owners of the software have to justify if the investment is worth their efforts. As evidenced by the theme that allowed everone to show how they set up their window indicates, there are probably as many things that each of us use that we each think are very important but other users might not think as important and most important as stated above the owners might think more expensive than they would get for their invenstment of programing time. This long list of desires for version 7 is great but may I suggest the owners of TMG come up with a questionare that each of us in the community could rank possible areas of improvements in order of importance we would most like to see. An area thst I personally would like to see improvements in would be "Book Management" but someone else might want more or better internet research oportunities. I would think the Wholly Genes company would want this see this possible broad range of what is important to their users and such a survey if well written sould provide such insite and guidance as to what the majority of users think most important. All the people who have used other software and switched to TMG have good ideas where TMG could be improved because they have seen strengths of other software that TMG could be improved with. Don't get me wrong, I love the strengths that TMG has right now but nothing is perfect and the day anyone starts thinking they have what is perfect and they don't have to listen to users and make improvements someone else will come along with a better mouse trap. Remember the Edsel was a result of a survey. The problem was not that it was a survey but the people they surveyed were the one's at home during work hours and not the one's who actually bought and drove the family autos. Long time users might not know what the competition is offering out there.
  18. Book Management

Thanks Virginia and Lawrpaul - I will try both of these. Am I a minority in that I want to get my data out in hard copy for future generations. We all love the momentary thrills of finding family history, but isn't the real purpose of doing all this to pass what we find on to future generations so it is not lost? I'm new to The Master Genealogist program and find it miles ahead of ROOTS, The Ultimate Family Tree and FTM which I have used over the past 20 or so years as far as the data you can record. Hopefully my problems being able to do what I want to do are because I don't understand the program yet. I was able to do it on Ultimate Family Tree seven years ago transferring everything to RTF, the MS WORD and compiling in a master document. TMG will let me go direct to MS WORD, embeds the Index codes and Exhibits on the Journals which is great but the pedigree charts are still giving me trouble - again thanks for helping me out. I'll keep plugging along.
  19. Book Management

Another possible solution would be if I could just enter the desired beginning page number. Looked in the user guide, help window and no mention of a way to enter starting page number. Is this possible?
  20. Book Management

My MIS person at work tried converting the Acrobat (PDF) Pedigree chart file to a word processing file today using the Standard Version of Adobe Acrobat that was supposed to be able to do this. She got a font error which keep it from converting. When I came home tonight to change to a different font as she suggested I noticed the Ariel that it was in did not have a symbol in front of it when I listed the availabe fonts. Does the A in front of some of the fonts indicate they are Adobe fonts and should convert? I'll try a different font tomorrow. Any suggestions from anyone out there who puts numerous reports together to make a book? I desire to convert my PDF pedigree charts into a Word document is so I could include them in a Master Document file with other files of each of my reports I want to include in my book to be able to generate an index from all the files combined and get my page numbers correct. Have checked the User Guide and Lee Hoffman's book and so far I have not found much on being able to do what I want to do. As stated before I want to create a book for my Grandchildren with: Title Page Dedication Table of Contents Preface Grandchildrens Father's (my Son in Law) Family short introduction (Text and exhibits) Grandchildrens Father's Family Pedigree Chart Grandchildrens Father's Family Ancestral Journal Grandchildrens Father's Family Statistical Report My Father's Family short introduction (Text and exhibits) My Father's Family Pedigree Chart My Father's Family Ancestral Journal My Father's Family Statistical Report My Mother's Family short introduction (Text and exhibits) My Mother's Family Pedigree Chart My Mother's Family Ancestral Journal My Mother's Family Statistical Report My Wife's Father's Family short introduction (Text and exhibits) My Wife's Father's Family Pedigree Chart My Wife's Father's Family Ancestral Journal My Wife's Father's Family Statistical Report My Wife's Mother's Family short introduction (Text and exhibits) My Wife's Mother's Family Pedigree Chart My Wife's Mother's Family Ancestral Journal My Wife's Mother's Family Statistical Report Index Hope you can see by all the above to get the page numbering correct I can't just go print a number of reports individually. I WOULD THINK I WOULD HAVE TO PUT ALL THE SEPARATE FILES INTO A MASTER DOCUMENT TO BE ABLE TO GET THE INDEX AND PAGE NUMBERING CORRECT. If anyone has ever done anything like this before with The Master Genealogist I would apprecate guidance to make it happen. If the Pedigree charts were RTF like I've used in the last time I printed my books I would have no problem.
  21. Book Management

I have too many generations for the compressed report - it starts wraping the text around to the other side of the report. I was hoping to create all my word files and turn them over to one of the quick printing places with better printers than my ink jet so I don't spend days printing and get better quality at the same time. I already knew I was going to have to add these people manually to the index. Thanks for the suggestion. You are correct on the statistical report - it will load into Word.
  22. Trying to run journal report and it hangs up and I get a "program not responding". I'm trying to do an ancestor report in the Gold version advanced mode. It will have 632 subjects out of a data base of about 9000 subjects. gets to about 18% and hangs up. My system has 2G of Ram and more than enough disk space to write if it uses more that the 2G ram. NEW USER. Do I have something set up wrong in the program or system? BKreuter
  23. Journal Report Failure

Yes - for people who might have the same problem in the future. I ran another family with almost twice as many subjecy and it ran so it was not a system or program problem. I had just converted my file over from FTM and apparently there was a bug or something with one of my subjects. I tried running the report with fewer generations until I got down to four generations and it ran witout hanging up. I then ran the report with each person in that generation till I found the subject causing the problem. I disconected that ancestor and tried running the report wide open again and it ran so this was my problem subject. I re entered the subject his spouse and reran and it ran without hanging up. I re entered each of the children and connected the child that was an ancester and it ran OK again. Then I connected the subject and his spouce's ancestors and the report ran without a problem. I had read one of the other entries about a year earlier and it had a problem with the NOTE fields. This subject did not have any note's.
  24. Family Filter

Does any one out there have what I would call a family filter? I learned how to do a direct ancestor filter on one of the training viodeos. What I need is what we get when we run Journal reports. Example would be all the ancestors of say my father then all the children of those ancestors, the children's spouces and the children's spouces parents - like what would print out on the ancestor Journal report.
  25. File Save

I'm a new TMG user (one Week) I would like to keep my projects on two machines - First onmy desk top from which I do majority of work, Scan in new exhibits and print all my reports from and second on a lap top that I could take with me when I travel to visit family and do research. First is it legal for me to use same program on two machines without buying a second copy? Second having difficulty knowing what files to transfer back and forth to make sure any changes made are not lost when I go back and forth. AND HOW! Appreciate suggestions BKreuter
