As with many Windows programs many program errors are not caused by the program. I deal with huge amounts of data. Some erros are easily fixed by running defrag, or rebooting to clear memory. Others are caused by users exceeding program capabilities. This program The Master Geneologist v 7.0 is a resource hog and extremely cumbersome handling huge files. It has tremendous capabilities, but it also has many unpublished limitations and quirks. I am not impressed by the forums or technical support. There are many posts that have no answer or a totally insufficient answer. If nothing else a reply of forward to developers should be a reply to posters asking questions, having problems, or just confused that forum supportters, users, or moderators cannot answer.

I purchased TMG 7 because it is supposed to be one of the best programs for keeping data on family research. To date I have had nothing but problems. Yesterday I succesfully imported 416, 326 names after 3 days of tieing up my computer. The next step was to check for duplicates. After several hours, I did get a list of merge candidates of 515, 231. I started checking and merging. I could not review the peole in TMG. I had to go to my legacy program, split view to compare candidates. Those that I wanted to merge I did. After several hundred evaluations, I decided to close the merge and quit for the night. I could find no way to save the candidates, or the merge or my place in the merge. Did I miss something or do I have to check for duplicates each time I want to merge people. If that is the case this is unacceptable.

Hello Terry: I tried to follow your tips. You instructions were not clear. I eventually figured out to go to the file menu under dataset manager to follow your process for merging two large datasets. After several hours I recieved the following Foxpro error and TMG crashed. I had to reset the computer to continue the process and try separating the datasets into 2 separate files. I have used several databases and geneology programs, incuding DB III, DBIV, Access, FoxPro, DB II, Paradox, Family Tree Maker, and Legacy. It took me nearly an hour just to understand the process you said to take. I was extremely distressed at your assumption that anyone could follow your process even when you left steps out. I have had so many problems with importing people I am getting frustrated. I tried to import 2 generations into TMG 7.0 gold. The first went in, no errors 25 people. No duplicates found. Next I imported 19 people for the next generation. Imported no errors. It did find a duplicate. There should have been 4. The numbers show2:... and 3:... for numbers. I tried to renumber to get 1 set of numbers and I cannot get rid of the 2: and 3:. I cannot merge the people I know are duplicates because the merge button is grayed out. HELP!!!!

I imported a Legacy file into TMG 7.0 gold. It seemed to handle the data correctly. I tried to run a report Ahnentafel - Direct Line for 250 generations from myself. It would not work correctly for more than 50 generations even though it says it shoud. My focus group of 6998 people show all the people in my direct line but the Ahnentafel - Direct Line will not accurately work for more than 50 generations. Why?? Is the program wrong in stating that it can do 250 generations has anyone else ever tried more than 100 generations??

I imported my file from legacy with no reported erros of 207895 people. I then tried to run search for duplicates and the program locked up after 2% of searching for duplicates. The import took about 48 hours. What is the problem?

I downloaded a 30 day trial version of TMG 7.0. I liked many of it's features. However, I did not purchase within 30 days. The trial expired. I purchased the gold version and attempted to activate it. There were many errors. I erased TMG 7.0 redownloaded it and activated it and those errors went away.
