  1. Switching between datasets?

I should have added that all the people in my main dataset are accented so I can tell at a glance whether an individual is in the main dataset or in one of the others. I have over 60,000 in the entire project... Other than that there is no short cut method to activating or deactivating a dataset...you have to go to the Data Set Manager, select the data set, and click Enable or Disable.
  2. Switching between datasets?

Not that I know of, but why not leave both data sets activated? You don't have to deactivate one data set to be able to work in another. My main project has three data sets all of which I normally have activated although I primarily work only in the main data set, data set 1.
  3. Memo Fields on Data Entry

I assume you mean the Add Person window...Click on Setup in the Add Person window, select the Tag that you wish to have the Memo field and check Memo under "Show these data entry fields for the selected tag type:"...
  4. Exhibits, Internal or External

That's fine but be aware that Second Site requires external exhibits if you ever plan to use Second Site to build a web page.
  5. Exhibits, Internal or External

Providing both you and the family member are running the same version of TMG you probably want to transfer using the backup .sqz file. When you do the backup for transfer you can indicate to include the external exhibits in the backup. When the backup is restored on the family member's system the external exhibits will also be restored.
  6. Field missing from expanded picklist

In the case you were defining as an example you do not have to exit and reenter TMG to make the Name column reappear...just reselect you layout. The Layout saves the sizes of the columns. When you move the right edge of the name field left and make the name field disappear you in essence have placed the right border of the name field over the right border of the type field. When you try to grab the border and make the name field larger and the type field gets larger you have grabbed the right border of the type field not the name field. When both are overlapping it becomes difficult to grab the one that you want. With a little luck you might be able to grab the correct border eventually if you keep trying but normally you need some other method to restore the column sizes. In the case of the Detail view just reapply the layout. In the case of the Picklist you need to modify the app.ini as indicated...
  7. Importing: Did I miss something?

You're trying to "import" the new project into your existing project? You don't "import" ... you "merge" projects (from the File Menu). This will merge the new project as a separate data set within your existing project (your new project will still exist as a separate project and you may want delete it at a later date). Then in you existing project if you want to combine the two data sets you "merge" the data sets from the File>Data Set Manager Menu. You might want to read Terry's articles on Projects, Data Sets, and Merging at http://tmg.reigelridge.com/
  8. IT WORKS! (Roots4 file import?)

Best of luck...there's plenty of us ex-UFTers around who can help you if you have problems...
  9. IT WORKS! (Roots4 file import?)

Those are not the type of backups that can be read by the Import Wizard... Hopefully Dorothy at Tech Support can help...
  10. IT WORKS! (Roots4 file import?)

How did you do the backup? Did you use Roots IV backup which creates one .sqz file (which may span several disks) or did you backup by just making copies of the folders under Roots IV?
  11. IT WORKS! (Roots4 file import?)

No, do not change one of X_ELBOOK files to a .PRO file. There is only one .PRO file for a project and it is located in the Projects folder. You have the correct X_ELBOOK files, (.CDX, .DBF, and .FTP) not sure why the import wizard is not finding them. The Library folder is the correct location for them. Since you have a complete backup on floppies I would try the import using them and see if you have any better luck.
  12. IT WORKS! (Roots4 file import?)

Providing you copies everything in the Roots4 directory including all library files you can import directly by selecting RootsIV Project in the Import Wizard and selecting the .pro file for the project. It will point to all of the proper library files for import. Alternatively if you have a backup that contains all of the libraries you can select RootsIV Backup and select the backup file (.sqz). You will want to use the Advanced Wizard to do the import. You also might want to read an article which I wrote on transferring from UFT to TMG. It applies to Roots IV also. You can download area of the RUG User Group at http://www.rootsusers.org/ Be prepare to do the import a few times to check which options in the Import Wizard work best for you.
  13. font size in person view

Preferences>Program Options>Lists...change Min/Max Font Size. This will affect all lists such as the Pick List, etc.
  14. Importing: Did I miss something?

You do a backup and send the .sqz file. The recipient restores the backup. The recipient must have an equal or later version of TMG than the version used to make the backup...
  15. Deleting tags

TMG Utility should be able to do that for you...see http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/
  16. export problems

Why not use Second Site? It's what I use to share with others who do not have a genealogy program...
  17. The check marks are controlled by the which spouse was last viewed in the Family or Tree View for the individual. In the case you stated above it looks like each of his wifes were married only once so the check marks show for their children in their views. In his view, the second wife is evidently the one that is indicated as being last view in either the Family or Tree View and thus the check mark shows for her children in his Detail View. If you go to the Family or Tree View for him and click on the Spouse Button to change the spouse to his first wife and then return to his Detail View you will find that the three children by his first wife now have the check marks.
  18. Sort order for undated tags in reports

It works in reports for me and always has since I started using TMG...
  19. View History: more than ten?

There is no such option for view history available in TMG 5/6 (I would like to see one also) No list of configuration options has been made public as far as I know...
  20. Can't make an image primary

Only images attached to an individual can be made primary. Images attached to events cannot be primary. To attach an image to an individual go the individuals Detail View, click on the camera icon on the Tool bar...this opens the exhibit log. Right click in the gray area and select insert new image, audio, etc.....the first image added to an individual will automatically be made primary...you can look at properties for any image and on the General tab you will see the Primary check box...
  21. Sort order for undated tags in reports

First make sure you are in the Advanced Editing mode...Preferences>Program Options>Data Entry, click on Advance under Data Entry Mode... This gives you access to a Sort Date for all tags...enter a Sort Date to put the tags in the sequence you want...the Sort Date never prints and is just used for sequencing tags...
  22. Double click to change focus person

I suspect that you have item tips turn on for the window. Item tips interfers with double clicking. The trick is to first select the line with a single click which will close the item tip and then double click. Or just turn off the Item tips which is what I do.
  23. In the Report Definition Screen, select Options...on the General tab select "Custom Format"...on the Miscellaneous tab select "Include spouse events"...
  24. Program hangs up

One other thing you can try is go to Menu>Window and select Center Current Window which may not be grayed out...this will bring the active screen to the front and you can close it...
  25. Accessing Role-Witness Memos

Witness memos can only be referenced in the sentence for the witness. You can divide the witness memo into segments WM1 through WM9 for that one witness if you desire. For example, the witness sentence for one of my census tags: [:CR:][:CR:][:TAB:][W] was listed as [WM1]<at age [WM2]><, occupation as [WM3]><, born in [WM4]>, in the household of [R:Household head] <[L]> in the Census of <[M1]>< enumerated [D]> The witness memo looks like this: a son||21||a farmer||Tennessee Witness memos also cannot be reference in the sentence for the principals of the tag.
