Upon reflection I may have misinterpreted your original post Jim:
however I am still left wondering: would I move all non-place type values out of PLACE fields into the memo field? Or some other destination.

Cool - thanks Jim. I will try out that utility!

FTM stores two different types of data in the same field (place and comment). After import, you need to clean up each of those tags and move the data to the correct field.Thanks Jim.
But did you mean MEMO field? I don't see a comment field in the tag entry window.

In my FTM-imported data, I have an individual with a SSN entry (I've renamed the field to SIN for Canada), and other tags like baptism, etc.
When I double click on the SSN (SIN) tag, I see the Place Style (US Standard) fields, and the SSN (SIN) value shows in the Country field.
Ditto for other tags like Religion or Nationality.
In yet other tags (baptism) I see the data split between a couple of Place Style fields (e.g. state and country).
In another case (medical info) I see the data entered into the memo field.
Why is this? Is this right or some artifact of a bad import process. Or do all tags work like this (which seems odd)?
In the SSN case, when I try to enter data in another field (like Postal), then both the Country value and the Postal value show as the tag value (in a comma-separated list).
Does anyone have an explanation of how these tags should work in terms of what field the data should normally reside in and why they currently use the fields of a place style even for data that is not place-type data?

I've added a new place style to supplement the default US standard place style default.
Now I'd like to globally change all address tags in the db to use this new place style I've created.
Is this possible to do in one operation?
Thanks,
strathglass.

Was trying to implement Terry's RELATED-BY flag as per http://tmg.reigelridge.com/related-by.htm.
However step 4 doesn't find anything, and so that is an obvious problem!
Does anyone who has created & used this flag have ideas on what the problem could be?
(I've reset all the flags back to "?" and tried again a few times with the same results.)
BTW: the tutorial has an error in step 2, in the 3rd last bullet of this step: at end it has the quoted text "Additions" that should say "Ancestors".
("Additions" is the name given to a filter that is created: not sure why Terry even has us name the filter since it is called up again only one other time [step 1 second last bullet] and not any of the subsequent times that the List...of People report is called up. Is that a mistake?)

Bingo! That did it Terry. Odd that the default behaviour doesn't make these windows all linked.
Anyways, I'll have to go check out your tutorials/articles/book - thanks!

Hi: I am a new user, still playing with the trial.
When I open the Project Explorer window, the help screen says "When you highlight any name in the Project Explorer, it changes the focus person on the other windows." Problem is - it doesn't!
Whether I single- or double-click a name in the Project Explorer, the focus person in the Details window does NOT change (the other two windows, for Siblings and Children.
Is this a known bug in 7.0?

This was the kind of info I was looking for, thanks.
Maybe others have their own scheme? (Looking for more input! )
One specific thought I had that is a variation on your scheme is to also include after the source type an indication of the relevant family name(s) mentioned.
Although in some cases (CENSUS 1900 U.S.) that makes sense only if the master source list is talking about some specific page of census data (since in general the census covers millions of names!)
So you'd have:
<SOURCE TYPE>-<SUBJECT SURNAME>-<DESCRIPTION>
E.G.
MARRIAGE RECORD-SMITH+JONES-John Smith+Mary Jones 1869 marriage certificate
DEATH RECORD-SMITH-John Smith 1949 statement of death
PHOTO(ANNOTATED)-MACDONALD-1942 photo of Jim MacDonald and immediate family and some aunts+uncles
TOMBSTONE-SMITH+JONES-John Smith+Mary Smith nee Jones tombstone photo taken 1989 (Our Lady of Grace Catholic Cemetery, Anytown, YourCountry)
I think the key is a good list of <SOURCE TYPE> entries that you could standardize on.
Here are my ideas, which include your input above:
SOURCE LIST TYPES:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BIBLE
PHOTO(ANNOTATED) (old family photos with notes on back, bottom, etc)
BIRTH RECORD
BAPTISM RECORD
MARRIAGE RECORD
DEATH RECORD
LAND RECORD
OTHER RECORD
OBITUARY
NEWSPAPER (non-obit. info, including captioned photos)
TOMBSTONE
BOOK
CENSUS
RECOLLECTION(PERSON) (recollections of PERSON about anything relevant)
OTHER
That is probably good enough, but I am sure someone with more experience could suggest changes for the better!
Hi: I am a new user (still on trial version, coming from FTM2005).
I've always tried to add source details when documenting genealogical facts.
But after importing into TMG7 and looking at my master source list, I realize it looks rather haphazard.
I thought if I applied a naming scheme to the master sources that this would help (make it easier to find items, for example).
Does anyone else have a naming scheme they apply to their sources that they could share?
BTW - I also see TMG has a master repository list: anyone want to advise on how important (or not) that this is?
Most of my source info to date is just personal recollection of family members, copies of relevant personal documents (obituaries, death certificates, marriage records, etc.), and photos of gravestones.
Thanks,
strathglass
Wow - lot more detail than I expected, thanks!
To answer Joan's question: I wanted Mac compatability. If it will run under Parallels, then great - since that satisfies my needs!
PS: I've downloaded the trail and will run it through its paces.
More good input. Thanks all!
Thanks all for the helpful feedback (especially efcharvet).
Keep it coming if anyone has anything else to add.
(Like: when will a 7.x point release come out?)
Yes, TMG support GEDCOM output, so it's data can be exported to TNG. The problem is, GEDCOM doesn't support TMG's most valuable features, like Witnesses, Roles, multi-party tags beyond a few family tags, customized sentences and source notes, etc.So, either you restrict your use of TMG to those features supported by GEDCOM, or you find another web publishing tool. The good news is that Second Site, a TMG companion program, reads the TMG data files directly and supports all these TMG features. It's extreamly flexible - see for example the sites listed at Keith Winters' Galary of Websites created with Second Site.
Thanks Terry. I did check out some of those examples. It looks like it has some potential, but I did like the look of the other product better.
I just saw a spiffy web publishing tool called The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding.
It is cheap and I like the looks of it.
Anyone here use TMG exports to feed TNG Sitebuilding? (It only requires GEDCOM input, so I suspect there would be no problem.)
And maybe TMG has its own web publishing capabilities: anyone want to comment on them?
I have FTM 2005 (and had several earlier versions). I just started looking at reviews to see if there was anything better.
I haven't found a lot of informative reviews to be honest.
But some I did find suggested TMG was pretty good.
My question to actual users of TMG who have also used other programs like FTM:
How does TMG compare? Is it really better?
(I've heard that the db [database] is more sophisticated, not so hap-hazard as the one in FTM.)
(I've also heard its quite fully featured compared to the competition. And that it has a bit of a steeper learning curve [which doesn't bother me at all, FYI].)
Speaking about the db though, I see from another thread that it looks like TMG7 is using Foxpro.
Isn't that kind of a dated solution? (Since Micro$oft is no longer supporting Foxpro.)
That would also limit you know to XP/Vista since Foxpro doesn't even run on other platforms now.
Just trying to get a feel for how well designed and put together this s/w is.
Ideally it will be very robust and portable! (Unfortunately I see the program only runs on Microsoft OSs.)
And finally how stable is this new TMG7 release? I see a lot of threads here that imply maybe it has a few more bugs than I'd like.
But then maybe it is still very usable and the problems are rare and not serious? I'd like some feedback on this too if possible.
Regards,
strathglass
PS: I plan to give the 30 day trial a spin, so that will help me form some opinions of my own.
Why does SSN tag appear in COUNTRY field?
