If you are typing in the registration number, could there be an error in entering an O (oh) or 0 (zero)? The problem seems to be the registration, but have you checked the Data Set Manager to be sure the datasets are not locked? Virginia

Do you use custom name or place styles? If you add only givenname and surname - nothing else in the Add Person window (no citations, sureties, Birth info, etc.) - do you still get the error? Virginia

Preferences > Program Options > Other > Send URLs to the browser with backslashes. Check that box and see if it works then. Virginia

That was my experience also. In each reported case, the Welcome Window is unchecked in Preferences. The error message appears, the program is shut down, and next time opens normally - but with the Welcome Window. Virginia

As Paul said, you have to select the Language pack when you install the full version. The language pack is either 3 or 4 files in your main tmg folder,(strings.DBF, strings.FPT, strings.CDX, maybe also strings.upd). If you have them on your desktop, you could just copy those files to your laptop and put them in your main tmg folder. I would guess that your customizations are in one of those files, so you would not have to import them into your laptop (just a guess). You also might try it without the .cdx (index) files since they are indexed for the desktop. They would be refreshed when you start tmg on the laptop. You can also include the language translations in a backup (and restore on the laptop), but I don't know whether that assumes the strings files are already installed or not. Virginia

There is a caveat. If changing the name from mixed case to all Upper has the same effect as changing the flag name, then there might be a problem. Suggest it be tried with one flag only and make sure the flag values are still correct. Or try it with a dummy flag. And if the changes are made, be very careful that the uppercase name matches exactly the mixed case name. Or if it is supposed to work with mixed case, then might be better to wait for a fix. From Help: You may make changes in any field. Be aware, however, that if the flag name is changed, you will lose all of the values for this flag that you have previously set. You should experiment and be sure you are satisfied before setting the flag value for many individuals. You cannot delete flag values which are currently being used in flags. Wholly Genes, Inc. I do not know which preferences, just that resetting them has helped several people with isolated - not widespread - problems after an upgrade. I have used it several times without a problem. The validation process has certainly complicated it for you. Virginia

Oops, sorry, I misread your message as changing name tags (6.05 problem) - not as adding a name-change tag There is a problem with adding tags in 6.07 in Beginners mode, but that does not apply to name tags as far as I know. The full text of the first error message (not the backup error) might offer a clue. The error messages are stored in the file 'error.txt' in the main tmg folder if you'd like to post it here. I don't recall tmg doing a file validation after I reset the preferences, but maybe with my small projects it happened too quickly. I hope tmg works OK after all that. I guess you've tried all the Performance Recommendations (on the File menu, under Maintenance)? Virginia

Using the Sample project I was able to replicate the problem with a newly added custom flag (an older custom flag worked fine) when I used 'Print and Save.' If I used Save, the columns were properly saved, even after I closed and reopened TMG - but were lost again as soon as I used Print and Save. Were your custom flags added in v6.07? Virginia

Is the report to a word processor or to screen? Is the file destination correct if it is being sent to a file? Virginia

There was a problem changing tag types in v6.05, and it was fixed in v6.07. Are you using the latest version - 6.07? That backup error message occurs when the path to the backup is incorrect. Check File > Preferences > Current Project Options > Advanced. If you upgrade, be sure and check the backup path again to make sure it is correct. Virginia

Try resetting the Preferences using the Reset Defaults > Both button at the bottom of the File > Preferences screen. If you don't get the error messages any more, then you should be able to reset your preferences without any more problems. Virginia

I'm at a loss here, Cathy. Does a column header appear for the flag column? Do you have more than one dataset in your project? Have you tried a single custom flag? I can't think of anything wrong in the way your flags are defined, since they are showing up in the dropdown list in the column output. Do the custom flags show up in a List of People report? Try resetting the default configuration for the List of Events, using the Delete button. Then add your flags back in. Virginia

The Less view is a list of the source Abbreviations. Did you enter an Abbreviation for that Source before the source definition screen disappeared? In the More view, click on Edit for that source and see if there is an entry in the Abbreviation field. If you sort the Less view by Source#, does the source appear? Sometimes the vertical scroll bar on the Less window does not go all the way to the top or bottom, so drag that if necessary to doublecheck the source is not hidden. Virginia

Is this on your laptop? As I recall you had a problem earlier with no printer attached, but installing the PDF printer fixed it - since a printer driver is necessary to Print to Screen. You might check Properties and make sure a printer is selected. If it is the Windows default, select a specific printer. You can also try refreshing the report configuration, using the Delete button. Is that flag not included in the drop down list in the first field on the filter tab when you click on the yellow funnel filter icon? Virginia

If you mean that you have 400 place records where the short place field in Master Place List > Edit is blank, that is OK if you want City, County, State. That is the default Short place template and is determined by the Short place option in File > Preferences > Current Project Options > Other. In reports and charts which have the option for Short Place field, the default template will be used. The Short place field in Master Place List > Edit would be used if you wanted to override the default template for a specific place. Let me know if that does not answer your question - Virginia

My guess was that it had to do with a backup of customizations. Step 3 of the wizard includes toolbars - so maybe tmg was calling the TOOL BAR MANager? I'm happy to hear there was a simple solution. Virginia

There is no way to increase the number of generations/boxes visible in the tree view. As you've probably found, you can use the arrows on the right side to move to the next higher generation if there is one (at the same time losing a generation on the left). Virginia
