  1. Microsoft Money

    Adobe Photoshop CS2

    Blender

Also, Microsoft has announced that they are open sourcing the .Net Core libraries

Perhaps I should have used the phrase 'On Occasion' instead of traditionally but this practice is more common with smaller companies.

  2. I believe that the major problem in moving to a more powerful database engine like one of those suggested is the IMPACT ON THE COST of the genealogical application. Unless Wholly Genes can use a FSF open-source database like Sqlite, it is probable that the individual licence cost would double or triple - making TMG non-competitive in the lower end marketplace. BTW: Sqlite is used in many common free applications like Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox. UNICODE support is extremely important, but escaping from the obsolete VFP is even more important. That escape should automatically provide UNICODE support..

MS SQL Server Express is free so I don't see that replacing the database as a licensing cost issue.

I've been in the IT field for a bit over 20 years and have worked at several companies with aging products. The internal mentally is usually something like 'we use platform X because this is what we know, our product might not be as good if we switch over to Y'

Wholly Genes has a GREAT product but the lack of Unicode support is going to hurt TMG more and more, as long as they keep quiet about their roadmap. It's only been pretty recent that Unicode has become an issue for me but there could be a time in the near future where Unicode support is the straw that breaks the camel's back.

  3. While I'm creating a wish list, I guess it would also be nice if things were moved to an OS independent platform (Linux and MacOS compatibility would be nice) but I don't see any of that happening soon / ever...

I develop software primarily for Windows but have been venturing into iOS development which requires me to use a Mac. Not wanting to lug around two computers I've been using a Macbook Pro as my primary machine for a little over a month with Parallels running so I have access to my Windows development tools. TMG runs flawlessly on Parallels but I understand it doesn't really solve the Linux issues.

Slightly off-topic here but I've been noticing that most of the software I've been running on Windows that I've found OSX ports of, it seems that the application is less functional than the Windows counterpart. Functionality has been removed to maintain that 'pretty' look that a lot of Mac applications have. I'm not saying the Wholly Genes would do that but TMG is great specifically BECAUSE it has so much additional functionality that is lacking in many other genealogy packages.

  4. Until last year I had a real Tablet PC that ran TMG fine and this was great for visiting relatives and scouring through church records. But, you are talking about an iPad which isn't a tablet PC. I have an iPhone and use GedView which seems pretty good for a reference tool. Apparently you can edit and upload changes but I haven't been brave enough to try it. The only drawback is that you have to export your database to GEDCOM and copy it over to your iPad.

  5. I don't think moving away from Foxpro has been said by WhollyGenes. I remember only that they accepted Unicode as a problem and put it on their Todo-list. But unfortunately, I never have seen a date.

I'm pretty sure that I heard that V7 would be the last version to run on the Foxpro platform and this was BEFORE V7 even came out. Seems that what I remember was either not official or not feasible.

  6. Let's hope not! Unfortunately, if WG have any plans of moving away from the FoxPro platform with v9 I fear that they may need at least that amount of time... so you might be right.

I'm not sure where I read it, or how long ago but I thought that TMG was moving away from FoxPro with V8. The odds are pretty good that I will still upgrade to V8 as I've been using TMG for over 10 years but Microsoft has announced that support for FoxPro will end in 2015.
