  1. UK Census tags

Hi Alan I have ones that are satisfactory for me - though every now and again I tweak them . I tend to use Roles a lot adding new ones as necessary from the census entries. For example I have a Head of household Role with the sentence: The 1901 census <[L]> listed [RF:Head Of Household] as head of household. <[M1].> <He was enumerated with [WO].> Here [M1] is information on the Head's age and recorded place of birth. [WO] lists all the other persons enumerated (provided I have entered them) The spouse will be given the Role Wife, with the sentence: [RP:Wife] was listed as the wife of [R:Head Of Household] in the 1901 census <[L]>. <[WM].> I enter all other persons as Witnesses and use the Witness Memo to enter their age and birth place. If there is more than one person with the same Role I use, e.g. Son1, Son2, Son3 etc. All entries are done at one time citing the one source for the census. I use one 1901 census source (all my census data has come from Ancestry images): Ancestry.com 1901 England Census Image and I add the reference details to the Citation detail Any information on occupations is added as an Occupation Tag to the appropriate personagain citing the same source. My advice is to continue experimenting, checking the output using the Individual Narative report to see how it reads. If you come up with something good please share it. Many of us are learning all the time and like to continue to pick up suggestions. Les Wylde
  2. Missing census event

Jeff I have been entering a lot of census information. As far as I know I haven't lost any pre-entered census Tags, but I'll keep a careful watch to see if this happens to me. Like you I enter separate Occupation Tags from the censuses so if the main census Tag goes awol, I should see it. Les
  3. Sentence Structure

One way I did this was to create a local sentence for the particular Tag of interest and use <in [L2]> instead of <[L2]>. This ensures the change only applies to tis particular Tag. Les
  4. I have created a new Tag (Birth Reg) to cope with quarter registrations, having read some suggestions on TMG-L. I have a principle with sentence: [PS] <birth was|and [POS] birth were> registered <at [L]> in the quarter ending < [D].> <[M].> and a Child Role with sentence: The birth of [RF:Child] was registered <at [L]> in the quarter ending < [D].> <[M].> Both created Gobally in the Master Tag List. During Tag entry at local level I can select either Principal or Child depending on how I want the sentence to appear. If I use Principal and check the report using the IN report, the sentence is as expected. I then select the Child Role in the Tag entry screen and check the IN report again. The sentence prints as expected for the Child Role. At this stage no sentence appears next to the "sentence" button on the Tag Entry Screen as expected for a Globally defined sentence. If I now click the "sentence" button, the correct Child Role sentence appears. If I now click "OK", the Child Role sentence now appears alongside the "sentence" button on the Tag entry screen as if it were a Local sentence. As far as I can tell this behaviour does not occur with any of my custom tags (like my census Tags) which I created in earlier versions of the programme (before v6.07) It is some time since I created a new custom Tag - am I doing something odd here why the sentence apears like a local sentence? Les
  5. Global versus Local sentences

Playing around a bit more. When I try to change fom Child role to Principal, I sometimes (though not every time0 get the following error message: Subscript is outside defined range 9 CNTPARENTCHILD.CMBP1ROLE.INTERECTIVECHANGE (abort, retry, ignore) the error log shows "2005.11.28, 21:35:04 1234Subscript is outside defined range." Clicking ignore allows me to continue with no apparent problem. Les
  6. How to make an event not primary

You can change them one at a time by highlighting the Tag in Person View and using the toolbar button for"Toggle Primary Mark on Current Tag" ( this is the asterisk) or use Edit>Toggle Primary. There may be a way to do it as a batch but I have never tried that. Les
  7. Trying to upgrade to Version 6.07

I got something similar last time I updated my laptop. If I leave my firewall active on the laptop I cannot do an automatic update, so instead I get the appropriate update from the Whollygenes site. Trouble was I couldn't find the appropriate update for V6.05 (UK) to v6.07. So I updated from V6.05 (US) to 6.07 and put the update file in the TMG folder. I then tried to run the update and got a similar error message. This left me with two options: 1) download the trial version of 6.07 and use my e-mail and unlock code to unlock it ( I have done this successfully in the past) 2) close down my firewall and do an automatic update (I went this route and it worked fine) You may want to try route 1, but if you do make sure you have an up-to-date backup first. 8. Quick Way to View Sources?

As far as I know the way you do it is the way to do it. Certainly it is the way I do it. It may be necessary to go this way as you can have more than one source cited for the Tag, going to the Tag entry window allows you to see the different sources cited for that Tag and then choose the one you want. By the way I can get to the Tag entry screen by double clicking on the tick in the column labelled S (I'm using v6.04). Having to burrow like this is, I suspect, one of the consequences of having such a flexible programme Les
  9. Citing the National Burial Index...

Ben I have one source set up for the NBI, as follows: Default Surety: 2 Abbreviation: NBI CD-ROM Source Type: CD-ROM produced from original records (note, this may not be the best description) Compilation Title: National Burial Index for England and Wales Short Compilation Title: National Burial Index Subject: Burials Compiler: Federation of Family History Societies <Date>: Second Edition 2004 (Note, I have taken this as the publication date not the burial date for a specific person) Publisher: FFHS Publications Ltd Publisher Address: 15-16 Chesham Industrial Centre, Oram Street, Bury For the person, in their burial Tag, I enter date and place of burial details. This seems to work for me but I am sure there are other ways which might suit you better. By the way enjoy the NBI. We thought we would exhaust it fairly quickly but we still use it, particularly now access to census information is so easy on-line which gives us new clues that need following up. Finally isn't it great that the NBI comes from Bury Les
  10. Wish List: Master Source List

Earl You can get close to what you want by instead of clicking on the binoculars, use F3 and the last used citation will appear. Sometimes this isn't quite the one you want (for example if I am entering UK census, I have sources for 1841, 1851 and so on) if my last used was 1841 and I now want 1851 when the 1841 comes up then click the binoculars and you will go to the MSL, close to where you want to be. Of course this only works if your similar sources are grouped in your MSL. By the way you still have to enter the citation detail. Les Wylde
  11. Changing Sex Flag

Seems to be working alright for me in V6.04, although I have only tried changing the flags one at a time. How are you trying to change the flag? Les Wylde
  12. When You open the marriage Tag what do you see in the top left two boxes? You should have against each their number and name. If not click on the binoculars and select the correct person i.d. number. Also check that to the right of these boxes you have primary name selected. Les Wylde
  13. Move to new computer

Ray You can go the way you sugested, frm 5.xx to 6.03. However, when I had to reload, after a Windows XP failure, I downloaded the latest version of TMG as a trial version from the Whollygenes website and then unlocked it with my version 6 e-mail address and serial number. I then restored my latest backup to the new version. It worked without a hitch. Les Wylde
  14. Add children efficiently

I think you need to add a father first ( as Surname ), then you can do it. Without any parents I have also found you cannot add a sibling. It may be possible to add the sibling as initially unrelated and make the relationship later. I would be interested to see if there is any other way to do this. Les Wylde
  15. Forum address change?

Same happened to me yesterday. I couldn't access the forum from my favourites. At first I thought the forum was down but eventually found the new url (forums201). I had no idea it was going to change either Les Wylde
  16. Members Map

Bob was quite right in the Newsletter - It is fascinating to see how the pin distribution is increasing. At the moment early morning here in the UK and there has been a big increase overnight. Les Wylde
  17. Add children efficiently

Just a point, but as far as I can tell you can only select Add a Child from the Add Menu and not from the Add New Person button on the toolbar. The latter only allows son or daughter as the child option for a parent. Les
