  1. I started getting the exact same errors when trying to back up any one of my three totally separate Ver8 databases. Have rebooted, then run optimize, validate file integrity, optimize. Still got same errors.

Closed TMGv8, rebooted, turned off virus scanner, started TMG and tried File > Backup, but still got same errors.

Submitted ticket through TMG Help menu, but waiting for reply. Hope someone has a fix, as I'm holding off doing any more editing until this gets resolved.

  2. Have just started to get error codes when trying to back up any one of my three totally separate ver8 databases:

OLE error code 0x80040154: Class not registered. 35 MENUOBJTMG.MBACKUPWIZARD [Abort, Retry, Ignore]

If I select Ignore or Retry, I get:

GOWIZARD is not an object. 41 MENUOBJTMG.MBACKUPWIZARD

If I click X in upper right corner (instead of File > Exit), I get:

Visual FoxPro error: Cannot Quit Visual FoxPro

I have rebooted, then run optimize, validate file integrity, optimize. Still got same errors.

Closed TMGv8, rebooted, turned off virus scanner, started TMG and tried File > Backup, but still got same errors.

Saw on forum in response to same OLE Error Code to remove Wholly Genes PDF Writer v4 (Amyuni) driver, which I did, but did not install the PDF driver (don't need it; have Acrobat Pro). Still get same errors.

    Thanks! ~Carol

  3. Carol,

Vera has suggested a way for you can find the tags you want to change. I'd suggest you don't remove the offending phrase if you like the result, but modify the Sentence for the Principals to use two Memo segments, and put that phrase in the second segment. Something like this:

    Memo:

in the house they rented at 999 Main Street||with their three sons, Sam (9), George (7) and Fred (3)

    Principal Sentence:

    [P] <and [PO]> lived <[M2]><[M1]><[L]>

That ways the "with three sons..." phrase will only appear in the Principal's output. You can leave the Witness Sentences as they are (you don't even have to change [M] to [M1] in the Witness Sentence if you don't want to because they both produce the same output).

 Outstanding suggestion! I knew I came to the right place!!! Many thanks to all who replied. ~Carol

  4. I've done a pretty dumb thing, and would appreciate suggestions on how best to remedy the situation.

Each time I add a US Census tag, I also add a Residence-In tag, with HOH as Principal, and all family members as witnesses. I fill in City/County/State as stated on the Census, then add in the Memo something like [lived] "in the house they rented at 999 Main Street." This works out fine and the sentence reads exactly as I want.

Several months ago, I got the bright  idea of adding [lived] "with their three sons, Sam (9), George (7) and Fred (3)" before "in the house they rented..." Well, that works fine for the HOH's narrative, but the "three sons" bit doesn't work in the witnesses' narratives. I know, I know...should have checked EVERYTHING out before proceeding but here I am, faced with going back to delete the "three sons" phrase from 100-200 records. (Obviously, it's different in every one: three sons, widowed mother, etc, etc.).

I really don't want to change the memo sentence structure, as I like having the farm vs house plus street address there.

Suggestions on how best to proceed? At the very least, I was hoping to be able to generate a list of all IDs with a Residence-Lived In tag, but I'm not seeing how to do that. Any help gratefully appreciated!! ~Carol

  5. Restored project to new computer (Win 7 - 64) from old (XP), but get error when trying to run Help > Check for Updates: "Associated Application Not Found - No application in c:\program files (x86)\the master genealogist v7 is associated with the update engine so it cannot check for updates. Please make sure that this software is installed properly."

How do I correct this problem? All paths in Preferences > Current Project Options > Advanced are set to F:\Software\TMG\... if that makes any difference.

    Thanks in advance! ~Carol

  6. Virginia -

Good thought about bringing a file back to the hard drive from DVD and trying to open it there. Yes, that does work. And naturally the Read Only attribute is set on the DVD. So apparently vcf doesn't like not being able to "converse" with the original file that was opened. Good to know.

Therefore, I guess the answer is to not expect to open the file directly from the CD/DVD and doing a Save As to save changes. Good to know!

Thanks for helping me think this one through. ~Carol

  7. Did a backup to DVD of several vcf charts I'm working on, and file listing of DVD from Win (XP) Explorer shows all files burned fine. The burn, including verification, was successful, and I can open an Excel file that was burned at the same time.

However, when I File > Open in vcf and try to open a file from the DVD, I get "The parameter is incorrect" error message and can't open the file. I've tried opening several .vcf files from the DVD, all with the same results. Accessing the exact same files from my hard drive it was burned from opens fine.

Before I burn another, does anyone have any ideas? Confucius sure knew what he was talking about when he said, "Always check disc before deleting files from hard drive."

    Thanks! ~Carol in Detroit

  8. I have been attaching a scan/exhibit to each Source, but am confused as to whether I should also be attaching that same exhibit in the Citation and/or the Tag Entry dialog boxes that use that Source as a reference.

At this point, I am not using generic sources - each certificate is a separate individual source.

Pros and cons for attaching the same exhibit in places other than to the actual source it was scanned from? Report implications?

Thanks! ~Carol in Detroit (who's finally starting to get the hang of it!! :D )

  9. Am trying to add the spouse's name to the sibling's box on an Ancestor Chart.

On the Other tab, I have "Include Siblings" checked.

On the Data Types tab, for "siblings of ancestors," I would like to add a line telling the spouse's name. For this particular project, I don't care whether the marriage date/place shows or not.

I'm not quite clear on what all the Marr and Marriage tag types and groups are, but haven't stumbled on any that print the spouse's name.

    Any hints would be appreciated.

    Thanks! ~Carol in Detroit

  10. What page size have you selected for the paper size and/or in the printer settings?

Try setting it for the width of your banner paper and set the length as the height of the chart (plus margins) {The height is shown in tolls > diagram > diagram measurements}. I use this method when using roll paper.

Also what printer are you using and are you using an up to date driver?

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried a few quick things before heading off to the office, but don't think it's going to work.

I created a new chart for testing that is three sheets long and two sheets wide.

Printer is a new HP Business InkJet 1200 and drivers are totally up to date. I tried setting custom paper size in printer options to length of 33" (total height of chart) but the highest number the printer dialog box will accept is 14" (legal), even with banner paper, so guess that's out.

There is an obscure buried (that I never noticed) printer option where I can select Down, then Right but it's only available if I print more than one sheet per page. So I selected three sheets per page, but it did no good because it never saw the page to be more than 14" tall.

Played some with diagram measurements as you suggested, but it was still printing individual pages over, then across - even on banner paper.

Fortunately this does not involve a deadline (for once!) - just playing around to see if it could be done.

But, if you can do it, I should be able to also. So it's back to the drawing board for more testing - when time permits and pesky things like making a living, housework, etc. stop getting in the way.

Will post a followup if I hit on a solution.

    ~Carol

  11. This issue is a function of the options offered by the particular printer driver that you have installed provided by that printer's manufacturer (or Microsoft).

As a matter of fact, I have never seen a printer driver with a banner printing option that has the feature that you are wanting.

This is outside of the control of Wholly Genes to provide such a feature as it can only use the features provided by the printer driver.

I was afraid of that, but thanks for the reply, Robin. I had in mind something like what's available in MS Excel (File > Page Setup > Sheet tab: Page order down/over or over/down).

With the common use of InkJet printers and banner paper, I would think this would be a standard feature. Even good ol' Generations had a "Tile left to right" on/off option.

Maybe I'll go on record as suggesting it as a future added feature.

    Thanks, again! ~Carol

  12. If my .vcf chart is three sheets wide by five tall, the default page order is to print over, then move down and print the next row of three sheets.

I'd like to use continuous banner paper and print all five pages down the first column, then all five in the second column, etc., thus only having to tape the three columns together, rather than each individual page.

I have printer properties set to banner paper but don't see anywhere to change order.

 How do I change page order printing from over/down to down/over? Or is there a better way to accomplish this?

    Thanks! ~Carol in Detroit
