Descendant box chart - no descendants
Virginia Blakelock replied to rbh5's topic in Visual Chartform and Chartform Delivery
Are all the relationships marked Primary? In the Details view those tags will be displayed with asterisks or in bold type, depending on your preferences setting. You said you have both 'No Threshold' and 'Include blank surety' ticked in the Surety settings on the Other tab of the descendent chart report options? Are the children by various wives? There are several threads in the VCF forum on large wall charts, including suggestions for compacting large wall charts and for saving them in PDF format for printing. Virginia -
Showing more than one line of a tag
Virginia Blakelock replied to Elizabeth's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
I agree, Robert - both 'Item' and Tips' are misleading - and it has always been a source of confusion. What would you have looked for in Help? 'Expand memo' - 'Show memo' - Show more' ?? Note also that the title of this thread 'Show more than one line of a tag' could be confusing. On the rightclick menu in the Details view are options to 'Display more rows per tag' and 'Display fewer rows per tag' - and, if you check that out, it is quite different from the 'Item tips' option. Reference Field not showing up as I want
Virginia Blakelock replied to RadioHead33's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Thanks. Got it. Preferences / Program Options / General / Format of ID - click on down arrow at right end of field and select 'Both'. That will get you both the ID and the Reference Field. Virginia -
Reference Field not showing up as I want
Virginia Blakelock replied to RadioHead33's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Rightclick in the Reference box and on that rightclick menu, click on 'Customize Other Info box'. Tick 'Reference' to appear in the Other Info Box if it is not already there. Then highlight 'Reference' and use the up/down arrows to move it to the top of the list and on the same line as Name - like this: Assuming that is what you have in mind (?). Virginia -
Hello - I moved your message to the TMG v8 section where you will receive more replies. Re locked datasets, from Help: "Locked data sets can be viewed, but not changed. This allows you to view data you have received from other researchers without changing the data. To make any changes in a data set, you must first unlock it. Once a data set has been unlocked, it cannot be locked again. Therefore, it cannot be refreshed from the original data set (applies to imported data sets)." Assuming this is your own project which you will be editing, you will want to Unlock it. As you start working in TMG, you may also want to customize your workspace. There are guidelines here for customizing your layout (workspace) - and many user examples here. Let us know if you have any more questions - and welcome to TMG. Virginia

Prune - Trim and an exhibits question
Virginia Blakelock replied to BruceB's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Bruce wrote: Bruce - A common problem when selecting people in the Focus Group is not first highlighting the people for whom you wish to add ancestors, descendents, spouses. See the forum message here for an example. Whether you split your large file is a personal decision - and may be influenced by how much intermarrying there has been within your family lines. I am more comfortable working with 4 separate projects (my husband's parents and mine). You can try the split on a copy of your project and see if you prefer it. Virginia -
Suddenly Lost PDF printer
Virginia Blakelock replied to mburnell's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Dede - Does that same report work if sent to Screen Preview? Has anything changed on your computer - installed new software or updates? Virginia -
Suddenly Lost PDF printer
Virginia Blakelock replied to mburnell's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Do you get an error message when it 'hangs'? Does this happen with all reports? Virginia -
Bart - That is good news. Thanks for letting us know you solved that problem. Virginia

Focus Groups missing spouses
Virginia Blakelock replied to Diane Hosler's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Diane - You may have run into a common error when setting up a Focus Group. Note that any selection you make in the Focus Group - like Add Spouses - will only affect people in the focus group who are selected/highlighted at the time. So, before clicking on Add Spouses, use 'Select All' to highlight everyone - if it is your wish to add spouses to everyone. There is a video here that shows the sequence. 1 - I added Frank Alexander. He is highlighted( yellow). 2 - He is still highlighted. I added his descendents. 3 - I wanted all the spouses. I highlighted the entire group and added the spouses. If that is not the problem, let us know. Virginia -
BaG - If you are opening a project directly, try using the Welcome Window: Preferences / Startup and Exit / During startup: Show Welcome Window The pjc error seems to be less frequent when using that option. Virginia

Can you please provide a way to make the tag entry screens bigger?
Virginia Blakelock replied to Kim & Kelly Derrick's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Have you tried adjusting the text size globally using the Windows Screen Resolution? Rightclick on the Windows screen and select Screen Resolution. There is an option on that screen to 'Make text and other items larger or smaller. The choices are smaller, medium, and larger. There is also an option on the left side to 'Set custom text size (DPI)'. That gives you a sliding scale, so you can try something like 115%, for example. Virginia -
Getting rid of red filter on person screen
Virginia Blakelock replied to Kay Ingalls's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Kay - You can see it more clearly in the video here. In the upper left of the Details view is the word Filtered. I right-clicked on the first name - Delilah Woods - in the Details view (you can rightclick anywhere in the Details view). This opened up the right-click menu where the Filter options are listed. I un-checked the filter that was selected. That got rid of the Filtered. If you aren't familiar with that rightclick menu, you may want to explore some of the options - like adding different columns to the Details view. Many screens in TMG have rightclick menus, so it is something to look for. Were you able to restore your toolbars and icons? Virginia -
Getting rid of red filter on person screen
Virginia Blakelock replied to Kay Ingalls's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Kay - For the red filter - rightclick in the Details view and on that rightclick menu, go to 'Filter for' and deselect any filters that are ticked. To restore your toolbars and icons, click on View / Toolbars on the top menu and select the toolbars (which include the icons) that you wish to include in your layout. Once you have restored the toolbars that you like, go to the top menu View / Layouts and save your layout with a new name, so you can always go back to that layout. Virginia -
TMG v8.08 closes without backing up
Virginia Blakelock replied to afinab's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Afina - An alternative to the Backup on Exit is a Backup button on your Custom Toolbar. It runs much faster than the Backup on Exit - and is handy to backup during a work session if you have entered a lot of data - instead of waiting to backup until you shut down. I have that button at the beginning of the toolbar - but it would be even more practical perhaps to put it at the right end, near the X Close button so you don't forget it. There is a video here showing how fast it runs with all the options selected. There is more information on customizing TMG layouts and toolbars here. Virginia -
TMG v8.08 layout on Windows 8.1 laptop
Virginia Blakelock posted a topic in The Master Genealogist v8
I've posted a screenshot here (in the New Favorite Layout thread) of a v8.08 layout on a Win8 machine. I could not get the Easy Search toolbar to dock to the side - and would be interested to hear if anyone else has that problem. Virginia -
My New Favorite Layout: Customizing the Workspace in v8
Virginia Blakelock posted a topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Examples of customized v8 layouts: 1: Layout with tag type label accents. Preference settings include minimum and maximum font size v8 Tahoma; vertical lines, horizontal lines, empty row lines. Toolbar uses small buttons. Windows 7 Classic theme. 2. Two monitor layout. Drag the layout to the second monitor, position the TMG windows and save the layout with a new name. 3. Project accent based on surname flags (top ten names in Distribution of People report). Screenshots are of the Detail, Family and Tree views; the Project Explorer, and the Expanded Picklist. 4. A Custom Toolbar can save space in a layout and make frequently used tools quickly available. There are over 40 items on my toolbar, including tags for each census year, backup and maintenance options, links to other projects - and particularly handy when tweaking report or chart options: Run last Report.. The custom toolbar can be docked at the top, bottom or side or floating in the layout. There is a walk-through video of my custom toolbar here, and as docked in the layout below: For more examples of TMG layouts, see the legendary thread 'My New Favorite Layout' here. We've come a long way in TMG since Teresa started that discussion six years ago - but there are still some interesting and creative ideas to be found in that popular and long-running thread. See Terry's article here for tips on customizing the workspace, including setting the v8 tag type label colors. Virginia -
My New Favorite Layout: Customizing the Workspace in v8
Virginia Blakelock replied to Virginia Blakelock's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Attached is a screenshot of my TMG v8.08 layout on a Win8.1 laptop. My custom toolbar is at the top - and the Easy Search toolbar - which I had trouble docking to the side in Win8.1 - at the bottom. Virginia -

Joe - Thanks for the update. It was a strange problem - appearing only in VCF. I'm glad you were able to figure it out - Virginia -

Example of one of the three images - all TIFF files, all showing the same effect - appearing incorrectly only in VCF charts - not in other reports in TMG. Virginia -

Joe - Sorry about the confusion. Maybe the moderator window is different. I see a screen like the image in the link below (I added a red arrow to point out the Attach Files info): .http://www.screencast.com/t/E7URkzzrzr If you don't have that screen, send me a copy of the file. Click on my 'picture' icon to get the address. Virginia -

Virginia Blakelock replied to Joe Cummings's topic in Visual Chartform and Chartform Delivery
Joe - There is an option to attach an image to a reply. I do not know if that option is restricted. If so, let me know and you can send me the image and I will post it. Here is how to do it: On the Reply screen, click the More Reply Options at the bottom right. Use the Browse button to select the file on your computer. Click Attach this File. Click Add to Post (at right end of bar below the message field. The image will be placed wherever your cursor is when you Add to Post. Virginia -
Images on chart missing portions
Virginia Blakelock replied to Joe Cummings's topic in Visual Chartform and Chartform Delivery
Joe - If it is a large chart with many images, any chance it is a memory problem with the chart? Are these images in the same generation? If so, you might try a small chart which includes those people and their images. You could also try inserting the images in the chart and see if that works. The Insert Image icon in VCF is the square yellow box with a mountain view. Virginia -
