We had a great time, met many interesting folks, and learned a lot too! With some 21 hours of presentations by 9 genealogical speakers, including some of the most reknown professional genealogists from Ireland, England, and the United States, we all learned to be better researchers. An additional 10 hours of TMG-specific presentations (from Bob Velke, John Cardinal, and Lee Hoffman), two cocktail parties, and a movie rounded out the busy 7-day schedule. Aside from all this fun, we successfully skirted Hurricane Noel and had beautiful days of vacation on the tropical islands of St. Thomas and St. Maarten! For detailed reviews, please see these links: Dick Eastman's blog: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genea...t-on-the-w.html Catherine Wilson's blog: http://catherinepalace.blogspot.com Roots Television was also onboard and has published a few of their clips so far, including: http://www.rootstelevision.com/blogs/megan...gical_wave.html and http://www.rootstelevision.com/players/pla...ew-featured.php Yes, of course, we will do it again! Watch this space for an announcement soon about the 2008 Genealogy Conference and Cruise! We hope that you will join us on this very popular annual event! === Salt Lake City TMG Users Group ========== The Salt Lake City (UT) TMG Users Group will meet _tomorrow_, Saturday, Nov 10th, at 3pm at Sweet Library, 445 F. Street, in Salt Lake City. The guest speaker will be Bob Velke, President of Wholly Genes Software who will demonstrate TMG v7 and answer questions from the attendees. For more information, please contact Kim Everingham at kgeveringham@bigfoot.com or (801) 918-5220. === Sentence Structure Forum ============== Pursuant to a request during one of the public TMG chats (see below), a special section was created on the Wholly Genes Community Forum for the discussion of TMG sentence structures. The new forum, moderated by Teresa Ghee Eliott, already contains many sample sentences and discussions about custom event types, roles, styles, and other strategies for customizing narrative reports. If you generate narrative reports from your TMG data, you'll learn a lot from this new forum! To read or participate in the discussion, please visit: http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?showforum=109 === NEW: Probate Records of New Hampshire === The following major new release from our sister company, Archive CD Books USA, supports full-text search of nine volumes (6151 pages!) and will be critical addition to the bookshelf for anyone who is doing early New England research: Albert Stillman Batchellor et al., eds., PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 1635-1771 (9 VOLUMES), (1907-1941) 2007 $59.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0291 These nine volumes gather in one place all known probate records for the Province of New Hampshire from its earliest settlement until the establishment of counties in 1771. Transcripts or abstracts are provided for all documents, which have been collected from several colonial probate jurisdictions. Prior to 1641, the four towns of Portsmouth, Dover, Hampton and Exeter, which later formed the Province of New Hampshire, were independent settlements. Between 1641 and 1643, these towns came under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts Bay Colony, where they remained until 1679. In that year the Province of New Hampshire was formed, and all probate records were recorded at the province level until 1771, when the five original counties (Rockingham, Hillsborough, Strafford, Cheshire and Grafton) were erected. Prior to 1771, most of the probate records for New Hampshire were filed at the province level, but many were located elsewhere. From 1643 to 1679, the four New Hampshire towns were part of old Norfolk County, Massachusetts, and those records have been scoured for New Hampshire probate records. Other New Hampshire probate records were located in the files of Essex and Suffolk counties in Massachusetts and York County in what would become Maine. The editors have provided full, verbatim abstracts for all wills and for some other important documents, such as estate distributions. Other documents, including especially probate inventories, are presented as brief abstracts. When no citation for a document is provided, the assumption is that that document is in the original province files. Complete volume and page citations are provided for documents found only in the province record books, or in the files and records of other jurisdictions. Some of the volumes have introductory matter describing in more detail the preparation of the material for publication. The introduction to the ninth volume includes a list of all New Hampshire counties, followed by a list of all New Hampshire towns, with their dates of incorporation, and the county or counties within which the town fell. All volumes conclude with an every-name index. The CD includes high-quality images of every page as originally published (not just a transcript) and is fully searchable using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 5 or later recommended) on any Windows, Macintosh, or Unix computer. The data on this CD is completely self-contained, and requires no installation. === HALF PRICE: Video Training for TMG - Intermediate (VHS) === Just $7.98 (originally $14.95). This training video on VHS tape introduces the intermediate TMG user to a variety of concepts and features, including custom screen layouts, the Image window, the Project Explorer, Focus Groups, filtering, timelines, the multimedia (exhibit) log, the Research Log, Advanced Data Entry mode, and report options. It is narrated by Bob Velke, President of Wholly Genes Software, and lasts approximately 1.5 hours. This VHS tape has been discontinued in favor of the DVD so the sale price is only valid while our limited supplies last. For more information, please see: http://www.whollygenes.com/intvhs.htm === New Data CDs from Ireland ============== The following new data CDs from Ireland are now available from WhollyGenes.com: CENSUS OF IRELAND, CO. GALWAY 1871 STATISTICAL ABSTRACTS $21.49 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=IE0029 Printed in Dublin for Her Majesty's Stationary Office by Alexander Thom of Dublin and published in 1874, the statistical abstracts for the 1871 Census of Ireland for the county and town of Galway provides incredibly detailed and fascinating statistical material on this county. While most genealogists and historians in Ireland will be familiar with the manuscript 1901 and 1911 Censuses of Ireland detailing households and the individuals contained therein, the statistical data that was gathered, analysed and published in tabular form is often easily overlooked. (more...) ENGLISH GOLDSMITHS AND THEIR MARKS, 2ND ED., 1921 $35.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...S&p=IET0072 The short title of Sir Charles James Jackson's incredible publication, English Goldsmiths and their Marks, belies the true extent of this monumental book. Published in London in 1921, this incredibly learned tomb extends to more than 750 pages and its full title provides a much better idea of its scope: English Goldsmiths & their Marks: A History of the Goldsmiths and Plate Workers of England, Scotland and Ireland with over 13,000 Produced in Facsimile from Authentic Examples of Plate and Tables of Date-Letter and other Hall-Marks used in the Assay Offices of the United Kingdom. (more...) STATISTICAL SURVEY OF THE COUNTY OF TYRONE, 1802 $29.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...S&p=IET0074 The Irish Statistical Survey was carried out under the direction of the Royal Dublin Society. Each county was surveyed with the aim of determining the 'actual state, capabilities and defects of agriculture, manufactures and rural economy'. In practice the surveys contained a vast quantity of local information on almost every aspect of the county surveyed. Because these studies were carried out under central direction the quality of the information provided is good, and given their early date, they remain an invaluable source for the study of each county. HENDERSON'S BELFAST DIRECTORY 1850 (ANTRIM) $29.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...S&p=IET0076 John Henderson's Belfast Directory of 1850 focuses on the actual city of Belfast, unlike the later version of 1856, which covers all of Ulster. Spread over four hundred pages Henderson provides a street directory, alphabetical list of the inhabitants and a trade directory of the city, amounting to approximately 16,000 names. There are also details on some of the surrounding villages. Henderson also provided detailed information on the post service, as well as information on County Antrim. (more...) DENVIR'S THE IRISH IN BRITAIN, 1892 (MIGRATION RECORDS) $29.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...S&p=IET0077 This extraordinary book was published in 1892 by the Liverpool author, journalist and political activist John Denvir. To this day it remains one of the most important sources we have about the nineteenth century Irish, as witnessed by its continued inclusion on university reading lists. The number of Irish people in Britain grew dramatically in the 1800s, especially in Liverpool. In 1841 over 50,000 Liverpudlians were Irish-born, which had increased to over 70,000 in 1881. These Irish settlers generally came looking for work, or to migrate further to the US but ran out of money. (more...) SLATER'S ROYAL NATIONAL DIRECTORY OF IRELAND, 1894: COMPENDIUM OF ALL SECTIONS $72.49 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...S&p=IET0084 Slater's Royal National Directory of Ireland was published in two volumes in Manchester and London in 1894 and encompasses almost 3,000 pages of text, and more than 250,000 names. Information contained in the Directory is subdivided into provinces and further subdivided into provinces with entire sections given over to the cities of Belfast and Dublin, and extended sub-sections for Cork, Limerick and Galway. Doe, ed., THE RECORD OF BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS IN THE TOWN OF FRANKLIN, FROM 1778 TO 1872, (1898) 2007 $12.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0298 The editor of this volume, who was town clerk of Franklin, has transcribed all vital records for the town from its organization in 1778 until 1872. Prior to 1778 Franklin had been part of the town of Wrentham, so most of the families seen in the early years of these records had roots in Wrentham. Unlike so many of the published Massachusetts town vital records, this volume goes well beyond 1850, and so much further into the period of centralized recording. After 1845, the records were entered on printed forms, which required much more information than had usually been entered in the town books before that date. Thus, for the years from 1845, the marriage and death records will always have the names of the parents, which was generally not the case before 1845. (more...) Mary Pelham Hill, ed., VITAL RECORDS OF TOPSHAM, MAINE, TO THE YEAR 1892, 2 VOLUMES, (1929-30) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0394 Topsham, Maine, a town in Sagadahoc County, not far from Bath, was organized in 1717 and incorporated in 1764. The editor of this volume has collected town, church, cemetery and private records (such as Bible entries) from the earliest years and combined them into a single alphabetic sequence. Although this volume is organized much like the official series of published Massachusetts vital records, it differs from those volumes by carrying the records through to 1892, rather than stopping at 1850. The first volume contains birth records, while the second includes marriages and deaths. The second volume, however, begins with a section of additional birth records that were not gathered in time to appear in the first volume. The following summary was written by Robert Charles Anderson, FASG: NEW ENGLAND MIGRATION - THE COLLECTED WORKS OF CHARLES EDWARD BANKS, (1929-1937) 2007. In the early years of the twentieth century, Charles Edward Banks collected information on all the participants in the Great Migration from old England to New England, from 1620 to 1640. The results of his labors are the four volumes gathered on this CD, presenting this information in various ways. "Planters of the Commonwealth" arranges the immigrants according to the vessel on which they sailed to New England, where this is known. "The Topographical Dictionary" organizes the settlers by their county and parish of English origin. "Pilgrim Fathers" and "The Winthrop Fleet" focus on two of the most celebrated groups of immigrants, the settlers of Plymouth in the 1620s and the passengers to Massachusetts Bay in 1630. Taken together, these volumes set forth the best information on the settlers of New England available three-quarters of a century ago. They remain of great value to New England genealogists and should be consulted at the beginning of any research project. The full text of all four books in this compilation, totaling more than 1000 pages, can be searched at the same time and supports AND/OR, word proximity, and other powerful searching methods. The compilation price of $38.88 reflects 40% off the combined retail price of the individual books if purchased separately. For more information, please visit: http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0402 === TMG Users Groups wanted ==================== The last issue of the newsletter referred to the official list of TMG Users Groups (http://www.WhollyGenes.com/forums.htm'>http://www.WhollyGenes.com/forums.htm) and then said: "If you don't find a users group in your area, however, then there may be others like you. Neal Hanaford, compiler, MEREDITH, N.H.: ANNALS AND GENEALOGIES (DOWNLOAD), (1932) 2007 $24.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0214-DL The compiler has brought together historical sketches relating to the town of Meredith, New Hampshire, and has combined these annals with extensive genealogies of the families of the town, gathered from a large number of local correspondents. The volume concludes with records of Meredith marriages. The area that became the town of Meredith was surveyed in 1748 and was incorporated in 1768. In 1855 a portion of Meredith was set off as Laconia and in 1873 another section of the town was included in Center Harbor. The historical section of this volume includes lists of early proprietors and Revolutionary War soldiers. (more...) Samuel Orcutt and Ambrose Beardsley, THE HISTORY OF THE OLD TOWN OF DERBY, CONNECTICUT, 1642-1880 (DOWNLOAD), (1880) 2007 $24.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0255-DL Orcutt and Beardsley compiled a comprehensive history of the town of Derby from before its founding to the year 1880, including a lengthy section on the Indians of the region. They added to the main account a section of biographies and genealogies, as well as material on Derby's daughter towns. After an extensive introductory section on the "Indian History" of the territory that became Derby, the authors cover the history of Derby itself in chapters that are sometimes chronological and sometimes topical, with strong emphasis on the many commercial enterprises initiated in the town. All the subjects discussed are illustrated by verbatim extracts from the town, church or other official records. (more...) Benjamin W. Dwight, THE HISTORY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN DWIGHT OF DEDHAM, MASS., 2 VOLUMES (DOWNLOAD), (1874) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0260-DL Dwight prepared a massive, comprehensive compilation of the descendants in all lines of John Dwight of Dedham, Massachusetts, and of his brother Timothy Dwight of the nearby town of Medfield. The two volumes include information on more than eight thousand direct descendants of these two immigrants. Most of this work covers the descendants of John Dwight, since the family of Timothy Dwight daughtered out within a few generations. The author went far beyond the usual scope of genealogies published in the late nineteenth century, by tracing lines of descent through daughters as well as sons, and also by including extensive information on the families of men and women who married into the Dwight family. YEAR BOOK OF THE ILLINOIS SOCIETY OF THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (DOWNLOAD), (1896) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0306-DL Published six years after the founding of the Illinois chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, this volume contains information on about four hundred members who were then active. To be a member, one had to be a lineal descendant of someone who had served loyally during the Revolution. The volume opens with lists of the officers of the Illinois society for each of its years of existence, along with the state constitution and bylaws, and a brief history of the Illinois society. This is followed by a list of the current officers of the national society, and the national constitution and bylaws. (more...) Thomas W. Bicknell, SOWAMS: WITH ANCIENT RECORDS OF SOWAMS AND PARTS ADJACENT (DOWNLOAD), (1908) 2007 $14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0307-DL Bicknell transcribes and analyzes the records for Sowams, a tract of land then in Plymouth Colony, on the northeast edge of Narragansett Bay, purchased from the local Native Americans in early 1653, a parcel of land that comprised the major part of what is now the town of Barrington, Rhode Island. The core of this volume is the transcription of the proprietors' records for the Sowams land, from a volume which had been mislaid but was found by the author and restored to the town of Barrington. The records covered here run from 1653 to 1797, and begin with the transactions between the purchasers (all from Plymouth Colony) and the Indians. In addition, there are records of the agreements with the town of Rehoboth, within whose boundaries the land originally fell. Of most importance are the records of the divisions of the Sowams land to the individual proprietors. (more...) Lois Kimball Mathews, THE EXPANSION OF NEW ENGLAND: THE SPREAD OF NEW ENGLAND SETTLEMENT AND INSTITUTIONS TO THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER, 1620-1865 (DOWNLOAD), (1909) 2007 $12.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0320-DL The author narrates the chronology of the settlement of New England in the colonial period and then the migration of New Englanders and their culture to the west and south in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The story is illustrated with many carefully drawn and informative maps. Mathews begins with the small number of settlements along the coast of New England in the 1620s, and then describes the rapid establishment of new towns resulting from the Great Migration of the 1630s. She goes on to show the further expansion of settlement as the population grew by natural means. She pays special attention to the reversals in the numbers of settlements consequent to the various conflicts with the Indians. (more...) Eliphalet Merrill and Phinehas Merrill, Esq., GAZETTEER OF THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE (DOWNLOAD), (1817) 2007 $12.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0335-DL This is the first gazetteer ever published for the State of New Hampshire (1817) and a wonderful resource for researchers because it identifies many places by names which have otherwise been lost to history. Its three parts offer "A comprehensive Geographical and Statistical view of the whole State," "A description of each county, town, or location in the State; also of its lakes, rivers, ponds, and mountains," and "Topographical and Statistical Tables." In addition to a detailed history and physical description of each place, this very early work identifies many of the earliest settlers of the State with a strong focus on churches and their early ministers. For each of these is listed the population in 1870 and the names of town officers, justices, professional and business men, including manufacturers, merchants, lawyers, postmasters, physicians, and ministers, among others. A pocket calendar includes some handwritten memoranda from the original owner which are preserved as a matter of interest. (more...) R.A. Campbell, CAMPBELL'S GAZETTEER OF MISSOURI (DOWNLOAD), (1874) 2007 $24.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0354-DL Although described as a gazetteer, this volume is also a guide to the state detailing its physical, commercial and manufacturing attributes. The material is presented in alphabetical order by county. A brief history of the beginning of the settlement in the county (often listing the names of the first settlers) sets the stage. The reader is also provided with population figures taken from the federal censuses, a description of the county's physical features including waterways and land forms, its agricultural production, manufacturing interests, wealth, exports, railroads, and educational facilities. Have you ever wondered why your ancestor decided to move-and even more importantly why did he choose ____? How to books are not a modern phenomena. Real estate brochures are not new. This 1817 volume provides a description of the western states and territories-one state so new it is still unnamed-and discussions of soil, climate, diseases, vegetable mineral and animal productions as well as extensive descriptions of the rivers, lakes, roads and other items that impact travel. We learn about the price and quality of the land, forts and Indian tribes in the area, settlement patterns, and trade and manufacturing opportunities. (more...) Tracking an ancestor's migration path can be extremely difficult-small villages and towns mentioned in family stories frequently no longer exist. Early published gazetteers can sometimes solve the problem. They can also provide some interesting facts about the area. Did you know there were 28 towns called Union in Indiana in 1850? There are two Auroras-the one on the Ohio River "recently" (1850) suffered from the ravages of cholera. Bartholomew County's population increased from 10,042 in 1840 to over 15,000 by 1848. In 1850 it had 10 tanneries, a distillery and six water-powered and 5 steam-powered flour mills. (more...) Portraits of Society Presidents are included. In order to become a member of this society, a woman must have "descended from an ancestor who rendered service between 1607 and 1700 according to the eligibility list." Oklahoma was admitted as the 46th State of the Union in 1907 and included the bulk of Indian Territory. Despite its name, whites comprised more than three quarters of the population of Indian Territory at the turn of the century. The remainder was roughly split between Indians and blacks who were former slaves of the Indians or their descendants. Many users were disappointed to hear that the second printing of "Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist" (frequently mentioned on discussion lists as "GTM") is out of stock. This popular book was written by many well-known TMG experts and edited by Lee Hoffman, the owner of TMGTips.com and administrator of the TMG-L mailing list. Lee tells us that a new edition of the book isn't expected until some time next year. In the meantime, however, and even after the release of TMG v7, the current printing of GTM is one of the best ways to learn the gritty details of controlling imports and exports, designing filters, constructing narratives, formatting source citations, manipulating report options, generating wall charts, and customizing the program, among other intermediate and advanced features. Since it is written by users like yourself (not programmers), it uses language that you'll understand and it includes practical strategies to using TMG with real-life data. Now upon popular demand, Lee has released an electronic version of "Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist." So you can carry a copy of this great book with you everywhere that your laptop goes! It even includes fixes to the errata that have been discovered since the paper printing. Best of all, it supports a full-text search -- so you can quickly find every reference to the features that interest you. Even if you own a paper copy of this book, the electronic version of GTM will be a great reference tool. A downloadable version is just $21.95 and the CD is $24.95 (with optional download). As above, you can even get free shipping of the CD version until Sept 3rd! For more information or to place your order, please visit: http://www.WhollyGenes.com/gtm.htm === Do you want to start a TMG Users Group? ========= There are more than 65 TMG Users Groups around the world, including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Norway, Australia, and New Zealand. For the older and larger towns especially, the compiler has embellished the historical account of the town with extracts from the town records and, in later years, lengthy passages from the leading newspapers. Also for the earlier towns, Barber has included lists of the earliest proprietors. (more...) The volume opens with a narrative history of the settlement of New England, with emphasis on the Pilgrims and Plymouth Colony, on the leaders in other New England colonies, and on prominent men of the Revolutionary era. Maria Whitman Bryant, GENEALOGY OF EDWARD WINSLOW OF THE MAYFLOWER AND HIS DESCENDANTS FROM 1620 TO 1865, (1915) 2007 $9.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0283 This volume provides biographical and genealogical information on those descendants of Governor Edward Winslow of the Mayflower who remained in New England, including many descendants in the female lines. There is also additional information on the families of the spouses of many of the Winslow men. Although this book was published in 1915, most of the data were collected by the mother of the compiler, beginning as early as 1828. She would, therefore, have interviewed surviving members of the family who had been born in the middle of the eighteenth century, thus providing valuable information on the Revolutionary period, much of which would not have been recorded elsewhere. 7. Version 7

Hi everyone, We're back from the FGS Conference in Fort Wayne. Thanks to all those who stopped by to say hello or to see the preview of TMG v7. Following is a list of the major points that I discussed or demonstrated as planned for TMG v7. Note that I didn't discuss all that we have planned and circumstances may change to prevent/delay the implementation of some of the features which I demonstrated. In other words, I hope that you find this list interesting but don't interpret it as any form of commitment on my part. As usual, most of the planned new features were suggested by TMG users like you. - TMG v7 will be native to Windows Vista and XP. Some older operating systems may be supported and a full list will be posted with the final release. - Beginner buttons on the Tag Box and a Preference option to turn them off. - Preference option to turn off the memo and source columns in the Tag Box. - Revised Exhibit Log interface with buttons for major features. - Exhibit Highlighting (as discussed by Lee Hoffman). - Reminder field for Tag Types, Sources, and Source Types that are visible during data entry. - New window resizing method and a Preference option to use the old method. - Associates Window (suggested on TMG-L as a "Witness Window" but with expanded features). - An option to assign layouts to custom toolbar buttons. - Import/export sources. - Import/export source types. - Relationship Calculator supports relationships through marriage. - Multi-level sorts on the Picklist and Project Explorer. - Sort the Research Log by task keyword. - Check for duplicate people during the Add Person process (and many Preference options to control the duplicate-checking rules). - Support for the Citation Memo in embedded citations. - A sentence code to suppress all punctuation. - A sentence code to concatenate tags to form a single sentence. - An "escape" code that will allow memos to include characters that TMG would otherwise interpret as special control characters (like {,[, - A sentence preview button. - List of Exhibits report - Columnar List of Citations report. - New import formats. - New filter options. - A variety of new right-click options to aid navigation and data entry as suggested by users. I do NOT intend to expand/explain these features or discuss our plans beyond the list above. Rather, I am going to focus on development. Those who attended the demonstration are free to comment on what they saw. Beyond that, I'm afraid that you'll need to wait for the official release. A release date has not been (and will not be) announced beyond "later this year" as stated in the newsletter. There will be a modest charge for the update but it has not been announced either. Those who purchased TMG v6 after 17 Aug 2007 (or 90 days before release of TMG v7, whichever is earlier) will get a free update to TMG v7. Cheers,

ILLUSTRATED HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE STATE OF INDIANA, (1874) 2007 $39.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0505 As indicated by its name, this huge "Illustrated Historical Atlas" of Indiana includes much more than its 150 beautifully-detailed 19th century hand-colored maps of the cities and counties of Indiana. An extensive narrative history of the state and its many counties includes, in many cases, a description and history of the earliest settlements and settlers. Of special interest to family history researchers, this volume includes detailed biographical sketches of about 30 prominent citizens, as well as a list of more than 8000 individual patrons of the atlas from across the State, listing in each case his/her name, city of residence, business, birth place, and the date of immigration to (or birth in) Indiana. A variety of additional plates show the portraits or residences of dozens of citizens. The book continues with a list of post offices across the United States, various census statistics, and an extensive business directory of Indiana. Each map can be displayed in high resolution and enlarged to 800% or more on the screen without loss of clarity (depending on your hardware). Printouts from this product include an obtrusive copyright watermark. Quality print reproductions can be ordered from an inexpensive map-printing service using a link on each map page. The DVD includes high-quality images of every map as originally published. The additional text pages are fully searchable using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 5 or later recommended) on any Windows, Macintosh, or Unix computer. (The maps are not searchable). The data on this DVD is completely self-contained, and requires no installation. === New U.S. Data CDs ========================= The following new searchable data CDs are now available from www.WhollyGenes.com: Jacob Piatt Dunn, INDIANA AND INDIANANS: A HISTORY OF ABORIGINAL AND TERRITORIAL INDIANA AND THE CENTURY OF STATEHOOD, (1919) 2007 $24.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0262 Frequently cited in biographies of the Indianans, Dunn's five-volume history of Indiana is both thorough and readable. Beginning with prehistoric times, the writer carries the reader through each era from Indian settlement to the 1900s. Reachers stopping to read a particular entry are likely to find themselves completing the chapter before moving on to the next item of interest. The first 8 chapters provide a chronological history. These are follow by separate chapters on the medical history; education; transportation, commerce and industry; charities and correction; temperance; and New Harmony. The second volume (more...) THE INDIANA GAZETTEER AND TOPOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF THE STATE OF INDIANA, 3RD EDITION, (1850) 2007 $24.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0364 Lost in Indiana? Tracking an ancestor's migration path can be extremely difficult-small villages and towns mentioned in family stories frequently no longer exist. The bulk of the book, almost 300 pages is devoted to the description of cities, towns and counties. (more...) William L. Alexander, LIST OF EX-SOLDIERS, SAILORS AND MARINES LIVING IN IOWA, (1886) 2007 $24.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0352 Tracking migrating ancestors is often an exercise in frustration. One tool often used is tracking neighbors, an infrequently used, but often successful tool is tracking military service. This volume authorized by the Iowa General Assembly in 1884, lists U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps veterans of the War of 1812, the Black Hawk and Mexican wars, and the War of the Rebellion. Although directed to place individuals in alphabetical order, the editor chose to list those serving in the War of the Rebellion and the Mexican War, by the state and unit in which they enlisted and served and alphabetically thereunder. The state unit in which they served is noted for those with War of 1812 service. This allows the researcher not only to identify the state of origin of his ancestor or a collateral relative, but the names of other individuals who served with him. While almost 17,000 of the those listed were from Iowa, 3200 were from Ohio, 1600 from Pennsylvania, 1700 from New York and 14 were from Colorado. (more...) N. Also included in many cases are the early settlers or settlements, churches, schools, streams, mountains, and other physical features, as well as the churches, businesses, schools, banks, and other economic characteristics of the area. The original color township map from this book is rarely found in any form but is included on this CD in beautiful high-resolution. Its details include "Streams, Roads, Towns, Post Offices, County Seats, Works of Internal Improvement, &c, &c" as of 1855. Although copyrighted in Chicago, this book was printed in Philadelphia which may explain why it was not included in the Ante-Fire Imprints Inventory. (more...) R.A. The reader is also provided with population figures taken from the federal censuses, a description of the county's physical features including waterways and land forms, its agricultural production, manufacturing interests, wealth, exports, railroads, and educational facilities. Henry Gannett, A GAZETTEER OF INDIAN TERRITORY, (1905) 2007 $9.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0601 This booklet is packed with information about "Indian Territory," the area that is described in 1905 as "bounded on the north by Kansas, on the east by Arkansas, on the south by Texas, and on the west by Oklahoma." Oklahoma was admitted as the 46th State of the Union in 1907 and included the bulk of Indian Territory. Despite its name, whites comprised more than three quarters of the population of Indian Territory at the turn of the century. The remainder was roughly split between Indians and blacks who were former slaves of the Indians or their descendants. The Indian population was largely comprised of the Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Choctaw, and Chickasaw which came to be known as the "Five Civilized Tribes." The “Digested Summary and Alphabetical List of Private Claims Which Have Been Presented to the House of Representatives” represents nearly one hundred years of claims by citizens of the United States to their government for reimbursement for property or expenses. Referencing approximately 100,000 names, this unique collection spans the period 1789-1882 and includes petitions for a wide variety of personal reimbursements, most notably in relation to the acts of the government during the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican-American War, the Civil War, and various Indian engagements. Barbara Vines Little, Genealogical Consultant for Archive CD Books USA, noted that the collection contains claims for “restitution for property lost, damaged or destroyed due to government actions (or inaction); bounty land; land titles; patent extensions; payment for services rendered; and a myriad of other personal items that its citizens wanted the government to fix.” “No claim was too large or too small,” said Ms Little. “One woman applied for relief for loss of husband in public service. Jonathan Painter, a black man wanted payment for services as a spy in 1812, and J.R. O’Bierne wanted part of the reward for capturing John Wilkes Booth.” Many of these claims never became law but, as Ms. Little explained, “they generated paper—paper that provides details about our ancestors. Locating your ancestor in one of these volumes will start you on a whole new adventure in your search for your ancestors.” “There is no other known searchable source for this complete set of five volumes, including high-quality images of the original pages,” said Bob Velke, President of Archive CD Books USA. It is, therefore, a vast untapped resource for researchers of 18th and 19th century. “Best of all,” said Mr. Velke, "you can search all five volumes at once using advanced search capabilities which include single words or phrases, proximity searches, and Boolean (and/or) searches.” For a limited time, this major new collection is available for the introductory price of just $19.97 which is 50% off the regular retail price of $39.95. For more information about “Digested Summary and Alphabetical List of Private Claims,” please visit: http://www.WhollyGenes.com/privateclaims.htm === Updated: GNIS web searching ==================== Recent changes to the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) have invalidated the related links within TMG and Family Tree SuperTools. You can easily update those links, however, in order to continue making use of this very helpful database of place information: 1) To update the Web menu: Access Web menu > Places databases > Customize and change the URL for "United States (GNIS)" to: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic Save those changes and then access the service through Web > Places databases > United States (GNIS). 2) To update the "Look up this place on the web" button on the Tag Entry screen: Download this file and unzip it into the program folder: http://www.WhollyGenes.com/files/placeinfo_gnis.zip Then restart TMG and the changes will be applied automatically. === FGS Conference - TMG v7 Demonstrations =========== If you will be in Ft. This is a free update for registered users of v3.x. Following is the offical announcement: El Dorado Springs , MO - Northern Hills Software is pleased to announce the release of Pocket Genealogist Version 3.10. In a nutshell, this version includes usability changes, new screen sizes for Windows Mobile 6, and support for Smartphones (Windows Mobile devices without a touchscreen - called Windows Mobile Standard with Version 6.) "We're especially excited about the Smartphone support since those devices make up a significant portion of the current handheld device market," said Laura Phillips, vice president and business manager for Northern Hills Software. "We've supported the Windows Mobile Phone Edition since it first came out, but the old Smartphones with no touchscreen just weren't suitable for a sophisticated application like Pocket Genealogist. However, with the tremendous improvements we've seen recently in Smartphone screens and navigation, we're finally comfortable making the transition." This release also includes better support for the use of Pocket PCs without a stylus, better Windows Mobile 6 support, and many other improvements. It is a free upgrade for users who previously purchased Pocket Genealogist 3.x. About Northern Hills Software Northern Hills Software LLC, a Missouri company, released the first version of Pocket Genealogist in 2000. Since then Pocket Genealogist has become a world leader in handheld genealogy software with registered users in 50 countries. Offering the most extensive data support available in a handheld genealogy program, Pocket Genealogist is extensively tested for superior data import and compatibility with popular desktop genealogy programs. Book summaries are by Robert Charles Anderson, FASG. LIST OF CITY AND COUNTY EMPLOYEES, WITH THEIR RESIDENCES AND SALARIES, ETC, (1888) 2007 $16.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0254 Driven by local politics, a committee appointed by the Boston City Council compiled a detailed list of all those individuals who were employed by the city in 1888. The result is a collection of detailed information on thousands of men and women, from the mayor to the lamplighters and streetsweepers. The list is arranged by department, beginning with the mayor's office. Each entry provides the name of the employee, his or her birthplace, the date of appointment to the office, the employee's residence at the time of appointment and also in 1888, and the rate of pay at the time of appointment and in 1888. For example, within the Health Department, "Cleary, Thomas, Ash-driver," was born in Ireland and was appointed in 1856. His residence in 1856 was Hamburg Street, Ward 10, and in that year he was paid $1.12 a day. In 1888 he lived at 6 Chadwick Court, Ward 20, and received $2.00 a day. (more...) Thomas W. Bicknell, SOWAMS: WITH ANCIENT RECORDS OF SOWAMS AND PARTS ADJACENT, (1908) 2007 $14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0307 Bicknell transcribes and analyzes the records for Sowams, a tract of land then in Plymouth Colony, on the northeast edge of Narragansett Bay, purchased from the local Native Americans in early 1653, a parcel of land that comprised the major part of what is now the town of Barrington, Rhode Island. (more...) Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch, SUFFOLK SURNAMES, SECOND EDITION, (1861) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0318 Bowditch created a file of all surnames he encountered in the Suffolk County, Massachusetts, deed and probate records from the 1640s to the 1820s, to which he added lists of surnames from other sources. He organized these surnames into various categories, to which he added his personal analysis. Some of the categories employed by Bowditch are similar to those used by modern scholars of English surnames, such as "Trades and Occupations," "Relationship and Affection" and "Mental Qualities." Other categories are more idiosyncratic and amusing, such as "Diseases and Medicines; Drinking Names," "Bodily Peculiarities" and "Articles of Dress and Ornament." The volume concludes with a complete index of the thousands of surnames included in the compilation. Bowditch was clearly still collecting surnames at this final stage of production of his book, as there are dozens of surnames which make their first appearance in the index, where they are explained in footnotes. SOCIETY OF COLONIAL DAUGHTERS OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY: ORGANIZATION, CONSTITUTION, BY-LAWS, MEMBERSHIP, (1923) 2007 $21.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0372 This official compilation provides organizational and constitutional information on the Society of the Colonial Daughters of the Seventeenth Century, as well as data on members as of 1923 from three state societies: New York, Missouri and Rhode Island. Portraits of Society Presidents are included. In order to become a member of this society, a woman must have "descended from an ancestor who rendered service between 1607 and 1700 according to the eligibility list." A list of the varieties of service includes both civil and military offices, at the colony, county and town levels. The members are listed alphabetically for each state, giving their residence in 1923 and the list of ancestors from whom they descend. For each ancestor there is a statement of the form "Seventh in descent from John Needles." The intervening generations are not supplied. The volume closes with a list of ancestors claimed by the members, giving the qualifying service for each (more...) === TMG Companion Products ====================== The following companion products which were developed for TMG users like you: Video training for TMG on DVD Getting Started, Intermediate, Advanced, or Expert See http://www.WhollyGenes.com/videotapes.htm Second Site Web site construction tools for your TMG data. Among other things, these sample filters will show you how to search for: o people who have any event in a certain place o people who have incomplete tasks o people who have no primary parents (i.e., an end-of-line person) o end of line ancestors of a specific person o people who were edited after a specific date o people whose birth year is within a certain range o citations for a specific source o tasks for a specific repository by id number o list of events in a specific place o men who might have registered for ww1 draft ...and dozens of others. As you will see, most of these samples use filter values of "[?]" in order to prompt you to fill in the specific values when the filter is executed. This makes the filters much more flexible. To use these sample filters, download this file: http://www.WhollyGenes.com/files/samplefilters.zip and then unzip it into the folder which contains your project(s). Then run TMG, select a List of People report (for instance) from the Report menu, select "Filtered Group", and select a sample filter from the drop-downlist. Click on to see how the filter is defined. Many of these sample filters are drawn from a presentation by Janis Parkison Rodriguez to the Arlington Roots Users Group (RUG) on 13 May 2006. Her presentation described her favorite filters plus those of some other TMG users. In relation to her presentation, Janis wrote two articles for the RUG: 1) "Favorite Filters": A good supplement to the download mentioned above. It details many of those filters and some others. 2) "1880 Census Candidates Using Flags and Book Manager": The filters in this article are not included in the download mentioned above because they make use of a custom flag. You can add that flag as described in the article, however, and learn how to harness the power of the Book Manager too. The Arlington RUG is perhaps the largest TMG users group in the world and an annual membership (including 12 issues of a great newsletter!) is well worth the price of just $15.00. You can review an index and samples of the RUG newsletter from http://www.rootsusers.org and that will surely convince you to send the modest membership fee to them. But, while newsletters and presentation handouts are typically only available to members, the RUG has generously made Janis' two filter articles mentioned above available to non-members for a limited time from this link: http://www.rootsusers.org/downloads/presen...s.htm#20060613a === Updated: QuickSheet: Citing Online Historical Resources - Just $4.50 === "Quicksheet: Citing Online Historical Resources" by Elizabeth Shown Mills is a popular four-page laminated reference sheet summarizes the basic principals of citing your online sources of genealogical data and provides example citations for the most common record types. A revised version of the QuickSheet was released recently and is now available from WhollyGenes.com. The price is just $4.50 (+s/h) which, like all of the genealogy books in our store, is 25% less than you'll find it in most other stores. This 2007 revision of the QuickSheet updates all the URLs and has some other minor revisions that coincide with Ms Mills' new book, "Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace," which is expected to be available by August 1st. (NOTE: when that book is available, you can also expect to find it for 25% OFF the suggested retail price from WhollyGenes.com. Tell your friends!) === Out of Stock: Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist === The very popular companion book, Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist, is out of stock and is not longer available. The compiler, Lee Hoffman, tells us that he expects to release an updated version of the book at a later date. O'Callaghan and Berthold Fernow, transcribers, MUSTER ROLLS OF NEW YORK PROVINCIAL TROOPS. 1755-1764. COLLECTIONS OF THE NEW YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY FOR THE YEAR 1891, (1892) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0296 The transcribers have presented in this volume verbatim transcripts of all surviving New York muster rolls for the Seven Years' War (the last phase of the French and Indian Wars) from 1755 to 1764 (except for the year 1757, for which records are missing), arranging them in convenient tabular form. All muster rolls include the date of the roll, the name of the unit, the names of all the men in the unit and (usually) the rank of every member of the unit. Many of the rolls incorporate additional information, much of it of great genealogical value, including age, birthplace, occupation, date of enlistment and rate of pay. A relatively small number of the rolls also give even more personal data, such as height, complexion and hair color. (more...) Mary E. The volume concludes with records of Meredith marriages. The area that became the town of Meredith was surveyed in 1748 and was incorporated in 1768. In 1855 a portion of Meredith was set off as Laconia and in 1873 another section of the town was included in Center Harbor. (more...) The first part of the volume covers the usual topics, such as the native Americans, early settlement, granting of land, military affairs, and the like. In this section are found lists of town officers, freemen and those who served in King Philip's War and the Revolution. Deane provides citations to town or colony records for much of this material. A large and important section, more than thirty pages, is devoted to an early church schism at Scituate. (more...) William I. NEW SOUTH WALES GOVERNMENT GAZETTE Government Gazettes contain a vast amount of historical and genealogical information. However they are largely an untapped resource. The few complete runs that are available are usually only found in major libraries. And even for researchers who do have access to these the sheer size and extent of the Gazettes is daunting. Now that is all changing - with the publication of the gazettes on affordable and searchable form on CD-ROM. Tens of thousands of ordinary people and localities, small and large, are mentioned EVERY YEAR in Government Gazettes. But they offer researchers much more than simply names and places. They will help you reconstruct events and circumstances in the life of individuals and communities. 1838: http://www.whollygenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...p;p=AU2100-1838 1875: http://www.whollygenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...p;p=AU2100-1875 NEW SOUTH WALES POLICE GAZETTE Police Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes therefore contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else. They include court lists, lists of warrants issued, appointments and changes in the Police Service, lists of Justices of the Pease, lists of arrests and discharges (which include descriptions), escaped prisoners, and missing persons, as well as lists for liquor, wine sellers, tobacco sellers, auctioneers, billiard and poisons licences. 14. Melody, I'm afraid that TMG cannot be configured to assume that there is evidence for a standard flag unless you tell it otherwise. The default values for those flags are "?" and that cannot be changed. As you say, you can create your own flag for that purpose. In v6, you can even disable the standard one so you don't have to look at it -- but you cannot change its name or have another with the same name. More importantly (and the reason I don't recommend it), the program uses the standard Living flag for various purposes (like optional suppression of data for living people for some reports) and it will not use a custom flag for those purposes. You can, however, configure a toolbar button to change all of the instances of Living="?" to Living="N" (or whatever). You can run it periodically to update all of those flags at once. Perhaps better, however, you can put any number of the standard or custom flags directly on the Add Person screen so you can see and modify them all at once when adding a new person. To modify a flag in v6, you can double-click on its name in the flag window. You don't need to put the cursor there first. Hope this helps.

(more...) The entries for the 2885 emigrants are arranged by county, and within each county alphabetically by parish. Each entry also includes the name of the ship on which the emigrant arrived (when known), the first town of residence in New England and the reference supporting the proposed English origin. Moore, A GAZETTEER OF THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, (1823) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0223 This very early gazetteer of New Hampshire offers many references for researchers of the area. Its three parts offer "A comprehensive Geographical and Statistical view of the whole State," "A description of each county, town, or location in the State; also of its lakes, rivers, ponds, and mountains," and "Topographical and Statistical Tables." Walton, WALTON'S VERMONT REGISTER & FARMERS ALMANAC FOR 1879, (1879) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0347 The first part of this rare book is a 19-century business directory of Vermont with the names of all of the towns and post offices in the state. For each of these is listed the population in 1870 and the names of town officers, justices, professional and business men, including manufacturers, merchants, lawyers, postmasters, physicians, and ministers, among others. Ashe in 1891-2. While Dublin City and County are replete with trades' and residential directories from the mid-eighteenth century to the present day, many of the Ireland's other counties are bereft of such directories. Between 1769 and 1894 there have only been fifteen published directories in which all or part of Limerick and Clare have been featured. Of the fifteen published directories, only two, apart from H. & E. Ashe's Directory specifically treat on Limerick City and County as well as County Clare, and as such, this republication will be of particular interest to those who have an interest in these counties. Kilkenny, or to give them their full title: 'At a General Assizes, and General Goal Delivery, held at Grace's Old Castle, Kilkenny, in and for said County, on Wednesday 7th March 1832', was published in Kilkenny City in 1832 by T Shearman, stationer. The Presentments for Kilkenny are a detailed record of the financial transactions and payments made to and from the Grand Jury of County Kilkenny between the Spring Assizes of 1825 and the Summer Assizes of 1832 and as such are a set of early accounts for the forerunner of Kilkenny county council. ENNISKILLEN LONG AGO, 1878 $21.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...S&p=IET0067 The historical development of the town and parish of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh is the subject of this important publication, by W. H. Bradshaw. Bradshaw's opening chapter focuses on the development of Enniskillen town, the principal urban centre in County Fermanagh, straddled between the two Lough Ernes. The town was incorporated in 1612, with William Cole appointed as the first provost. Although the early development of the town is detailed, the part played by the town during the various seventeenth century wars is, unsurprisingly, particularly prominent. So too is the destruction of the town by fire in 1705, when '114 families and their servants suffered very severe losses', which (more...) THE REGISTER OF DERRY CATHEDRAL 1642-1703 $27.49 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...S&p=IET0068 The Parish Register Society of Dublin was established in 1905 for the purpose of transcribing and publishing early Anglican parish registers, and between 1906 and 1915 the Society published twelve volumes of parish registers. Most of the published registers were from parishes in the vicinity of Dublin, and Richard Hayes's transcription of the early registers of Derry Cathedral were the only registers from Ulster to appear in print. After 1915 the Society merged with the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead, and transcribed registers appeared in that Society's journal until 1934. (more...) STATISTICAL SURVEY OF CAVAN, 1802 $27.49 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...S&p=IET0069 In the 1740s the Physico Historical Society of Ireland expressed an ambitious plan to publish a survey of each county in Ireland, although only four surveys (Down, Kerry, Cork and Waterford) ultimately appeared in print. Decades later, the Dublin Society, established in the 1730s, and becoming the Royal Dublin Society in 1820, launched a similar project, which proved considerably more successful. Under this initiative, the first county surveys appeared in 1801, and between that year and 1832, twenty three county surveys were completed. (more...) === Did You Know? ============================== DID YOU KNOW that you can add a new person to your project while adding or editing an event? Just click on the "Add Person" button in the top-right corner of the event (Tag Entry) window. You can use this "Quick Add" screen to add a new person who will then be automatically linked as a principal to the event that is open. DID YOU KNOW that you can get maps of the locations of your ancestors' events? Just open the Tag Entry window for an event and then click on the "Get a map of this place" button in the top-right corner. TMG utilizes free web-based mapping utilities like Google Maps, MapQuest, and TerraServer to provide maps around the world. DID YOU KNOW that you can bookmark a person's record in TMG so that you can easily return to it later? Just press Control+K or access the View menu and choose BookMarks > Bookmark Manager. After adding a person to the list of bookmarks, you can return to him later by clicking on his name in the View > Bookmarks menu. The process is even simpler if you activate the Bookmark toolbar which you'll find on the View > Toolbars menu. DID YOU KNOW that TMG has a feature which analyzes the records for your ancestors and produces a report showing their minimum, maximum, and average age of death? Similar statistics are shown for age at first marriage, age upon the birth of the first and last child, and much more. The feature is called a "Statistical Report" and it is on the Reports menu. It is especially enlightening to filter the report and compare the statistics for different groups of people based on their geography or other characteristics. The report also helps to identify data entry errors or suspicious evidence. DID YOU KNOW you can leave the Focus Group window open while you work in TMG? The Focus Group window is available on the toolbar and it can be used to identify a subset of people whose records you want to examine. Just right-click on a person in the list and choose "Change focus to this person." Best of all, it stays open while you navigate -- just like the Details, Children, and Siblings windows. DID YOU KNOW that you can change the sequence of person images as they print out in narrative reports? First, make sure that "Show Event Exhibits" is unchecked at the bottom of the Exhibit Log. Then simply drag and drop the images with your mouse in order to change their sequence. That sequence will be honored when narrative reports are configured to output all images for people. === TMG Web Sites ============================== The Wholly Genes Community forum includes a message board, answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), links to TMG Users Groups, an event calendar, and many other valuable resources. To access the forum, please visit www.WhollyGenes.com and click on "Support" in the menu. Are you thinking of creating a web site from your TMG data? The forum contains a special section with links to more than 60 web sites that have been created with TMG, Second Site (companion product), or a GEDCOM utility from TMG data. These web sites are created by users and provided to you as a source of ideas and inspiration for how to share your research results with the world. To browse the list of web sites that were created from TMG data, please visit the forum as described above, scroll down to the blue "Other" heading, and then click on "TMG Users' Genealogy Web Sites." Don't confuse this list, however, with the list of TMG "related" web sites. This is a list of users' sites that are _about_ TMG and include tips and hints, utilities, tutorials, and detailed articles about how to use TMG's many features. The list of "TMG-related web sites" is available on the forum under the blue "News and Information" heading under "Other Resources." === TMG Companion Products ====================== The following companion products which were developed for TMG users like you: "Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist" The popular book compiled by Lee Hoffman. A DICTIONARY OF MEDICAL SCIENCE, (1865) 2006 Sale Price=$14.95 (Suggested Retail Price=$19.95) http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0226 This compendious volume is far more than a dictionary, providing a wide range of medical information as it was known at the end of the Civil War. The author has added much to this second edition of his work, and has designed it to be "A French As Well As An English Medical Lexicon." There are many areas of terminology included here, included anatomy, chemistry, herbal medicine, pharmacology, and many more. Latin and French forms of many words are given, and Latin and Greek etymologies are also frequent. There are also unexpected data sets dispersed through the volume in their proper alphabetic place, such as spas and health resorts, both in Europe and in the United States, or the terminology used in various magical systems of healing. Many of the medicines and medical conditions covered by this volume have multiple names, sometimes dozens, in England, French and Latin. Each of these names appears in its proper place in the alphabet, with a cross-reference to the appropriate main entry, where one finds not only the definition but a complete compilation of all the variant names. This feature especially will be very helpful in understanding causes of death as they may be entered in various public and private records. In many instances, the entries carry on for a page or more, providing information that one would expect to find in an encyclopedia rather than a dictionary. For example, the entry for "Artery" covers a page and a half, while the entry for "Cinchona" and its derivatives spans more than a page and describes the many types and uses of the bark of this tree. === National Genealogical Society workshops ============ Would you like to learn all the ins and outs of TMG at a hands-on workshop that is taught by an expert user? The National Genealogical Society (NGS) Conference in Richmond, Virginia is next week (May 16-19th) and there are still a few seats left at the Beginner/Intermediate and Advanced TMG workshops. Bob Velke, President of Wholly Genes Software will be the instructor. Don't miss this rare opportunity to get hands-on instruction on a wide variety of features. For more information, please visit: http://www.NGSGenealogy.org/ === Report samples - Winners! ======================= The last newsletter requested that users submit samples of their favorite customized reports that were created with TMG. We got many great examples using a variety of report types. The one judged most interesting and innovative was a box chart submitted by Keith Hemmelman. Keith created a very interesting box chart which he created by combining three other charts. Keith said, "I had created an 'Ancestor/Descendant' wall chart and had it printed in the online service [http://www.GotCharts.com] and then mounted it in a poster frame and gave it to my parents who were thrilled to receive it." Thanks, Keith, for a job very well done! For all of the details, please visit: http://www.WhollyGenes.com/cruise.htm === New U.S. data CDs ============================ The following new searchable data CDs are now available at www.WhollyGenes.com: John Hayward, THE NEW ENGLAND GAZETTEER; CONTAINING DESCRIPTIONS OF ALL THE STATES, COUNTIES AND TOWNS IN NEW ENGLAND: ALSO DESCRIPTIONS OF ALL THE STATES, COUNTIES, AND TOWNS IN NEW ENGLAND AND FASHIONABLE RESORTS WITHIN THAT TERRITORY, ALPHABETICALLY ARRANGED, (1839) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0243 This volume combines in one alphabetical listing an exhaustive survey of the political divisions, from town to state, and the physiographic features of all six New England states. The entries range from a paragraph to several pages, covering location, population, history and commercial activities. This reference work describes New England at an important transition point in its economic history. First, by 1839 the use of water power for large-scale manufacturing had been on the rise for a few decades. As a result, Hayward devotes special attention to the number of mills in each town and city, and the products produced by these businesses. In association with this, the author also takes care to describe the watercourses that drained each town, thus supplying the water power. Likewise, in his descriptions of rivers he traces each from its headwaters to its outlet, listing each town through which it passed. Second, the railroad age had begun just a few years before this compilation was made, and in his preface to the volume Hayward shows that he was fully aware of the impact this new means of transportation would have on the geograpy of New England. As yet, however, relatively few towns and cities were served by railroads. As a result, this gazetteer provides a snapshot of New England just before the tremendous changes brought about by the synergies of water power and the railroad. John C. Pease and John M. Niles, GAZETTEER OF THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT AND RHODE ISLAND, (1819) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0337 In this very early gazetteer, the authors compiled an exhaustive description of Connecticut and Rhode Island as of 1819, including the topography, history, and statistics of each county, town, city, burrough, and village in the State. Of special interest to genealogists, the authors include frequent biographies of the town founders, early settlers, ministers, and other prominent citizens. There is also much detail about the manufacturing, agricultural, fisheries, and other commercial interests in each town as well as a description of local governments, schools, churches, navigable waterways, and local native American tribes. Two fascinating early maps, one of each State, are also included in high resolution. P.J. Hannifan and Co., ROAD AND COUNTY MAP OF CONNECTICUT AND RHODE ISLAND AND GAZETTEER... AND BUSINESS DIRECTORY, (1898) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0338 The title of this book is misleading because, although it does contain a detailed color map of Connecticut and Rhode Island, the bulk of the book is designed as a business directory and advisor. It is fascinating in its own right, having been written "With Historical, Biographical, Political, Law, and Other Valuable Information Useful for the Office, Store, and Home." With the business owner principally in mind, it includes a dictionary of business terms and summary of laws relating to contracts, trademarks, naturalization, and suffrage, among others. It also includes examples of legal transactions, contracts, and list of weights and measures, legal holidays, and more. The book is full of interesting articles like how to calculate interest, measure corn in a crib, determine the weight of live cattle, measure crops per acre, detect counterfeit money, among other utilitarian advice for merchants, farmers, and business owners. Other articles which are revealing of 19th-century life include recipies for housekeepers (cleaning supplies, etc.), antidotes for poison, and rules of etiquette ("Allowing the dress to trail on the street is in exceedingly bad taste. Such a street costume simply calls forth and contempt from the more sensible people.") There are also summaries, lists, and statistics of world history, temperatures, populations, cities, bridges, mountains, distances, time zones, principal exports, inventions and improvements, world records for on air, land, and sea, and other "Facts Worth Knowing and Remembering." Historians will appreciate a detailed timeline and desciption of causes of the events of U.S. wars, biographies of the heroes of those wars, of signers of the Declaration of Independence, and of Presidents of the United States. For the sake of completeness, the book even includes copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. Of perhaps more interest to family researchers, the book is interspersed with thousands of advertisements of local (Connecticut and Rhode Island) businesses with the names of proprietors, business descriptions, and street addresses. Zadock Thompson, HISTORY OF VERMONT, NATURAL, CIVIL, AND STATISTICAL IN THREE PARTS, WITH A NEW MAP OF THE STATE, AND 200 ENGRAVINGS, (1842, 1853) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0344 This original 1842 publication includes a detailed description and physical geography of the State of Vermont as well as elaborate descriptions (and more than 200 original engravings) of its animals and plants, including their history, description, and general characteristics. Individual chapters describe the quadupeds, birds, reptiles, fishes, invertebrates, and botany of the State. In addition, however, this publication includes an "appendix" of 1853 which, with more than 300 pages, is larger than the original publication. In this section, the author elaborates on the natural history of the state and supplements it with a detailed description of its civil history, including sections dedicated to the Indian and Colonial Wars, the settlement and controversy with New York, the Revolutionary War, legislative proceedings, political institutions, education and literature, religious institutions, and native Indian inhabitants. The last section of the book is Thompson's Gazetteer of Vermont with "topographical and historical descriptions of all of the counties, towns, rivers, mountains, &c., alphabetically arranged." Of particular interest to researchers, it frequently includes short biographies of the town founders, early settlers, ministers, and other prominent citizens. === New downloadable products ==================== By popular demand, we continue our effort to make valuable data resources available as downloads so that you can save the cost of shipping. For the past several years I have been providing these services in response to special requests, and the success of those engagements has convinced me to expand my activities in this area. My goal is to help people solve data issues so they can focus on more rewarding activities like research and analysis or sharing and publicizing results. A typical project involves creating a small program that makes changes to TMG data or GEDCOM data given a set of rules defined by the customer where the goal is to make bulk changes without rote, manual steps that are time-consuming, error-prone, and boring. Other project examples include custom report development and custom Format development. The latter applies to Second Site users who want a specific presentation style for their web sites, but do not have the technology skills to customize Second Site at that level." Please contact John via e-mail (mailto:JCardinal@JohnCardinal.com) to discuss potential projects. === Report samples - correction ====================== The last issue of the this newsletter requested that users submit samples of their customized reports and offered a gift certificate reward for each such report that is selected and posted to our sample reports web site. Due to a typographical error, however, the email address to send such sample reports was misstated and any such emails were not received. If you submitted one or more report samples, please resend it to samples@whollygenes.com ("samples" is plural) and you will receive an email acknowledgement upon receipt. We apologize for the inconvenience. To recap the offer, if you are particularly proud of a report or wall chart that you have generated with The Master Genealogist or Family Tree SuperTools, then we'd like to post it on the Sample Reports web site (http://www.whollygenes.com/samplereports.htm) so that other users can be inspired by your creation. We're interested in any non-default report output but especially any which employs a creative use of the report options or a combination of features to generate unique reports. To submit a report sample for inclusion on the site, please generate an Acrobat Reader (PDF) file (for reports) or JPG image (for charts) and send it to samples@whollygenes.com. Please include a brief description of the report options that you used. We'll be happy to credit you by name for your creation. If we use your report sample, you'll receive a $10 gift certificate that is good for any U.S. data CD from the Wholly Genes web store. The person who submits the most innovative or interesting report sample by 30 April 2007 will receive a $100 gift certificate that is good for any product on the Wholly Genes web store! === Cruise roommates wanted ======================= The 2007 Genealogy Conference and Cruise is 75% sold out. Powell, ed., HISTORIC TOWNS OF NEW ENGLAND, (1899) 2007 $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0345 Powell conceived the idea of a historical tour of old New England towns, with a lecture on each town by a local authority. This volume, the first in a series of such tours, collects those lectures for about a dozen early towns, including Plymouth, Boston, Hartford, New Haven, Newport and Deerfield. Powell was able to arrange for some of the leading historians and antiquarians of the late nineteenth century to prepare lectures for his tour group, scholars such as George Sheldon, Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Edward Everett Hale. As a result, this volume presents an excellent picture of the state of local historical research of a century ago. Rev. Elias Nason, M.A., A GAZETTEER OF THE STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS, (1874) 2007 $14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0248 The author, Rev. Elias Nason, M.A., has compiled "a clear and concise topographical description, together with a brief historical and statistical notice, of the several counties, cities, towns, and villages of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts." The book offers much more than that to a family historian, however. In addition to the typical physical description and history of each town, the author devotes much of his attention to the people of the area, including the native inhabitants and biographical sketches of the earliest white settlers and prominent citizens. Early businesses, churches, and schools are also described. A separate section of general history describes the State as a whole, including its bays, harbors, capes, islands, rivers, mountains, lakes, and ponds. A beautiful hand-colored map of the State is also included. George Wingate Chase, HISTORY OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS, FROM ITS FIRST SETTLEMENT IN 1640, TO THE YEAR 1860, (1861) 2007 $14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0259 The author covers the first two-hundred-and-twenty years of the history of the town of Haverhill, Massachusetts, using extensive extracts from the town, county and colony records. Along the way he includes biographical sketches of many of the early settlers, and closes with a genealogical section. Haverhill was established in 1640, at the end of the Great Migration, one of several settlements necessitated by the great increase in Massachusetts population at the end of a decade of heavy immigration. As with the neighboring town of Salisbury, many of the first settlers of Haverhill had earlier resided in Newbury and Ipswich. (continued) Hamilton Child, GAZETTEER OF ORANGE COUNTY, VERMONT, 1768-1888, (1888) 2007 $14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0238 This 19th-century "Gazetteer or Towns" in Orange County, Vermont devotes at least several pages to each town in the county, most of which is devoted to a detailed account of the first settlers, prominent early citizens, businesses, and churches. Within each section is a description of each village, hamlet, and post office. Of course, the descriptions in most cases also include the town's history, physical description, boundaries, population, and topography. (continued) Alonzo J. Fogg, THE STATISTICS AND GAZETTEER OF NEW-HAMPSHIRE; CONTAINING DESCRIPTIONS OF ALL OF THE COUNTIES, TOWNS AND VILLLAGES; ALSO BOUNDARIES AND AREA OF THE STATE AND ITS NATURAL RESOURCES, (1874) 2007 $14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0328 The bulk of this volume contains a detailed description of every city, town, and county within the State of New Hampshire, including a description of each with respect to its geographic position, population, and its "mountains, lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, its summer resorts, villages, and manufactories, resources, churches, public schools, libraries, hotels, railroads, &c." Of particular interest to genealogists, however, will be the author's focus on the history of the State, including details about the first settlers in each town, the first ministers, etc. (continued) Geo. J. Varney, GAZETTEER OF THE STATE OF MAINE; WITH NUMEROUS ILLUSTRATIONS, (1886) 2007 $14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0339 This early gazetteer of about 630 pages is principally an alphabetical description of "every town, plantation, mountain, lake, and bay" within the State of Maine along with its topography, boundaries, history, and statistics. In most cases, the author also details the original settlers, early churches and ministers, and other prominent citizens of each town. (continued) William Chapin, REFERENCE GAZETTEER OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA; CONTAINING A GENERAL VIEW OF THE UNITED STATES, AND OF EACH STATE AND TERRITORY, AND A NOTICE OF THE VARIOUS CANALS, RAILROADS, AND INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS, (1839) 2007 $14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0325 Chapin has captured an immense amount of data depicting the topographical organization of the United States at a critical point in its history, when the Industrial Revolution was transforming the countryside. There is information on physical features, political divisions and transportation networks. There are lengthy entries for each state, substantial accounts of the larger cities, and lesser accounts for smaller towns and villages, right down to the smallest of rural post offices. Population figures are included where available. Kegley, F.B., KEGLEY'S VIRGINIA FRONTIER: THE BEGINNING OF THE SOUTHWEST, THE ROANOKE OF COLONIAL DAYS, 1740-1783, (1938) 2007 $14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0308 Through the extensive use of contemporary documents, Kegley traces the westward course of migration into the interior of Virginia in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, providing much detail on the settlement and development of communities in theupper reaches of the James and Roanoke rivers. The author devotes just a few pages to the developments prior to 1740, reproducing letters and official documents relating to the exploration of the Virginia backcountry. The bulk of the book is devoted to the years from 1740 to 1783, with substantial sections on the land grants and settlements from 1740 to 1760, on the activities during the French and Indian War, on further developments from 1760 to 1770, and finally on the organization and early years of Botetourt County. As the chronological and topographical treatment proceeds, the author sets forth abstracts of thousands of land grants, organized by time period and by section of the watershed. These basic records are supplemented by militia lists, business records and many other documents. The text is supported by many maps drawn especially for this volume, some showing the distribution of settlements along the various watercourses, and others platting out groups of land grants at some of the early settlements. Many photographs of surviving early buildings are also included. ===== James Moore Brown, THE CAPTIVES OF ABB'S VALLEY, A LEGEND OF FRONTIER LIFE, (1854) 2007 $9.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0267 Unlike other areas Southwest Virginia and most of West Virginia continued to face the threat of Indian attacks from the end of the French and Indian War until General Wayne defeated the Indians in 1794. The Captives of Abb's Valley details the experiences of one family during this period. Written in 1854 by the son of one of the captives, the story of Mary Moore's early life, capture and later return provides the reader with details of early pioneer life as well as its dangers. Both Mary and her brother James and their companion in captivity Martha Evans survived and left numerous descendants who intermarried with the Brown, Crow, Hummer, Morrison and Taylor families, among others..Mary Moore's father, Captain James Moore, a second generation Scotch-Irish Presbyterian who married Mary Poage and whose siblings married into the Coalter, Harrison, McPheeter, Paxton, Steele, Walker and Wallace families came from the New Providence Church area of Augusta County. The story spans the period from their settlement in 1771/2 in Abbs Valley, a long narrow valley, pressing against the ridge of mountains that divides Virginia and West Virginia in present day Tazewell County to the death of Mary Moore in Rockbridge County in 1824. Written in the style of the period with a strong focus on the merits of religious faith, the story also details the everyday life of the participants and provides a picture of what life was like for other families on the frontier. The detailed descriptions of clothing, the raising of livestock, the scarcity of cutlery, the booty collected by the Indians and their treatment of their captives are drawn from the experiences of the individuals involved many of whom the author knew personally. === New Canadian data CDs ========================== The following new searchable data CDs have been released from our sister company, Archive CD Books Canada, and are now available at www.WhollyGenes.com. NEW BRUNSWICK IN THE 1940'S $15.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=CA0078 On this CD we are giving you complete copies of two useful books from the 1940's. The first is the Telephone directory for Western New Brunswick for July 1947, one of the few available resources for finding people living in the area between one and two generations ago. The other is "An Historical Guide to New Brunswick" and was published as an incentive to tourist travel in 1942. This guide was provided by the New Brunswick Government Bureau of Information and Tourist Travel, in 1942, for the potential tourist so he would know where to go and what to look for when he got there. Liberally illustrated with maps, and photographs of the spots of interest, today it provides us with a, not too strenuous, history of New Brunswick, indexed by the places where the events which shaped the province took place. CANADA - APRIL THROUGH AUGUST, 1916 $19.49 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=CA0202 This is a magazine style news publication which styles itself as "An illustrated weekly journal for all interested in the Dominion." As you might expect it contains articles about the events in the news both at a national and at a provincial level, including, for instance, the "Investment Supplement." From a purely genealogical perspective perhaps the most interesting portions of each issue are the lists of casualties and commissions. Of course the predominance of the reporting concerns "Officers" but most of the issues also devote space to "NCO's and Men." Each issue also contains a section reporting births, marriages and deaths in Canada, and a "Purely Personal" section which is packed with snippets reporting the events in the lives of Canadians, both enlisted and civilian. NOVA SCOTIA'S PART IN THE GREAT WAR - 1920, BY M. S. HUNT, (1920) 2007 $19.49 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=CA0204 Published two years after the end of the Great War, in 1920, this book was intended to record all the activities of Nova Scotians in support of the allies victory. While the Compiler and editor's name, Capt. M. S. Hunt appears in the by-line, this book was in fact the joint work of many individuals, their names being credited in the Preface as well as being printed in their individual contributions. Interesting differences between this book of "honour" and other similar works published as records of the same war is that this one not only commemorates the actions and individuals of the military organizations but also those of the auxiliary and civilian efforts. The records of nursing staff, both those who went to Europe and those who served here in Canada, are particularly valuable because of their relative scarcity. While it was recognized by the editor that the aim to report every war effort contribution would never be possible, this book does make a splendid effort. John Hawkes, HISTORY OF SASKATCHEWAN AND ITS PEOPLE - COMPLETE IN 3 VOLUMES, (1924) 2007 $29.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...&p=CA0222-C Written by John Hawkes and first published in 1924, this work of over 2000 pages was originally bound as three volumes, but organized into two subject areas. The whole of vol. 1 and a good part of vol. 2 contains the “story” of Saskatchewan while the remainder of vol. 2 and the whole of vol. 3 is packed with the biographies of about 660 prominent Saskatchewans, and more than 50 photographic portraits. The “story” section is also illustrated with over 235 photographs of subjects such as early dwellings and settlements, people, natural history, and many fascinating early photographs of native people and their ceremonies. Here you can find the whole story of Saskatchewan. The early story of this province is inescapably intertwined with that of the other administration districts initially named the North-West Territories. This vast tract included all the lands between the Ontario border and the Province of British Columbia and up to the pole (except Alaska). Sir Andrew MacPhail, HISTORY OF THE CANADIAN FORCES, 1914-19, MEDICAL SERVICES, (1925) 2007 $23.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=CA0224 By Sir Andrew MacPhail, Kt., O.B.E., M.D., C.M., LL.D., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., F.R.C.S., professor of the History of medicine, McGill University. First published 1925. While standing alone in its own right as a revealing history of this specialized and fascinating aspect of the Great War conflict, this book was also written to become a component of the comprehensive “History of the Canadian Forces in the Great War” being written and produced under the direction and supervision of Col. A. Fortescue Duguid in his position as the Director of the Historical Section, General Staff. The author includes plenty of statistical analysis of the medical consequences of sending over 400,000 Canadians to fight a war in Europe as well as records of the key staff running hospitals and other important medical services. Also not forgotten are the men and women who actually brought medicine to the battlefield. Sir Andrew provides a full listing of all the awards received and of all those who gave their lives in the medical service. Rev. D. J. Rankin, A HISTORY OF THE COUNTY OF ANTIGONISH, NOVA SCOTIA, 1929 $29.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=CA0237 In the spirit of "Truth in Advertising," a better title might have been "A History of the People of Antigonish." Fully two thirds of this very rare book are devoted to biographical descriptions of the early and well know families of this ancient Nova Scotia region. Not to say that the historical content is trivial. The Rev. D. J. Rankin, the author of record, credits J. W. MacDonald, esq., M.D., Mr. William Cameron (teacher,) and Rev. Ronald MacGillivray with providing virtually all of the historical content which would seem to mean that this content is the product of well respected, specialist, scholars and so far more valuable than the results of one man's gleanings. The Rev. Rankin also provides a bibliography of (and numerous credits to) the sources of the copious genealogical information in this book. The biographies are arranged by family groups and indexed by the root family name. Geoffrey Gilbert, THE GILBERT FAMILY HISTORY COLLECTION - COMPLETE IN 8 VOLUMES $29.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...&p=CA0238-S This is a family history "compiled and edited" by Geoffrey Gilbert, and privately published by him in the 1950's. Mr. Gilbert adopted a somewhat unusual format for organizing his history by combining elements of both the "Ancestors" and "Descendants" methodologies and then focusing the histories on his Great Great Grandparents, identifying both their ancestors and their descendants. By selecting this particular generation as his focus he allows himself to concentrate his history on the family's story within North America specifically ignoring the histories of those in Britain where most of the families previously originated from. Each volume also contains an Ancestors chart, some extremely detailed, while some contain sketch maps to help with the family settlement locations. === Did You Know? ================================ DID YOU KNOW that you can quickly access a list of unique surnames in your project using the Project Explorer? Just open the Project Explorer (from the Window menu or toolbar button) and change the "Sort" option to "Surname collapsed list." If you then click on the plus sign to the left of a surname, you'll see a list of people with that surname. (There's also a sort option for "Given name collapsed list.") DID YOU KNOW that you can have the Picklist or Project Exporer group surnames by soundex code so that they ignore minor spelling variations? Just change the Sort option to "Surname soundex." Product descriptions are by Robert Charles Anderson, FASG, for Archive CD Books USA. Sidney Perley, THE HISTORY OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS, (1924, 1926, 1928) 2007. $24.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0207 Perley has compiled an extremely detailed account of the first ninety years of the history of Salem, Massachusetts, incorporating the contents of many original documents. Perley takes note of when each resident first arrived in town, and at that point inserts a genealogical summary of the family. Salem was settled in 1626 by fishermen from the West Country of England. These residents were joined in 1628 by the advance party of the Massachusetts Bay Company, under the leadership of John Endicott. Although the political center of Massachusetts Bay moved to Boston with the arrival of John Winthrop in 1630, Salem continued to be an important part of Massachusetts history, as a major fishing port and as county seat of Essex County. The third volume includes a lengthy chapter on the Witchcraft Delusion of 1692, with transcripts of a selection of the court documents. In the course of narrating the history of Salem chronologically, Perley paid special attention to the first appearance of each inhabitant in the records. When possible, he included a facsimile of that person's signature. He then appended as a footnote a genealogical account of that person's descendants, frequently extending for many generations and covering several pages. Many original records, including especially land records, are transcribed or abstracted, with an exact citation to the location of each record. An appendix in the first volume provides a complete transcript of the two earliest surviving town-wide land grants, one of which provides the number of persons in each household as of 25 December 1637. ======= David E. Johnston, A HISTORY OF MIDDLE NEW RIVER SETTLEMENTS AND CONTIGUOUS TERRITORY, (1906) 2007. $19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0270 Johnston traces the exploration and settlement of the New River in southwestern Virginia, with emphasis on the area that was set off in 1837 as Mercer County, and is now in southern West Virginia. Several appendices list various county officials and present biographical sketches of early families. The author attempts to identify the earliest settlers at various stages of the settlement along the New River. As the population density increased, and as more and more counties were erected in this frontier area, Johnston tells of the creation of each new county, and lists the original officers in each. Mercer County was set off in 1837 from Giles County and Tazewell County, Virginia. At the same time, he narrates the clashes with the Indians as settlement progressed, and also gave accounts of local activities in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. Nearly a third of the narrative section of the book treats the Civil War in Mercer County and vicinity. The appendices, which comprise nearly a third of the volume, include lists of county officials, lawyers and other prominent citizens, lists of Civil War soldiers from the area, and multigenerational biographical accounts of many of the families that settled early along the Middle New River. ======= Rev. A.B. Cristy, ed., CLEVELAND CONGREGATIONALISTS 1895: HISTORICAL SKETCHES OF OUR TWENTY-FIVE CHURCHES AND MISSIONS, (1896) 2007. $14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0272 Cristy has collected articles on the history and organization of Congregationalism in Cleveland in the nineteenth century, followed by accounts of each of the twenty-five congregations existing in Cleveland and vicinity. The section on each congregation concludes with a complete list of members. The section on each of the twenty-five churches or missions begins with a brief history of its organization, usually with a list of the founding members. Next comes a discussion of the various committees and clubs within each church, with a listing of all officers. When available, there is a photograph of the presiding minister and of the church building itself. Each of the twenty-five accounts concludes with a complete listing of all the members, as of 1 January 1896. These lists are not just of the head of household, or of the husband and wife. Entire households are included, along with the residential address. As a consequence, these listings constitute a complete census as of 1895 of the Congregational portion of Cleveland's population. Although the Congregational Church was an outgrowth of New England culture, not all of the churches served only that part of the population that had New England roots. There were Welsh, Polish and Bohemian congregations as well. ======= UNITED METHODIST HISTORICAL SOCIETY CLOSED CHURCH RECORDS SERIES, VOLUME 1 AND 2, EAST BALTIMORE STATION METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 1801-1908., (1801-1908) 2007. $34.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0452 The first two volumes of the United Methodist Historical Society Closed Church Records Series contains six church registers from the East Baltimore Station Methodist Episcopal Church (formerly Fells Point) spanning the years 1801-1908. These records are presented in their original sequence using high-resolution greyscale images. They include handwritten records and therefore do not include any facility for an automated search. Pre-printed section headings and every page containing historical records are included. Unused ledger pages are typically not included and account for any appearance of missing page numbers. The records include: Volume 1 Separate Registers - Marriages 1801-1835 - Marriages 1837-1872 - Baptisms 1838-1872 Register 1873-1885: - Members as of 1883-1885 - Marriages 1873-1885 - Baptisms 1873-1886 Volume 2 Register 1886-1895 - Members 1890-1895 - Marriages 1886-1894 - Baptisms 1885-1895 Register 1895-1908 - Members 1897-1908 - Marriages 1897-1907 - Baptisms 1895-1908 These two volumes are also available separately. These records were digitized and made available by Archive CD Books USA in cooperation with the United Methodist Historical Society. Additional volumes in the United Methodist Historical Society Closed Church Record Series will be available as they are completed. The Society maintains these original registers and a wide selection of other Methodist Church records and memorabilia at the Lovely Lane Museum and Archives in Baltimore, Maryland.
